LEGO Ninjago Skybound sets review

One of the most interesting collection of new sets that was released this month is for the LEGO Ninjago line. The sets feature scenes from Season 6 of the LEGO Ninjago Masters of Spinjitzu TV show with sky pirates riding awesome sky vehicles. The good guys aren’t left behind either and got a couple of new dragons, but this wave definitely represents the baddies better. This is not a bad thing, because bad guys often have the most unique gear and accessories. There are seven new sets in the LEGO Ninjago line, and we will take a look at each of them. 🙂

LEGO Ninjago Skybound

#70599 LEGO NINJAGO COLE’S DRAGON: While this set is very small, the dragon looks really good and quite respectable. Also, the part-selection is great with two of those new “A” plates, a bunch of ball-joints and small curved slopes, and sand-green cheese-slopes! Here is the official description: Ride Cole’s Dragon into battle against Bucko! Pose the neck, wings and legs of the dragon and fly into attack. Defeat the sky pirate and free trapped Zane from the special Djinn Blade! Includes 2 minifigures: Cole and Bucko. 98 pieces. Price: $9.99 – BUY HERE

#70600 LEGO NINJAGO NINJA BIKE CHASE: This is the second smallest set in the new LEGO Ninjago line, but it is actually one of the best. The two bikes are excellent! Also, check out those new swords! Here is the official description: Target the sky pirate’s flyer with Kai’s bike’s hidden cannons/boosters. Dodge the flyer’s bombs and aim the elemental water cannon from Nya’s awesome bike. Take his flyer down then fold out Kai’s bike’s golden Ninja blades to attack. You must defeat Sqiffy and free Cole from the Djinn Blade! Includes 3 minifigures with assorted weapons: Kai, Nya and Sqiffy. 231 pieces. Price: $19.99 – BUY HERE

#70601 LEGO NINJAGO SKY SHARK: This is a very interesting aircraft, mixing the sleek look of a jet with elements of a pirate ship. Then the whole thing is accessories with bones, anchors, swords, pistols, fish, and more. I think kids are going to love this thing. Here is the official description: Take on Flintlocke’s Sky Shark with Ninja Lloyd! Send up the drone to check out this awesome jet with dangerous blades, guns and loads of cool pirate details. And beware—the Sky Shark could drop dynamite or rotten fish at any moment! Then convert the drone into a jetpack for Lloyd and launch the Ninja hero into battle. Bring down the Sky Shark and fight to free trapped Kai from the Djinn Blade! Includes 2 minifigures: Lloyd and Flintlocke. 221 pieces. Price: $19.99 – BUY HERE

#70601 LEGO Ninjago

#70602 LEGO NINJAGO JAY’S ELEMENTAL DRAGON: Nice big dragon we got here! Lots of blue pieces and good articulation – although not as good as in the small dragon Cole got. I really like the harpoon hook shooter – a very delightful design with the monkey and stud shooter. Here is the official description: Defeat Cyren and Monkey Wretch with Jay’s Elemental Dragon! Jump into the dragon’s saddle and grab the reins. Snap the jaws and adjust the head, wings, legs and tail for awesome battle poses. Dodge Cyren’s harpoon hook shooter and the pirate flyer’s six-shooting rapid shooter. Fire the spring-loaded shooters to take down the flyer and then release Nya from the Djinn Blade! Includes 2 minifigures: Jay and Cyren, plus Monkey Wretch. 350 pieces. Price: $29.99 – BUY HERE

#70603 LEGO NINJAGO RAID ZEPPELIN: This is one of the most unique sets in the whole series, with a sideways mounded hot air balloon in dark orange. The ship itself is quite small, but it comes with some nice action features. Here is the official description: Fly high with Zane to battle Doubloon’s mighty Raid Zeppelin! Swerve clear of the Zeppelin’s powerful cannons and dynamite dropped through the trap door. Fire the flyer’s elemental ice stud shooters and board the airship. Face-off against Doubloon and Clancee to grab the Djinn Blade and free your fellow Ninja warrior Jay! Includes 3 minifigures: Zane, Doubloon and Clancee. 294 pieces. Price: $29.99 – BUY HERE

#70604 LEGO NINJAGO TIGER WIDOW ISLAND: I very much like LEGO Ninjago temples and training grounds – they are nicely designed Asian style buildings, with gorgeous colors, printed elements, and other details. In this set we get a very small temple, but it is interesting to note that it has a similar rock-work, vegetation, and ponds in medium-azure, as in the #70751 LEGO Ninjago Temple of Airjitzu – which is the ultimate beauty amongst all LEGO Ninjago sets. So if you already have that set, this one can be a nice addition. Here is the official description: Ninja alert! Tiger Widow Island is under attack! Mighty Dogshank is approaching carrying her huge anchor weapon. Fight back with Nya’s katana and drop coconuts on Dogshank from the tower and Sensei Wu’s hot air balloon. Watch out for Sqiffy’s pirate flyer and make the palm tree fall to knock him off the ladder. Hide out in the cave—and beware of the giant venomous spider roaming the island! Defeat the pirate invaders and free trapped Lloyd from the special Djinn Blade! Includes 4 minifigures: Nya, Cole, Sensei Wu and Sqiffy, plus a Dogshank big figure. 450 pieces. Price: $49.99 – BUY HERE

#70605 LEGO NINJAGO MISFORTUNE’S KEEP: This is the largest set in the new wave of LEGO Ninjago line, with the headquarters of the sky pirates. It is a very unusual design with a lot of interesting features and accessories, so make sure you check out the video-review below to see them all. Here is the official description: Launch a surprise attack on the sky pirates’ awesome HQ! The evil Djinn Nadakhan and the crew of Misfortune’s Keep are threatening to destroy Ninjago. Soar sky-high with Lloyd’s booster jet and operate the winch to lower Jay into battle. Beware of Misfortune’s Keep’s hidden cannons, disc shooters and the pirate jet taking off from the launchpad. Can you help the Ninja to defeat Nadakhan and free trapped Wu from the golden Djinn Blade? Includes 6 minifigures: Jay, Lloyd, Kai, Bucko, Nadakhan and Flintlocke, plus Monkey Wretch. 754 pieces. Price: $79.99 – BUY HERE

So as you can see, this is a pretty substantial wave of sets for LEGO Ninjago. In the video play-list below you can find detailed reviews of all of the sets by JANGBRiCKS, and also a summary video at the end of the play-list showing you all the sets at once.

I would say that this is a very interesting and well-designed series of LEGO Ninjago sets. I particularly like the color-scheme for the sky pirates, and all the pirate-ish accessories added to each of the sets. Even if you are not interested in Ninjago, these sets can be a great source of unique parts and accessories. Also, to sweeten your purchase, LEGO is offering a free #30422 LEGO Ninjago Kai’s Mini Dragon from March 1st to the 25th with purchases of $35 or more. You can find all the new sets under the LEGO Ninjago section of the Online LEGO Shop.

Large LEGO Star Wars sets and custom models are definitely impressive, but you can have Star Wars fun in a small scale too. LEGO knows this as well, and in 2012-2013 they released twelve sets in the LEGO Star Wars Planets series, which was replaced with the LEGO Star Wars Microfighters in 2014. While LEGO Star Wars Planets was definitely an interesting idea, the LEGO Star Wars Microfighters series is better received because of their cuteness, and because the included minifigs can actually ride the miniature vehicles. So far three waves of LEGO Star Wars Microfighters have been released, with a total of eighteen sets. 🙂

And the LEGO Star Wars Microfighters sets are not just for collecting. You can also create whole scenes for them as well. LEGO fan Boba-1980 did just that, and built a LEGO Star Wars rebel base under attack, featuring the miniature #75035 LEGO Star Wars Millennium Falcon, the #75032 LEGO Star Wars X-wing Fighter, and the #75031 LEGO Star Wars TIE Interceptor. And another scene with the #75035 LEGO Star Wars Millennium Falcon and the #75075 LEGO Star Wars AT-AT in a cave. Notice how both setting have an overall cute vibe, not just the vehicles. Small dioramas like this are excellent both for play and display, and they don’t take up so much space and parts as building big Star Wars models. See more at Boba-1980’s flickr gallery.

Going even further with the cuteness, LEGO fan Nick Chen, created a series of tiny LEGO Star Wars ships that are worn as costumes by minifigs. Below I have included a couple of pictures of the Star Wars costumes, and you can see more at Nick’s flickr gallery.

If you like to play around with small LEGO sets, the LEGO Star Wars Microfighters selection is an excellent choice. They give you tiny versions of iconic Star Wars ships, a good selection of parts, and great minifigs – all for just $10 each. And they may even inspire you to build whole scenes around them, like the examples above. It is a lot easier to work with small models like this, as they don’t require so much commitment in building time and parts. If you would like to give it a try, you can find the current wave of Microfighters under the LEGO Star Wars section of the Online LEGO Shop.

So what do you think? How do you like the LEGO Star Wars Microfighters? Do you just collect them or expand them too? And what do you think of the rebel base and the costumes featured here? Are there any other small LEGO Star Wars models that you really like? Feel free to share in the comment section below! 😉
