LEGO The Hobbit Azog minifig – only 100!

If you thought Mr. Gold was the most expensive minifigure on the secondary market at over a $1,000, you might be interested to know that he has been toppled from his lofty position by another minifig. At the recent San Diego Comic-Con LEGO employees randomly gave away only 100 LEGO Azog minifigures from the LEGO The Hobbit line. 🙂

Comic Con LEGO Azog Minifigure

The LEGO Azog minifigure was not part of a raffle, like the exclusive LEGO Super Heroes minifigures that were also given away at Comic-Con (see: Comic-Con LEGO Super Heroes Minifigs!). Azog was simply handed out to random visitors to the LEGO booth throughout the event. And only 100! This definitely makes him one of the rarest minifigures of all time!

If you read The Hobbit or seen the movie, you know that Azog was one of the main antagonists of the dwarves. In the movie his role was greatly expanded and he was referred to as “The Pale Orc”. LEGO fans have been greatly desiring to get him in minifigure form.

LEGO The Hobbit Azog

The LEGO Azog minifigure doesn’t disappoint. He is very much in the likeness of the character in the movie. I like how LEGO made him taller by giving him a full upper-body mould, instead of just a moulded head. I have heard rumors that a slightly different and paler version of Azog will appear in a later LEGO set, but I haven’t seen this being confirmed. 🙄

Anyhow, if you would like to participate in the fun of bidding on the LEGO Azog minifigure, or just want to watch the bidding-war, you can check eBay. There is actually a poor soul who sold his Azog for a Buy-It-Now price of $29.95, without realizing the desirability and the rarity of this minifigure. The standard going price is around $1,500 and more. But who knows, you may luck out! SEE LEGO AZOG ON EBAY

What do you think? Do you like the LEGO Azog minifig? Would you like to get one? Or did you get one already? Would you like him to appear in a future LEGO The Hobbit set? Feel free to share your thoughts and discuss in the comment section below! 😉

This Minifigure is awesome! Personally, it looks WAY better than the one in the Attack of the Wargs set!

    • Fikko3107 July 30, 2013, 10:22 AM

I think that’s because that wasn’t Azog, but Yazneg, a new character created for the movie, similar to Lurtz. However, he was scrapped from the final cut. Perhaps he will appear more in the extended editions…

      • YTjedi July 30, 2013, 4:17 PM

Yazneg was actually in the final cut of the movie, just not at the final battle in the forest/mountainside. Yazneg initially leads the hunt of the dwarves until the Orcs are attacked by the elves. Then Azog feed Yazneg to the white warg at Weathertop due to his failure.

        • Shadrax the Overlord August 17, 2013, 4:31 PM

The reason why the put yazneg in the set, was because when Lego saw the scene to implement it as a set, it was in, what I guess you could call the beta stage. They had planned it out, but scrapped it before they released it to the public.

Looks like something I would want but looks too expensive. I like how they made his hands different colors.

    • The brick guy July 30, 2013, 1:11 PM

The other hand is in fact a hook not a differently coloured hand and is that metallic dark silver that was used for some of the skeleton tribes axe pieces in ninjago and I believe the axe heads were also used in the Viking theme.

  • nick_nox July 30, 2013, 11:23 AM

I love LEGO but not THAT much 😀

  • ninja of stealth July 30, 2013, 12:39 PM

yeah, that’s I little (a lot) out of my price range. the most expensive thing I’d buy would be in the hundreds, not the thousands!!!! and just for a minifigure! but yeah this minifigure is much better than the other one. 😀 >:D

  • legostuff71 July 30, 2013, 1:04 PM

You know how many LEGO sets I can buy with that amount of money.(a lot). I hope that LEGO puts AZOG in a set so, that people that did pay a lot of money that their effort becomes a mood point. The greed is unbelievable.

    • admin July 30, 2013, 1:46 PM

According to what I have read Mark Stafford (LEGO designer) said there there is going to be an Azog minifig in a future set, but a somewhat different design. Not sure if that refers to different color, or different print, or when the set will be out.

  • The brick guy July 30, 2013, 1:13 PM

Poor guy 30 quid when they could have got 1000 I suppose they weren’t a lego fan so didn’t realise how precious it is 😀 lol
If you didn’t get that it was a golem reference

    • The brick guy July 30, 2013, 1:14 PM

      Sorry auto correct gollum

    • admin July 30, 2013, 1:47 PM

Yeah, I think that was the first listing. Buy-It-Now was a really bad idea in this case. They should just have let the market decide and would have gotten a lot more $$$. 🙁

  • NRGkai July 30, 2013, 2:31 PM

WOW! hes way cool, like the head, i hope they release him or something like him in future sets.

  • D.B. Bricks July 30, 2013, 3:00 PM

Hey Admin, This is off topic, but there’s nowwhere that would fit though. Have you ever bought from AltBricks?

  • brick addict July 30, 2013, 5:08 PM

i feel bad for that guy but i wish i could have one for 30 bucks

  • Meneldur son of Garamar July 30, 2013, 5:37 PM

Wow! That Azog minifigure looks super. 🙂 The printing is fantastic though the weapon is driving me nuts! Admin, was it you that told me that he will reappear redone in a future set? If so I hope the thing they change is the weapon. And, yes, the Hobbit film expanded immensely on the Azog character. He’s dead by the time the story starts. And in the film Thror is beheaded during the Battle of Azanulbizar. In the book he was beheaded long before the battle even began. Thus began a long war between the Orcs and Naugrim, which ended at the gate of Moria. Azog was beheaded by Dain Ironfoot. As you can see the film kind of departed from what Tolkien wrote. Oh yeah! You can read the full story of the war of the Orcs and Dwarves in the Return of the King appendices. 🙂

    • Meneldur son of Garamar July 30, 2013, 5:38 PM

      Oops. Wrong email.

    • admin July 30, 2013, 8:13 PM

Yeah, that weapon is pretty lame, but we can always give him something else. 😉

I have read that Azog will appear in a future Hobbit set, but then the person who was quoted saying it denies that he ever said that. So I don’t know any more. But it is very likely. Why would they make a special mold for him if they would only use it for a 100 minifigs? That wouldn’t make sense. So yes, I still fully expect that he will be in a regular LEGO set.

As far as the differences between the book and the film, I like both versions. I know some people are upset about the changes, but I think they are reasonable. Tolkien was never big on character-development and both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films bring many of the characters much more alive and personal. I like that. But I also like the books. 🙂

      • Håkan July 31, 2013, 5:43 AM

They had to expand on something to make a film trilogy out of that thin Bilbo book… =/

        • admin July 31, 2013, 9:19 AM

Yeah, I’m a litte bummed out that they made three films out of it. I would have liked it to be one – to be consistent with the flow of the books. The LOTR trilogy is one of my favorite movies of all time. The first Hobbit movie I found dragging out quite a bit for no reason. I will still watch them all as I like Tolkien’s world, but I don’t think I will buy the DVDS. The story is just a lot thinner so would have done better with one movie. At least that’s what I think. 😉

          • Shadrax the Overlord August 17, 2013, 4:34 PM

You know what they should do? They should make 3 – 5 separate sets, then you could put them together to create the entire battle of five armies! That would be nice!

          • Shadrax the Overlord August 17, 2013, 4:40 PM

I think in the next movie they will be traveling through mirkwood almost the entire time… Which means that, since there is such a small series of events occurring between the leaving of mirkwood and the battle of five armies, about half the time or something they will be doing the battle of five armies… Much similar to the two towers and the battle of helms deep.

  • Darth Awesome July 31, 2013, 2:14 AM

    LOOKS SO GOOD! MY PRECIOUS………

  • Beardless Dwarf July 31, 2013, 8:49 AM

Nice looking fig! I can’t imagine why anyone would want to pay that much for him. I am almost positive that he will be in a set so I will just wait and pick him up then. Like the Admin said it makes no sense for them to make a two new molds for only 100 minifigs that they are giving away for free.

  • Cross July 31, 2013, 12:07 PM

It continues to amaze me how far LEGO fans actually go for these minifigs. Azog is a good example of minifig rarity, just like mr. Gold. But, $ 1000? I’d buy something else with all that money for sure.

    • admin July 31, 2013, 1:59 PM

Yeah, some people just have to have them and willing to pay whatever it takes. Really interesting to watch! 🙄

      • Cross July 31, 2013, 5:11 PM

Yep, it is. Still don’t understand it though, very few people are willing to go that far for some pieces of plastic…

  • Andy July 31, 2013, 1:02 PM

I’ve noticed that the minifigures prices tend to go up and down every couple of days,I would buy 1 but there too expensive!!!

    • admin July 31, 2013, 2:00 PM

Andy, if you are considering getting one, also try some alternate searches. I have found the best deals on LEGO from sellers who mis-spelled something in their listing title or didn’t really know what they were selling. eBay is a fun place to shop! 😀

  • CraggerThePrinceOfChima August 8, 2013, 7:17 PM

Shouldn’t they have Azog in a lego set? LOL! I mean he is the main bad guy in the Hobbit theme!

    • admin August 8, 2013, 8:32 PM

He supposed to be coming in a LEGO set later this year. 😉

    • Timothy Park January 5, 2014, 8:35 PM

      He’s not!!!
      The necromancer is!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • CraggerThePrinceOfChima August 11, 2013, 5:06 PM

Shouldn’t Azog have the metal hand since Thorin severed it in the movie?

    • admin August 11, 2013, 7:36 PM

He does have a metal hand. You will see it if you look at the picture closer. 😉

  • CraggerThePrinceOfChima August 12, 2013, 9:20 AM

OH! I see it! If you look close enough. I couldn’t see it before because there was a lot of light shining on the metal hand.

  • Timothy Park January 5, 2014, 8:33 PM

The azog minifigure did apear in a lego set in december 2013 but there is nothing different

    • admin January 5, 2014, 8:37 PM

Tim, thanks for commenting. Please note that this is an older post when the first Azog minifigure appeared. At that time someone working at LEGO mentioned that there will be another Azog later, but slightly different. I don’t know if the information was incorrect or LEGO changed their mind, but stuff like this can happen. Anyway, more Azog the better! 😀

  • Ryan February 14, 2014, 6:18 PM

I’m sorry but what is the point making mr gold if they realease more figs in lower numbers? I mean c’mon I don’t think it’s fair how there’s no comic con in Britain I would really like one here gives me a chance to get some rare figs I really want that movie batman but I’m not paying £200 for a minifigure

  • Ryan February 14, 2014, 6:22 PM

That fig should have came with two flesh hands to add a bit of difference to it because he has two hands when he holds his hammer

  • Ryan February 15, 2014, 6:17 PM

Oh no! I nearly got a agog comic con for 100 pounds! But the idiot who I was bidding against threw in another 1000 pound! Dammit my luck anyway if I had a time machine I would find that pour soul who sold his minifigure very cheaply and tell him how much it’s worth we’ll I’m really shocked by that story

  • Liana January 19, 2021, 8:18 PM

I have one of those from Comic-con San Diego from 2013. I’m trying to sell it but I don’t know where or how! Sorry I know this post is super old but I’d love some help with it.
    Thank you
