LEGO sets retiring soon & sales and deals

The Sales and Deals section of the Online LEGO Shop was recently updated with some interesting surprises. In addition, the Online LEGO Shop in the UK listed all the large sets that will be retiring soon, which is also interesting to see. Below we will take a look at both lists and see what is worth to buy before getting retired, and before the Double VIP Points period expires in a few days. So let’s begin. 🙂

LEGO Double VIP Points Special

ONLINE LEGO SHOP SALES & DEALS: A number of the older LEGO Dimensions packs are on sale, but this is not particularly a new development. You can buy most LEGO Dimensions packs at about half price both directly from LEGO and at other retailers. What is more interesting is that several newly released larger sets are on sale as well, with 20% off the regular price. This includes the #21127 LEGO Minecraft The Fortress, the #70322 LEGO Nexo Knights Axl’s Tower Carrier, and the #41067 LEGO Disney Princess Belle’s Enchanted Castle. Other notable sets on sale are some of the LEGO Nexo Knights Ultimate Knight packs, and the #40203 LEGO Vampire and Bat Halloween set. Also, the #41068 LEGO Disney Princess Arendelle Castle Celebration, and the #41066 LEGO Disney Princess Anne & Kristoff’s Sleigh Adventure have been on sale for many months now. They are great sets, but it is possible that LEGO made too many of them and they are not selling fast enough. You can find all the discounted sets under the Sales and Deals section of the Online LEGO Shop.

ONLINE LEGO SHOP RETIRING SOON: While the US version of the Online LEGO Shop hasn’t been updated yet with sets retiring soon, the UK version lists a number of large and exclusive sets that are scheduled to retire. This means that once the current stock is gone, LEGO will make no more of these sets. Four of the sets are from the LEGO Ideas line, which are limited release to begin with. The four sets are: #21108 LEGO Ideas Ghostbusters Ecto-1, #21302 LEGO Ideas The Big Bang Theory, #21303 LEGO Ideas WALL-E, and #21304 LEGO Ideas Doctor Who. None of these sets are on sale, but if you want one, it is best to get them now before they will disappear and prices on the secondary market go up. You can find them under the LEGO Ideas section of the Online LEGO Shop.

There are also two large LEGO Star Wars sets retiring soon. The #10236 LEGO Star Wars Ewok Village (released in 2013), and the #75059 LEGO Star Wars Sandcrawler (released in 2014) have both been around for a while, so it makes sense that LEGO is retiring them, even though they are both excellent sets. The LEGO Star Wars Ewok Village, in particular, is a great set even for non-Star Wars fans, who would like to build a nice forest scene for elves, Na’vi, or Robin Hood and his merry band of outlaws. You can find both sets under the LEGO Star Wars section of the Online LEGO Shop.

Two last two sets retiring soon are the #10218 LEGO Creator Pet Shop and the #10234 LEGO Creator Sydney Opera House. The LEGO Creator Pet Shop has been the longest standing LEGO Modular Buildings, first released back in 2011. It is the only building in the series that has a split footprint, making it extremely versatile. Even if you already have one, I would recommend getting another, just in case you ever need it in your layout. Half of the building is a generic apartment, while the pet shop side can easily be converted into other stores to create more variety. And the LEGO Creator Sydney Opera House is a beautiful and accurate display piece. You can find both sets under the LEGO Creator section of the Online LEGO Shop.

Also, remember that LEGO is offering Double VIP Points until the end of October. This is the best time to get large sets to maximize your VIP Points. There will be another Double VIP Points period in December, but by that time many of these retiring sets could be gone.

I ended up purchasing a second set of the Pet Shop and I’ll be totally honest I can’t remember if I either had the idea originally or saw it on-line, but it can be fun to build the second apartment building as a mirror to the first one. Also a bit of a mind bender if I remember correctly! I have mine set up with the two doors close to each other but it’s certainly easy enough to switch them around if you prefer them that way.

Here’s a Youtube video (not mine) to demonstrate the idea: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8eUqrWPn5ww

Nice! Yeah, I have seen several people do that mirror image setup. The Pet Shop is such an incredibly versatile set. It is one of the reasons it stayed around for so long. Another is that both are good looking, but simple buildings, so they nicely fit in anywhere, and also easy to customize. The Pet Shop can be turned into any other shop with just some simple modifications. And the apartment side can be furnished in so many ways. Great set all in all. I’m glad you were able to get a second one. 🙂

We have ZERO items in Sales & Deals here in the UK. The USA & Canada both have 37 sale items in Lego online shop. Doesn’t really seem fair, that the rest of world cannot grab a bargain from the Lego online store. Really annoying, because at the end of the day all customers should be treated the same!!

Judith, the discrepancy in sales usually has to do with what each region has in stock, and also what does and doesn’t sell well. The US market is very different from the market in the UK. We get our LEGO sets from the factory in Mexico (mostly), while you guys get them from mainland Europe (Denmark, Hungary, the Czech Republic). What sells well here may not sell well in the UK, and vice versa. There are even sets that only appear in a certain region based on market research and demand. It is normal for companies to have different strategies for different markets, based on extensive market research.

For example I read that LEGO City set are number one in Europe, while in the US the top sellers are Star Wars and Ninjago. LEGO does have to take these things into consideration, otherwise they could end up with huge stocks of sets just sitting in one region, when they could easily sell them somewhere else. And when they do end up with extras in an area, it makes sense to just sell that stock locally at a discounted price, rather than shipping it half way around the word. So there is a lot of logistics involved. It is not about not treating customers equally, even if sometimes it feels that way. 🙂

Judith, I think it’s unfair that the Assembly Square will be $211 (£170) in the UK, but things are different in different countries/parts of the world.

      • admin October 30, 2016, 12:11 PM

Yeah, a lot of the pricing differences has to do with taxes and other fees companies have to pay in different countries. There is not much LEGO can do about that.

Probably a silly question, but can’t Judith buy from the US site? I’ve often wondered. I grew up in Germany and England, so the regional sets would interest me. A central site offering all sets to everyone would be nice.

    • admin October 28, 2016, 4:47 PM

Michelle, not a silly question at all. LEGO automatically chooses your region based on your shipping address, and while it is possible to change your region just to see what is available in other regions, once you start shopping, the region will change back to your own.

Also, even if LEGO would allow international shipping, shipping fees would negate any savings you would get on a sale. International shipping fees can be enormous. Especially on sealed sets. I’m a BrickLink and eBay seller and after the most recent rate increases I simply had to stop selling internationally, as the fees are so crazy.

Of course as a large company LEGO would get some discount on international shipping, but still it would be higher than just buying locally. If you are interested in regional sets, BrickLink is your best option. Just choose the seller that is closest to you to save on shipping fees. 🙂

Mmmmm it just seems ludicrous to me that in order to save money, I have to purchase the earlier wave Lego Dimension sets from a seller in North America. Even with international postage costs, these sets (boxed) work out at an approx saving of 50% compared to the UK price. This seller must have purchased the sets when they were drastically reduced in price, and is obviously making a profit.

        • admin October 29, 2016, 9:46 AM

Judith, individual sellers could be getting their stock from various places. We do get regular sales on Dimensions sets – usually 50% off, sometimes more. Also, the dollar is pretty strong now compared to the pound, so there is that as well. I also shop from international sellers from time to time. European sellers usually have a much better stock on rare parts and colors. 🙂

I’m glad I got a copy of the pet shop before it retired. It’s so versatile even if you only have one copy of the set. I furnished the Brownstone house and expanded the apartment up top to have a twin minifigure bed and a bathroom with shower. Sadly you can’t modify the interior’s of the new modulars as easily without taking away original elements. I guess the top floor of the Parisian Restaurant can qualify as I turned it into a second apartment.

I wonder if the release of The Disney Castle 71040 hurt the sales of the princess castles.

    • admin October 29, 2016, 11:24 PM

Hm… that’s an interesting point. And very well could be. I do remember hearing that LEGO will rename the Disney Princess line to simply Disney. Looks like this is going to be a much bigger theme for LEGO, not just pink castles for girls. I expect more awesome sets on the level of the Disney Castle. But we will see… 🙂
