Custom vs. LEGO Gingerbread Man comparison

One of the most fun minifigures in LEGO Collectible Minifigs Series 11 is the Gingerbread Man. Interestingly, shortly before the official LEGO Gingerbread Man was released, two LEGO customizers collaborated and worked on their own version; CrazyBricks who designed the head, and BrickArms who took care of the printing. And not just any printing, but using puffy ink, to really make the details look like icing. Yum! BrickArms also made special pink guns with sprinkles for the little guy! More yum! ๐Ÿ™‚

LEGO Gingerbread Man by CrazyBricks

So let’s see how the two gingerbread man versions look next to each other! Flickr member enigmabadger took some helpful side-by-side pictures of the gingerbread man made by LEGO and the CrazyBricks/BrickArms gingerbread man that were both released around the same time. (I guess a gingerbread man was definitely meant to happen!)

LEGO Gingerbread Man Comparison

The two gingerbread man concepts are actually quite similar, and both are excellent takes on what a minifig gingerbread man should look like. Although the puffy printing by BrickArms really makes the custom gingerbread man look extra tasty! ๐Ÿ˜€

LEGO Gingerbread Man Details

Both of the gingerbread man minifigs come with fun accessories. The LEGO version with a cup that says “Dunk Me!” and the custom version with two pink BrickArms guns with raised and multi-colored sprinkles printing. ๐Ÿ™„

LEGO Gingerbread Man Side-by-Side

From the side-view you can see that the two gingerbread man heads are similar in size, but are also somewhat different. The LEGO version has some brown “frosting” sandwiched between the two halves, making it look like a cookie. Kind of strange, as I don’t recall real gingerbread men having a cookie head, but the feature actually makes this new LEGO piece quite useful for other purposes; like as a giant cookie, sandwich or burger.

They are both nice looking mini-figs. The puff print makes the crazy brick version look more realistic. While the LEGO version lighter coloration and spice look truer to ginger bread cookies.

Yeah, both of them have “sweet” features. Although I have never seen a gingerbread cookie with speckles in it. I thought poor guy has chicken-pox! ๐Ÿ™„

Actually I recall some of the Gingerbread men we used to make coming out with the speckles. But not too often and I’m not sure why. Maybe little clumps of brown sugar?

The puff printing is really nice. But the dk brown color makes it look almost more like a chocolate cookie. The decoration colors are nice though. On the other hand the LEGO one is a bit more – professional, maybe? It looks like it could really be alive (well, sort of), and the frosting more carefully (and sparingly!) put on. It’s kind of like the difference between a store-bought cookie and a homemade one!

And I’ve never seen a head done like that (two pieces with frosting) either. It’s a nice touch, though!

I think it just depends of how dark molasses you are using. I make gingerbread cookies all the time and because I use blackstrap molasses (yum!) they turn out very dark, like the BA minifig. But if someone uses a lighter molasses the spices would show up – those are the little speckles in the cookie, as someone informed me yesterday. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Good point about the store bought/home-made gingerbread men! When I was a kid me and my brothers and sisters always wanted to put on tons of frosting! Therefore I think I like the BA one better, but the LEGO version is very cute too. ๐Ÿ˜›

We generally use brown sugar instead of molasses (it’s hard to find here), so I guess that’s why a dark ginger-bread man looks odd to me. That the specks are the spices makes sense!

Our cookies usually didn’t/don’t last long enough for frosting! But when they did they got smothered… ๐Ÿ˜€

Oh, yeah, brown sugar is nice too! Yum! ๐Ÿ˜›

yum gingerbread! ๐Ÿ˜ˆ the one with the little “sprinkles” is maybe a different kind of cookie, or something.

I am positive that I have never made nor eaten a gingerbread man cookie before. I’m not even sure what molasses are; Aren’t they some kind of a…syrup?

            • admin October 29, 2013, 9:55 PM

Oh! You never had gingerbread cookies???!!! Gotta send you some! Molasses is the byproduct of cooking down sugarcane, sugar beets, etc. into sugar. It has the consistency of maple-syrup or light honey, it is black, has a delicious taste, and is very high in iron. My favorite is blackstrap molasses as it has the most intense flavor. Some milder varieties are also available. I just eat it with a spoon! ๐Ÿ˜€

I like the sprinkle gun! maybe it shoots out sprinkles instead of bullets! mu ha-ha-ha! ๐Ÿ˜ˆ maybe? that wouldn’t be as cool though so never mind. but the LEGO version of the gingerbread man would be useful for a giant cookie or hamburger. and also the LEGO version has printing on the arms so that’s always awesome! so I think I like the LEGO version better! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

While I like the new idea for the head on both sides (and I’m surprised they’re the exact same size!) I prefer the LEGO head because of the cream filling element. http://dagsbricks.blogspot.com/2013/09/lego-techniques-gingerbread-man-head.html

  • Vani October 28, 2013, 1:56 PM

Really like these! The BA one is more accurate with the puffy ink and all, but the LEGO one does have a useful head for burgers! ๐Ÿ˜€

I really would like to get some of those skulls. I hope they get funded.

Yeah, and also the zombie Gingerbread Man. I thought to add that to this post too, but then I decided not to as it is not yet available.

I like Lego’s version the most. The frosting on the wrist is a nice touch. Whenever I make a gingerbread man my plan is this: get as much candy and frosting as possible on it and give it a face 8).

    • admin October 29, 2013, 2:53 PM

LOL! Me too! Let that gingerbread man drown in frosting!
