2013 LEGO sets: Legend of Chima pictures

We just talked about rumors of a new 2013 LEGO theme called Legend of Chima just the other day (see: 2013 LEGO Theme Mystery – What is This?), and now the first pictures surfaced. (Thanks Geneva and Jacob for the news!) According to LEGO fan-site ToysNBricks, someone listed a pre-production sample set from The Legend of Chima series on eBay. How the seller got it is anyone’s guess, but the listing gives us a first glimpse at this mysterious LEGO theme rumored to replace Ninjago. 🙄

This set is called #70113 LEGO Legend of Chima – Chi Battles, and consist of two mythical-looking creatures and interesting vehicles. There is also a ball and some kind of a spinner – indicating that this is going to be a set with a game-feature, similar to Ninjago.

This is the back of the packaging showing the Legend of Chima game-feature. Looks like the spinners are operated with a string, and supposed to make things flying. You can also make out some crystals, cards and weapons – again, showing a strong resemblance to Ninjago.

You can also make out another set in the series, the #70002 LEGO Legend of Chima (and I can’t figure out the name). This set also appears to have two minifigures, vehicles and spinners.

Also, please note the back of the Legend of Chima cards. Although a lot of people have been saying that the picture at the recently released LEGO Club Magazine is referring to an upcoming Polar theme (see: 2013 LEGO Theme Mystery – What is This?), you can see that the back of the Legend of Chima cards have the same emblem as in the magazine, and also the crystals. This seems to indicate that the question mark was in fact referring to Legend of Chima and not Polar X-Plorer.

Looks like the seller never sold the Legend of Chima set (probably because nobody was looking for it or knew what to make of it), so if you are interested it may be worth to contact them and see if they still have it.

So what do you think of what we can see so far about the LEGO Legend of Chima series? Do you think it is a worthy replacement of Ninjago? How do you like the characters? And what do you think of the game-feature? Share your thoughts and discuss in the comment section below! 😉

    AWESOME!!
Look like the spinners are being replaced with this.
    AND TIGERS ON THE BOX!
    I think it’ll be a great theme!

  • This might be good unuf to replace ninjago!

  • The Yellow Ninja September 12, 2012, 10:52 AM

this seems a bit like the beyblade toys

    • ultimate ninja dude January 1, 2013, 6:07 PM

i hate beyblade i got rid of it out of my school!!

  • Eric at A Lego a Day September 12, 2012, 10:53 AM

Looks like a progression of Ninjago. They look to be pull cord spinning tops that battle. Not my thing, but I can see kids liking these.

    • studless September 12, 2012, 12:31 PM

no, I think the pullcords power the bike-type things.
      This could be interesting. 😉

      • Dr. Inferno September 12, 2012, 12:57 PM

They don’t look like spinners to me…they seem to be kind of like a SSP made out of legos…..

  • 12dw1 September 12, 2012, 10:58 AM

i dont know about this because on one hand it looks quite good but ninjago was REALLY good and im not sure it will be as popular by far as it just looks like lego beyblade where as ninjago had tv series about it and so they made sets from that as well

  • 12dw1 September 12, 2012, 10:59 AM

by the way when is the next ninjago episode?

    • admin September 12, 2012, 11:51 AM

Should be early October. That’s the last I heard, but it is not yet confirmed. 🙄

  • Jacob September 12, 2012, 11:44 AM

Its still a little early to tell, but it looks like the rip cords cause the wheels on the motorcycles to move forward and a means of making it drive.

    • gid617 September 12, 2012, 11:48 AM

Yeah, and maybe you drve up a ramp and see who smashes the thing in front first?
The back also says three ways to play (or something like that), so it seems like this might have more dimentions than Ninjago.

      • studless September 12, 2012, 12:34 PM

me and my friends play 5-8 people in a match. last man standing wins, and cards affect everyone, not individuals.
        makes for an interesting game.

    • admin September 12, 2012, 11:55 AM

Jacob, I haven’t noticed that! Good eyes! 😀

    • samuel September 12, 2012, 4:21 PM

      agreed

  • gid617 September 12, 2012, 11:47 AM

Well, I prefer Ninjago (at least so far), but these are looking better and better. Interesting how close the box resembles the Ninjago Starter set packs. . . I think a lot of kids could mistake it pretty easily (at least it would grab their attention if they were fans of Ninjago). 😛 I’m not too much of a fan of Animal-people, but if the game is fun, I might like this. It does seem to have a lot more pieces than the Ninjago spinners.

  • Zubashi September 12, 2012, 11:48 AM

I wonder who won the bid….
I’ve seen another blurry pick somewhere and it looks like a lion monster truck thing.

    • admin September 12, 2012, 11:57 AM

Zubashi, nobody bought it. That is why I’m saying it would be worth to contact the seller. 🙄

    • yodaman5556 September 12, 2012, 4:19 PM

Yeah I saw that pic too. It was on the back of the Chi Battles box. Here it is:

  • gid617 September 12, 2012, 11:52 AM

BTW, it seems that there actually is no Polar theme (at least not for a while). Polar Xxpress might have been just a code name for Galaxy Squad. 🙁

  • Zubashi September 12, 2012, 11:52 AM

Maybe the Speedorz isn’t a new thing but the name of the bikes?

    • gid617 September 12, 2012, 11:53 AM

It actually seems to be the Chima equvilent for Ninjago’s Spinjitzu. Good guess!

  • gid617 September 12, 2012, 11:57 AM

Maybe the one player with the blue ball trys to knock down the contraption on top of the boulder and the player with the top-thing trys to land (or amybe just hit?) the top plate? Hmm. . . that seems to be a bit too easy for the blue ball.

  • Zubashi September 12, 2012, 12:00 PM

    Masters of Speedorz? lol xD

    • gid617 September 12, 2012, 12:01 PM

LOL! Under the number on the front of the box, it looks like it says “Chi Battles”. (Where does the Ma come in, I wonder?)

  • Zubashi September 12, 2012, 12:06 PM

I got my name from a ninja from the Stupid Mario Brother show on Youtube, where there is a Ninja ambush and Zubashi is the leader, the blood-red Ninja!

  • bently September 12, 2012, 12:26 PM

    great more ninjago.

  • Dude September 12, 2012, 2:28 PM

    Interesting?

  • Xi ninja September 12, 2012, 3:18 PM

    Hmm. . . Don’t know what to make of this. . .

  • ChrisThunder- Assembly Engineer September 12, 2012, 3:24 PM

    This looks like garbage.

    • The Green Ninja September 12, 2012, 5:17 PM

I know right. It looks horrible.

  • ntk743 September 12, 2012, 3:36 PM

The rumor is not true! Well, it may be… but nobody knows! And lets keep Ninjago popular so they can’t replace it! 😉

    • yodaman5556 September 12, 2012, 4:15 PM

Too late. You heard the news, LEGO has already replaced Ninjago with this new RUBBISH theme…

      • The Green Ninja September 12, 2012, 5:16 PM

WHAT RUBBISH THEME? Is the legend of chima?

      • ntk743 September 12, 2012, 6:04 PM

        No it’s not to late!

      • Jacob September 12, 2012, 6:04 PM

Whenever an new theme is unearthed, many LEGO fans are quick to whine and complain. I remember when I first found out about Ninjago, I though it was stupid. Why are there ancient Javanese warriors fighting against enemies with motor vehicles? I still don’t get why LEGO decided to go with that spin, and I still would have much rather have seen a more historically based feudal Japan. However, it certainly was very profitable for LEGO. All I’m saying is, it is WAY too early to say if this theme is good or not based solely on a few blurry, in packaging, images from just one product.

        • Jacob September 12, 2012, 6:05 PM

Although I would like to see how LEGO would make Javanese warriors, I did mean to say Japanese. Spell check got a little off there.

          • NRG PYTHOR September 12, 2012, 8:15 PM

I HATE THISSSS! Im NEVER going to buy this! Never! Ninjago is WAY better! This looks like something a 5yr old would like! Im soooooo mad! Skeletons, snakes, and stone guys are AWSOME! Wierd animal people is just…… i dont know! 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁 😥 😡

            • NRG PYTHOR September 12, 2012, 8:31 PM

They should stick with ninjago! Because i bet lego is going to make this last because it will be a “popular game” like ninjago. But, if it fails, they would just end it all probably! 😥 😡 🙁

              • Jacob September 12, 2012, 9:48 PM

Almost no “modern” LEGO playthemes last more than 3 years anyways (the obvious exceptions being City and Bionicle). This has been an interesting issue for LEGO. Hasbro many themes that have been around for two or more decades (Pound puppies, G.I.Joe, Transformers, My Little Pony, etc.) Personally, This was the first system playtheme that LEGO made that I felt could buck LEGO’s trend and move into a near permanent addition to the themes list. However, this does not appear to be the case due to recent news.

                • NRG PYTHOR September 12, 2012, 9:59 PM

Well, they could have made the “wierd animal people” at least look better 🙄 . BTW IF the sets are better than… the… spinny things, i *MIGHT* get *one* set… [it hurt saying that]

                  • NRG PYTHOR September 12, 2012, 10:02 PM

+ snakes r reptiles [I think there is adiference] 🙂

                    • Jacob September 12, 2012, 10:58 PM

Its fine if you don’t personally like this set. What I’m saying is that it is unreasonable to judge an enter theme by a few blurry images of an unopened preliminary set. Personally, I think I would like to use the wolf head for a werewolf, but I will need to see it in person before I stick with this claim. Also:
                      A classification of snakes
                      Kingdom: Animalia
                      Phylum: Chordata
                      Class: Reptilia
                      Order: Squamata
                      Superfamily: Varanoidea
                      Suborder: Serpentes

                    • NRG PYTHOR September 12, 2012, 11:20 PM

The main reason really why i hate chima is: it replaced Ninjago! P.S. Cool! Varanoidea 😆 🙄 😀

            • Jacob September 12, 2012, 9:41 PM

I though this comment was meant to be ironic. I was disappointed to find out you were serious. We have a few blurry images from ONE set that is still in its packaging. There is no way of knowing if this theme is better or worse than Ninjago at this point. Personally, I feel that many of the playthemes that LEGO has made were designed for an younger audience, because that is the target demographic. And seriously, you are complaining about the “weird animal people”. I’m pretty sure the snakes in Ninjago count as “weird animal people”

              • Micho September 13, 2012, 3:11 PM

Don’t make the Ninjago fans mad Jacob, they’r ruthless LOL, I learned the hard way LOL… but I agree with everything you say.

  • Grievous234 September 12, 2012, 4:08 PM

Looks pretty cool I suppose but nothing can ever replace ninjago in my mind.

  • Dude September 12, 2012, 4:24 PM

    Ya Grievous!!!!!!

  • The Green Ninja September 12, 2012, 5:15 PM

I think this is a replacement for Ninjago. It is very similar as like the spinners and things but, the strings are new. Also, it has cards, weapons, and spinners! Those are all similar to Ninjago! I Think it is a replacement For it. I’m said Ninjago is ending. D=

  • Legolotr September 12, 2012, 5:34 PM

    Very interesting…

  • Kaito September 12, 2012, 6:24 PM

Looks like a mix of Thunder Cats and Beyblade…..

  • NinajgoFan515 September 12, 2012, 9:02 PM

    This looks stupid… -_-
    Ninjago is better

  • joey September 12, 2012, 10:13 PM

I don’t know… these sets look pretty cool! I still wish they would keep ninjago. Oh well, I guess all good storys must come to an end sooner of later.

    —————————-joey—————————

  • Padawan Ahsoka Tano September 12, 2012, 11:45 PM

    What the heck…
Those don’t even look like people! And if they are supposed to be some kind of animal-hybrid, they still don’t look very good at all. But it might just be because of the photo quality.
I hope this will be a worthy theme to replace Ninjago! So far, I’m not impressed… :/

  • Sam ninja of water September 13, 2012, 12:31 AM

    Interesting…

Admin, do you know anything else? And when is the next new ninjago?

    • admin September 13, 2012, 9:48 AM

Sam, I was reading something interesting yesterday. People who have seen the Legend of Chima sets say they are fantastic. Here is a quote from Brickset member Pezdez that you might find interesting:

“A series called Chima (imagine Animal heads like Cats, Lions, Alligators, Eagles, Dogs, but with cool scars and minifig bodies, and they have Ripcords instead of Spinners. This is replacing Ninjago.

The ripcords are on a sort of land vehicle as small as the spinners but sold like Ninjago in singles or 2 packs with tons of accessories. The vehicles are awesome in CHIMA as well they look like the character ( the alligator sea ship looks like an alligator face with heavy artillery and brand new wings for the eagle and hawk characters just wait I’m not making this up trust me you’ll see you may or may not like it but theres a ton of it coming out all at once on 1st Jan.

It’s cool how the CHIMA characters also have scars like the catlike character has 3 cuts across his face I only wish they put guns with them they have swords but just you wait everyone will love them there’s at least 15 plus items coming out with this.”

I think we should hold off with making negative judgements about the theme, as it seems that those who have seen it like it. Also, if LEGO has achieved such great success with an in-house theme once, I’m sure they can do it again. It is most likely that they have worked on this theme even harder… they know all too well that they have to produce something that would be at least as good as Ninjago, if not better. So yeah the pressure is on, and from what I have heard and read, Legend of Chima is going to be awesome. 😉

      • NRG PYTHOR September 13, 2012, 11:45 PM

Where did u get the info about the ship and Bird minifig?

        • admin September 14, 2012, 8:55 AM

It was posted by a Brickset member who has seen the sets. 😉

  • bejeken September 13, 2012, 6:21 AM

    cant wait

  • gid617 September 13, 2012, 8:13 AM

This seems to have a picture of one of the Chima Minifigs (plus the new type of Ninja!) – and it’s not confidential or preliminary: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/images/1409367827/ref=dp_image_0?ie=UTF8&n=266239&s=books

    • admin September 13, 2012, 9:49 AM

      Nice find! Love it! 😀

    • Zubashi September 13, 2012, 11:50 AM

I can also see Chase Mccain.

    • The Yellow Ninja September 13, 2012, 2:16 PM

OH MY GOSH! the pwr suits ARE the ones on “the warriors of stone”!

      • NRG PYTHOR September 13, 2012, 6:51 PM

Ok. Now i think Chima is ok… the only thing i like is the alligators, and eagal. But i still dont love it 😀 🙁 🙁

        • gid617 September 13, 2012, 8:20 PM

It seems like the animal things have masks insead of head like the snakes do. (I prefer masks, so that seems cool!) 😀

          • NRG PYTHOR September 13, 2012, 10:25 PM

What? Like a mask over their head?

            • gid617 September 14, 2012, 7:06 AM

That’s what it looked like to me. Of course, they still have animal heads (and you can see their eyes), but they have mass on top of that (and that’s what makes them look like thye have ears, etc.)

    • KING_BOO_XDDX September 14, 2012, 10:01 AM

well i Was going to say but you already did

    • Zubashi September 17, 2012, 2:46 PM

The one with Chima, New Ninja and Chase McCain has been replaced.

  • KING_BOO_XDDX September 14, 2012, 10:05 AM

    reminds me of thunder cats

  • legosw September 14, 2012, 4:55 PM

    strange

  • B-Minus September 14, 2012, 6:16 PM

This may be the next great LEGO series but, replacing NINJAGO?! I am pretty sure that LEGO is bringing out a third generation of NINJAGO so maybe its replacing something different.

    • NRG PYTHOR 42 September 14, 2012, 6:47 PM

It is replacing ninjago. After the third generation Chima is replacing it. 🙁 😥 😉

      • gid617 September 15, 2012, 7:05 AM

Actually it’s more like Ninjago’s third generation (with no spinners 🙁 ) will be released at the same time as LoC, and that will be the end of Ninjago but of course LoC will keep going. 😉 😀

        • Zubashi September 15, 2012, 8:12 AM

I’m certain there’ll be some spinners

          • NRG PYTHOR 42 September 15, 2012, 11:31 AM

WHAT! NO SPINNERS! Why would they do that!?

            • gid617 September 15, 2012, 8:17 PM

Yeah, apparently no spinners (my guess is they would compeate with Chima too much), it seems like this is a list of the 2013 Ninjago sets, and also Chima (just january):

I’m glad it seems like Kai’s set is only $10, that will make it easy to compleat my Kai colection! :d

              • NRG PYTHOR 42 September 15, 2012, 10:26 PM

LOC sound realy cheesy to me. It sounds like a bunch of animals with vehicals. 🙁

                • gid617 September 17, 2012, 6:40 AM

IDK, it sounds pretty cool to me! But I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. . . 😉

              • Zubashi September 16, 2012, 3:38 AM

I’ve seen the Lavals Lion-Quad or something similar on the back of Chi Battles set.

                • Zubashi September 16, 2012, 3:42 AM

Wait, 70002 is Lennox’s Lion Buggy.

              • admin September 16, 2012, 10:48 AM

                LOL! Information overload! 😀

  • Zubashi September 16, 2012, 2:43 AM

In other news, it was my birthday yesterday and I got 3 Ninjago sets:
Epic Dragon Battle, Ultra Sonic Raider and Fangpyre Truck Ambush.

  • Zubashi September 16, 2012, 3:26 AM

Also, according to the post gid copy and pasted (the sets), there will be a Golden Ninja. Destined to defeat the Stone Army?

    • NRG PYTHOR 42 September 16, 2012, 10:02 AM

The gold ninja iss mostly likely lloyd. It couldnt be anyone else, could it?

      • Zubashi September 16, 2012, 10:11 AM

New character? Sensei? Nya? One of the Ninja (idk about this one). It could be Lloyd but I think it’s not as he has the Ultra Dragon, not the Golden Dragon.

        • gid617 September 17, 2012, 6:39 AM

But as Lloyd combines the Spinjitzu forces inside him and he becomes better and better the green (which is a bit of overload on the blue side – yellow and blue make green) will (or could) change into gold AND the four-headed dragon change into one golden dragon! Anyway, the main reason for thinking that Lloyd is the golden ninja is because his ZX spinner was golden.

          • Zubashi September 17, 2012, 12:03 PM

That would take the prophecy of the Green Ninja fighting Lord Garmadon Pointless.

            • NRG PYTHOR 42 September 17, 2012, 7:54 PM

Or mabey just the dragon turns gold somhow OR its a new dragon.

            • gid617 September 18, 2012, 9:39 AM

Why? I didn’t say he would become golden before he fought his father! Then again, you do have a point, I guess Lloyd couldn’t turn gold (if he ever does) before he at least fights his dad. But I was kind of expecting him to unlockis full potential after defeating Garmadon, so maybe he’ll become gold then. 😉

              • Zubashi September 18, 2012, 11:29 AM

                Possibly.

  • josh September 19, 2012, 3:46 PM

My friends are mad that this will replace ninjago. But I cant wait!

  • Lilli September 23, 2012, 2:16 PM

REALLY?!?! (no offense to all fans of this) Why ninjago?!? CN shoud know if they replace ninjago that millions of fans will sue them.

This looks like it has potential. The story seems like it doesn’t exactly fit with that document about how they don’t want to promote fighting or violence and such, but I guess they’ve been pushing the boundaries of that in other sets too.

I hope we’ll get some new Castle (non-Lord of the Rings) sets at some point too. Not much chance until well after the Hobbit sets, though.

My son will not be happy that Ninjago will be replaced. He loves the show on CN and just had a Ninjago b-day party that I had to make all the supplies for. Lego’s is going to miss out on Ninjago if they cancel this too soon. the proucts are hard to find and spinner are always sold out. Why cancel product line when it is the #2 selling item. Very bad marketing decision. I don’t quite like the new Chima. Keep NINJAGO!

Thanks for sharing! A lot of people feel the way you do. At the same time LEGO also have to make decisions. They did not want the Ninjago product line to finish the same way as Bionicle, which also had (and still has) a huge fan base, however because LEGO dragged on the story for too long, it attracted no new fans, and by the end they couldn’t even give away the Bionicle sets for free. It is better to finish a story on a high note, rather then have it drag on and on. At least that is their logic. 😉

From what I know and have seen of Chima, it is going to be an excellent story. There is going to be a TV show, just like with Ninjago, starting in January. I would suggest to at least give it a chance. LEGO is great with developing interesting story lines and their cartoons are great. So please don’t be disappointed. There is much fun to come! 😀

IMO, Ninjago is barely getting started.
I think it had at least two more waves left.
The stuff, especially the spinners are always sold out.
At my son’s school a lot of his friends love Ninjago.

And I agree with others that Lego is jumping the gun by pulling this one.

RR, LEGO had no way of knowing how succesful Ninjago is going to be. It takes several years to fully develop a theme (story-lines, sets, games, movies, etc.) Even if they wanted to, there is no way they could continue now. As you have probably seen at the end of the final Episode, they left it open-ended with a possibility of continuation. Perhaps after Chima runs its course, they can bring Ninjago back. 😉

Also, historically speaking, LEGO didn’t want to fall into the same trap as they did with Bionicle. That was also a very popular LEGO theme, but by the end it was running really thin. It had die-hard long-time fans, but no new fans joined the ranks, so by the end they couldn’t even give Bionicle sets away for free. It is best to finish things on a high note, rather then dragging it on and on. At least to me that makes sense. 🙂
