As you will see from the details below, March is turning out to be a very exciting month for LEGO fans, with a number of new LEGO sets in many categories, great promotions, and even Double VIP Points! So let’s take a closer look at what we got this month. 🙂

LEGO Store Calendar April 2016

NEW LEGO NINJAGO SETS & FREE POLYBAG: The new wave of LEGO Ninjago sets are finally released, featuring scenes from Season 6 of the LEGO Ninjago Masters of Spinjitzu TV show. This is a particularly interesting season with sky pirates, a steampunk-ish brown and dark orange color-scheme, and many wonderful new accessories. The #70600 LEGO Ninjago Ninja Bike Chase, the #70603 LEGO Ninjago Raid Zeppelin and the #70605 LEGO Ninjago Misfortune’s Keep are especially nice. And we also get a couple of new dragons. To sweeten your purchase, LEGO is offering a free #30422 LEGO Ninjago Kai’s Mini Dragon from March 1st to the 25th with purchases of $35 or more. Please note that this promotion is not just for Ninjago related purchases, although I would think it is most interesting to Ninjago fans. You can find all the new sets under the LEGO Ninjago section of the Online LEGO Shop.

Many LEGO fans stock up at this time, especially on large exclusive sets that otherwise never go on sale. So make sure you are logged in with your VIP account this month when you visit the Online LEGO Shop.

NEW LEGO JUNIORS SETS: LEGO Juniors is also getting six new sets. LEGO Juniors is aimed at younger kids who are not quite ready for the complexity of larger LEGO sets. The instructions are simple, vehicles and buildings come with pre-made larger pieces. However a lot of older LEGO fans are also interested in these sets because of the nice accessories, and because all the decorated elements are printed instead of using stickers. In this wave the LEGO Juniors offers sets in various LEGO themes; #10720 LEGO Juniors Police Helicopter (LEGO City), #10721 LEGO Super Heroes Iron Man vs. Loki (LEGO Super Heroes), #10722 LEGO Juniors Snake Showdown and #10725 LEGO Juniors Lost Temple (LEGO Ninjago), #10723 LEGO Juniors Ariel’s Dolphin Carriage and #10729 LEGO Juniors Cinderella’s Carriage (LEGO Disney Princess). You can find all the new sets under the LEGO Juniors section of the Online LEGO Shop.

NEW LEGO SPEED CHAMPIONS SETS: There are seven new LEGO Speed Champions sets to extent your collection of race cars. The largest one is the #75876 Porsche 919 Hybrid and 917K Pit Lane with two vehicles and a pit setup, than the #75875 Ford F-150 Raptor & Ford Model A Hot Rod with a really sweet hot rod and a small garage, and the #75874 Chevrolet Camaro Drag Race with two cars and a start-line. The other sets contain individual race cars and a driver. Note that, just like with previous vehicles in this theme, they are heavily stickered, so the recommended minimum age is a bit higher than normal – these sets are mainly geared towards collectors and those who appreciate realistic LEGO race cars. You can find them all under the LEGO Speed Champions section of the Online LEGO Shop.

As you can see, there is a great variety of new LEGO sets to choose from. If you are a LEGO VIP member, I would suggest that you wait until the 7th of March to take advantage of the Double VIP Points period, although it is possible that some of the new sets will be on backorder by then. So if you really want something fast, you might want to get it now, and just wait to place a larger order until the Double VIP Points period kicks in. Also, don’t forget that LEGO is running a clearance sale at the same time on some really nice older sets, so before you check out visit the Sales and Deals section of the Online LEGO Shop.

Alternate color LEGO Star Wars sets & more

Building official LEGO sets is definitely fun, and also a great way to learn interesting building techniques. If you would like to branch out to building your own LEGO models, one of the easiest ways to start is to simply modify official LEGO sets. This can include adding additional details and accessories, or if you want to get more adventurous, you can recolor the models. Recoloring can be used for structures (we have discussed recoloring the LEGO Modular Buildings – see link at the end of this post), and it works particularly well for vehicles. LEGO City cars, race cars, spaceships, and other vehicles can all get a fresh new look by just changing the color-scheme. And you can also expand your collection of a particular vehicle you really like. 🙂

LEGO Star Wars Alternate Colors by Rebel Builder

Today I would like to introduce you to a LEGO fan who specializes in recolororing official LEGO Star Wars sets and other LEGO Space sets. He goes by the name Rebel Builder, with a YouTube channel of the same name. Rebel Builder sometimes reviews official LEGO sets, but his main focus is on customizing them. For example he rebuilt the LEGO Star Wars Jedi Interceptor in seven different colors, including orange, black, dark-blue, various shades of green, and even purple.

Videos of the recolored vehicles are excellent quality, and Rebel Builder also discusses the challenges of picking alternate colors and finding the necessary pieces (not all LEGO elements come in all colors). If you ever wonder what a particular vehicle would look like in another color-scheme that you might want to build, watching these videos gives you a good idea. Below is a play-list of some of the alternate builds.

Another way you can play with colors is to first build the original vehicle in LEGO Digital Designer, and then start changing the colors to see what would look best. This way you don’t have to buy a bunch of pieces before committing to a particular color-scheme. I’m currently doing this with the #7593 LEGO Toy Story Buzz’s Star Command Spaceship. It is actually a really nice little spaceship with opening cockpit and a cargo-bay at the back, but the colors are kind of wacky. I have changed the colors to make it more respectable looking for my astronauts, and I’m just now getting the parts to actually build it.

Other vehicles that look excellent with alternate colors are LEGO race cars. For example if you really like one of the LEGO Speed Champions vehicles, and would like to build more of them to create a collection, you can simply change some or all of its colors. Even something simple as Emmet’s compact little vehicle can be recreated in other colors, as we have seen The LEGO Movie – they look fun all lined up.

LEGO Speed Champions Review

So, if you would like to create alternate versions of LEGO Star Wars or other LEGO Space sets, I would recommend you check out Rebel Builder’s YouTube channel for inspiration and ideas. And if you would like to work on other vehicles in LEGO Digital Designer, you can find PDF files of a very large number of official LEGO sets at this forum at EuroBricks.com. This way you don’t have to rebuild the sets in LDD before you start recoloring them. Once you are happy with your design, you can get a shopping-list of your recolored model, and hit BrickLink.com, or the official LEGO Pick-A-Brick store or LEGO Bricks & Pieces store.

So what do you think? Have you ever rebuilt any official LEGO vehicles in other colors? Which ones? Or have you considered it? Which LEGO Star Wars recolors we featured here do you like the most? Feel free to share in the comment section below! 😉
