July 2017 – new LEGO sets & promotions

While we got a huge number of new LEGO sets in June (see: June 2017 – New LEGO Sets and Promotions, and reviews at the end of this post), LEGO also kept a few sets and promotions for July. If you need a break from all the summer outdoor activities, take a look at what LEGO has to offer this month. Details below. 🙂

FREE MINI LEGO PIGGY BANK: From July 10th until the end of the month you can get a #40251 LEGO Mini Piggy Bank free with purchases of $75 or more. This is a cute little 3-in-1 set that can be rebuilt into three different animals. This special is valid on all items at official LEGO stores and the Online LEGO Shop.

LEGO DOUBLE VIP POINTS: This is probably the most important event for dedicated LEGO fans this month. Double VIP Points don’t come up that often, and they are a great way to maximize your savings. Normally, you would get one VIP Point for every dollar you spend, and once you reach 100 VIP Points you can redeem them for a $5 saving on a future purchase. During the Double VIP Points period, you earn twice as many points, so your savings add up much faster. This is the best time to make larger purchases that you have been holding off, but of course, it works on smaller orders as well. Keep in mind that this offer is only valid until the end of this week, so make sure you don’t miss out. You might want to start with the What’s New section of the Online LEGO Shop.

LEGO VIP EARLY ACCESS: Starting on July 17th, LEGO VIP members will get early access to the brand new #10258 LEGO Creator London Bus we talked about the other day (see: LEGO Creator London Bus Press-Release). Regular release will be on August 1st. It is already listed under the LEGO Creator section of the Online LEGO Shop.

JULY LEGO STORE EVENTS: If you live near a LEGO store, there are some fun events you could participate in. From July 1st-16th, you can be one of the first 80 people to make a $75 purchase at a LEGO store to register for an exclusive 18+ LEGO BrickHeadz Wonder Woman building event, which will take place between July 17th to the 31st (actual dates vary by store). On July 11th and 12th the free VIP Monthly Mini Model Build is an octopus (you need to pre-register your child for this event). Then, on July 14th and the 28th you can join the Family Game Night to try out the #40161 LEGO What Am I? game, and the #40174 LEGO Iconic Chess set. You will also get 50% off the price of the LEGO What Am I? game, if you purchase the chess set.

LEGO MINECRAFT THE MOUNTAIN CAVE: The #21137 LEGO Minecraft The Mountain Cave is now available for everyone not just LEGO VIP members. This is the largest LEGO Minecraft set ever released, and it is massive! This would be a great purchase during the Double VIP Points period. You can find it under the LEGO Minecraft section of the Online LEGO Shop.

UPDATE ON LEGO IDEAS APOLLO SATURN V: If you missed out on the #21309 LEGO Ideas NASA Apollo Saturn V, you are not alone. Due to immense popularity, the set was out of stock within the first half an hour after it was added to the Online LEGO Shop, and it has been out of stock ever since. If you did make a purchase during the first couple of days of June, you probably already got the set, or it is likely on its way (I ordered mine on the 2nd of June, and even though it showed as out of stock with a 30-day backorder, I received it on the 7th of June). If you made a purchase later, it is best to be patient and wait until it is back in stock, rather than pay significantly more to resellers. This is what LEGO’s customer service wrote about the shortage:

“This is a very popular set and we’ve had a lot more orders than we expected. We don’t have any in stock at the moment, but don’t worry, we’re working hard to make more. Due to the overwhelming number of backorders for this item, we’ve also decided to make it temporarily unavailable until our distribution catches up with the thousands of backorders we currently have. No need to purchase the item through resellers on third party sites. We are making more, and this set will be around for a couple years. Keep an eye on the LEGO Ideas section of the Online LEGO Shop regularly, and as soon as we have an expected stock date, you will have ability to order or place a backorder for the item.”

July is going to be a great month to catch up on the summer LEGO sets that were released in June, especially during the Double VIP Points period. This includes the LEGO City Jungle, LEGO City Coast Guard, LEGO Creator, LEGO Elves, LEGO Friends, LEGO Star Wars, LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, and the second wave of The LEGO Batman Movie sets. You can find them all under the What’s New section of the Online LEGO Shop.

What do you think? Are you excited about all the new LEGO sets this summer? Do you have any favorite sets you are planning to add to your collection? Did you get some of them already? Feel free to share your thoughts and own review in the comment section below! 😉

LEGO Creator London Bus press-release

You might remember the #40220 LEGO Creator Mini London Bus, a small promotional item that was available last year. Well, this year LEGO decided to release a larger version of the iconic vehicle; the #10258 LEGO Creator Expert London Bus. Below is the full press-release with pictures, and the designer-video. Look through them, and let’s discuss! 🙂

Here is the official description of the set: Take a nostalgic journey with this LEGO Creator Expert replica of the world-famous double-decker London Bus. Grab the hand pole and step onto the open rear boarding deck, complete with a used ticket bin and fire extinguisher. Then take the half-spiral staircase to the sightseeing deck where you’ll find a cozy seating area and a number of other items, including a forgotten umbrella, newspaper, empty beverage can and even discarded chewing gum stuck under a slightly-worn seat. Slide the door to access the driver’s cab with panoramic windscreen, lift the hood to reveal the engine, remove the roof and upper deck to access the interior, and choose your favorite decade with the reversible transit-advertising posters, featuring a 1950s or present-day London promotion. From the distinctive lines and curves of its bright-red bodywork, to its specially made standard-tread tires and destination sign, this beautifully crafted model oozes authenticity and intricate details that capture the character and charm of a celebrated London icon! 1,686 pieces. Price: $139.99, £109.99, €119.99

  • The London Bus comes with an array of brick-built features and details, including large windows, bright red curved bodywork, panoramic windshield, reversible transit advertising posters provided as printed labels, specially made standard-tread tires and a destination sign. It also has an opening hood with engine, detailed driver’s cab with sliding door, and a removable roof and upper deck for access to the detailed interior.
  • Interior details include worn look seating, open rear boarding deck with a hand pole, ticket bin, fire extinguisher and a half-spiral staircase that leads to the sightseeing deck. Additional authentic detailing includes a forgotten umbrella, newspaper, empty beverage can and discarded chewing gum elements.
  • Choose your favorite decade with the miniature, reversible transit advertising posters, featuring a 1950s or present day London promotion.
  • Remove the roof and upper deck for full access to the detailed interior.
  • Slide open the driver’s door to access the detailed cab with panoramic windscreen.
  • Lift the hood to access the engine.
  • Special elements include a new-for-August-2017 tire with standard tread, quarter bows and arches in red, and 1x1x1 A2/3 bricks with vertical studs.
  • This model is scaled for shelf display alongside other models in the LEGO Creator Expert vehicle series.
  • Measures over 7” (18cm) high, 13” (34cm) long and 5” (13cm) wide.

And here is the designer-video, where LEGO Creator Senior Designer Morten Graff-Wang explains the features of the set, and there are also a couple of building animations with more fun details.

Pretty red bus, isn’t it? It is interesting to note that the description says that the set is meant to be displayed alongside the other LEGO Creator Expert vehicles like, the #10220 LEGO Creator Volkswagen T1 Camper, the #10242 LEGO Creator MINI Cooper, the #10248 LEGO Creator Ferrari F40, and the #10252 LEGO Creator Volkswagen Beetle. These other vehicles are not completely to scale with each other, but they are fairly close, and all of them are much larger than minifig-scale. On the other hand, even though the #10258 LEGO Creator London Bus is not described as minifig-compatible, the images clearly show that the seats and accessories are regular minifig size. The overall vehicle is still larger than a standard LEGO City bus would be, but perhaps with some modification it could be included in a LEGO City layout.

The launch date for the #10258 LEGO Creator London Bus is going to be August 1st, with early access to LEGO VIP members on July 17th. Due to the local relevance of the set, there will be some special unveiling events at the five LEGO brand stores in the London area on July 1st. And it also listed already at the LEGO Creator section of the Online LEGO Shop.

What do you think? How do you like the LEGO Creator London Bus? Do you have any of the other LEGO Creator Expert vehicles? Which one is your favorite so far? Feel free to share your thoughts and discuss in the comment section below! 😉
