Fun LEGO contest: build a LEGO lab!

There is an interesting contest for LEGO fans run by a company based in the UK called Radleys. They make scientific glassware and laboratory instruments for industrial and academic research facilities around the world. The contest is about building a LEGO lab, it is for three age levels, open to contestants from all countries, and the grand prize is a £150 LEGO voucher. Details below. 🙂

BUILD A LEGO LAB CONTEST – AGE LEVELS: The competition is open to, and will be judged in, three separate age levels. LEVEL 1 – 10 years old and younger, LEVEL 2 – Ages 11-16, and LEVEL 3 – Over 16. (Below are pictures of the 2015 winning entries from the three levels.)

BUILD A LEGO LAB CONTEST – DETAILS: Your creation can be as big or as small as you like, but it must be built entirely out of LEGO. How you interpret this challenge is up to you, but if you really want to impress the judges, you might consider building a real laboratory filled with real scientists (I copied this tip from their website, so it’s worth paying attention, if you want an edge in the contest). Once you’ve built your laboratory, send in your photos from as many angles as possible, or better yet, record a video. Also include a description about the sort of experiments your mad scientists are conducting. The judges favorite entries will be shared in an online photo gallery, and the craziest laboratory from each category will win £150 of LEGO!

BUILD A LEGO LAB CONTEST – HOW TO ENTER: Send an email to competition@radleys.co.uk, with the subject line “Radleys LEGO Competition”. In your email include the following information: 1.) your name, 2.) your age, 3.) your entry level, 4.) a description of your model and 5.) between 3-10 photos of your project, and if possible, a video.

BUILD A LEGO LAB CONTEST – TIMELINE: The contest closes on the 1st of September 2016, and the winner from each category will be announced on the 9th of September 2016. Radleys is not responsible for lost, late, illegible, or incomplete entries, or those not received for any reason. Winners will be notified by email. If the promoter is not able to get in contact with the winner by December 31st 2016, the prize will be forfeited and an alternative winner will be drawn. It is the winner’s responsibility to notify the promoter of any change in contact information.

BUILD A LEGO LAB CONTEST – RULES: 1.) Entry must be your own creation, and not a LEGO designed kit, or a project found online, or in a magazine. 2.) Entrant warrants that the entry is original and does not infringe the intellectual property rights of any third party, has not been published in any medium, and has not won and previous awards or competitions. 3.) Only physical builds are accepted – no digital entries. 4.) Limit of one entry per email account. 5.) Acceptable file formats for your photo are .jpg and .png, with file sizes no larger than 10MB. 6.) The photo should only include the project, and should not include the entrant or any other individuals. 7.) Though this competition is open internationally, entries must be written in English. 8.) Parents and guardians are to submit on behalf of children aged 13 and below. Radleys reserves the right to disqualify entries from children aged 13 and below that are not submitted by a parent or guardian. (See detailed rules here.)

BUILD A LEGO LAB CONTEST – PRIZE: Entries will be judged on creativity and originality, with one winner chosen from each level. Incomplete and/or inaccurate entries, and entries not complying with all rules, are subject for disqualification. Decisions of judges are final and binding. Winners from each level who live in a country with a LEGO brand store will receive a £150 eVoucher redeemable on lego.com/[their country]. If the winner lives in a country that does not have a brand store, they will be able to select a prize of their choice from lego.com, equivalent to the value of the voucher in their own currency, which Radleys will ship to them. (Countries with a LEGO brand store: UK, Canada, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, and the USA). The prize does not have a cash value, is non-negotiable, non-transferrable, and non-refundable.

Interesting isn’t it? I particularly like that the contest is open to three separate age-groups, so young kids, teens and adults can all participate, and their creations will be judged separately. If you would like to participate, but need a bit of inspiration, you can take a look at the entries and the winners from last year’s competition at the following links: LEVEL 1 – Entries & Winner 2015, LEVEL 2 – Entries & Winner 2015, LEVEL 3 – Entries & Winner 2015.

So what do you think? How do you like this LEGO contest? Are you planning to enter? Do you have any ideas already on what you are going to build? Feel free to share in the comment section below! 😉

Back to school with LEGO desk supplies!

(Written by Geneva – gid617)

A little while ago LEGO released an interesting collection of brick-themed desk supplies. You can read a general review on them here: LEGO Stationery: Ruler, Pens, Markers & More! Since then I got the chance to try them out myself, and I have been playing around with them quite a bit. Below are some of my experiments. 🙂

LEGO Desk Supplies 1

The LEGO pens and markers are all perfectly good quality and write very well. At first I thought a square pen would be something of a pain to use, but in fact the squareness is hardly noticeable. The rectangular markers, however, are a little less cute and more plain. My sister has been using one of the pens, so I asked her for her opinion. She told me that it worked well, once she took the top off. 🙄

I took advantage of the buildability of these pens and markers to achieve some interesting lines. As you can attach the pens to each other, they are great for using two or more pens at once. Below are some examples.

Although the pencils, erasers, and sharpeners are sold in kits of their own, they work well together. The LEGO pencil includes a clip that allows the pencil to attach to a LEGO brick, but unfortunately it is not the right size for any other LEGO element. The cute eraser got a 2×2 round brick in the middle. And the pencil sharpener comes with a really neat transparent 2×4 tile that has the LEGO logo engraved on it. They all have standard LEGO brick connections and can be put to some pretty unique uses. I may have gone a bit over the top though; that spaceship gets heavy after a while! 😀

However the star of the whole range of these LEGO desk supplies has to be the ruler. It really looks great, and what’s more, it is completely LEGO! The ruler tiles are printed; with metric on one side and imperial on the other. The ruler is built in such a way that it can either be lengthened to 12 inches (30 centimeters), or shortened to 6 inches (15 centimeters). This is a great way to take advantage of the LEGO construction system.

And there is also a pencil box to store everything. It is a fairly plain white container, with a 2×4 plate embedded on top. Inside is a normal green 8×26 LEGO baseplate, which pops out very easily. I have passed the pencil box on to my sister, who complimented it by saying that it was “as useful as any other box”. The pens, pencils, markers, eraser and sharpener attach to the baseplate to eliminate loose pieces and conserve space. It also allows you to spiff up the box a bit with a custom design, like I did below.

There are a few other products in the LEGO stationary and desk supplies line which I don’t have, but you can check them out all here: LEGO STATIONERY COLLECTION ON AMAZON

On the whole, this is a good quality product line with several cute offers, which take advantage of the interlocking capacity of LEGO bricks in a very unique way. They would make great gifts and are a good way to show off your LEGO hobby. What do you think? Have you picked up any of these LEGO desk supplies already? Or are you planning to? Do you find them useful? Feel free to share your own review in the comment section below! 😉
