The LEGO Jurassic World sets became available at the beginning of this month, so let’s take a closer look at these interesting new sets. The most exciting feature of the LEGO Jurassic World line is of course the dinos, however there are also some other aspects that are worth to take a look at. Below you will find details on each of the LEGO Jurassic Word sets as well as full video-reviews. The Jurassic World film won’t be out until mid-June, but LEGO fans can already play out all the action! 🙂

LEGO Jurassic World

#75915 LEGO JURASSIC WORLD PTERANODON CAPTURE: This is the smallest of the LEGO Jurassic World sets with some interesting features on the helicopter. Fire the net shooter to take down the pteranodon! Emergency! A pteranodon has grabbed an ACU trooper and is flying away with him gripped in its claws. Jump into the cockpit of the cool Jurassic One helicopter with Simon Masrani, soar into the sky and speed to the rescue. When you have the pteranodon in your sights, open the side door to hang out on the platform and fire the net shooter to capture the dinosaur before it can escape. Includes 2 minifigures: Simon Masrani and an ACU trooper with a weapon. 174 pieces. Price: $19.99 – BUY HERE

#75915 LEGO Jurassic World

#75916 LEGO JURASSIC WORLD DILOPHOSAURUS: At least to me, this is one of the most interesting sets in the series because of that gyrosphere. As you can see it in the video-review below, the seat stays upright while you move the gyrosphere. I hope LEGO is going to use this mechanism in future sets as well. The dino is also pretty awesome with some really nice print. Save Gray from the dilophosaurus with the Jurassic World 4×4! Danger! Gray has got lost in the park and is rolling around in a gyrosphere being chased by a dilophosaurus. Join the ACU trooper as he drives to the rescue in the classic Jurassic World 4×4. Use the binoculars to seek out the ferocious dinosaur and call for back-up on the walkie-talkie. Evade its snapping jaws and use the winch to grab its legs. Take down that dino before it can jump on the back of the 4×4 and activate the explode function! Includes 2 minifigures with a weapon and assorted accessories: Gray and an ACU trooper. 248 pieces. Price: $29.99 – BUY HERE

#75916 LEGO Jurassic World

#75917 LEGO JURASSIC WORLD RAPTOR RAMPAGE: This is one of my favorite sets in the series because of all the action, the play-features and two dinos! As far as play-value, I think this is one of the best. Fend off raptor attacks on the mobile vet unit! Watch out! The mobile vet unit is under attack from Blue and Charlie, two marauding raptors. Drive the powerful vehicle at top speed to evade their charges. Join Owen on the motorbike to distract the dinosaurs and lure them away with the flare. Fire the rotating rooftop shooter to repel the raptors and put them to sleep with the ACU trooper’s tranquilizer gun. Includes 3 minifigures with a weapon and assorted accessories: an ACU trooper, Owen and Claire. 324 pieces. Price: $49.99 – BUY HERE

#75917 LEGO Jurassic World

#75918 LEGO JURASSIC WORLD T. REX TRACKER: This set comes with the largest dino in the series, which definitely shows in the very steep price. I think there are other sets in the line that are much more versatile and fun with a better price, but if you want the have the biggest, baddest dino, you might still consider it. Check out the play-features in the video-review below. Take down the T. rex with the trap shooter! The chase is on! A mighty T. rex has broken loose and it must be captured before it harms anyone. Team up with the ACU troopers in the T. rex Tracker to pursue the ferocious creature. Drive the motorcycle to distract the T. rex, swerving clear of its powerful jaws. Meanwhile, lay out the dino cage as a trap and prepare to fire the mobile research module’s harpoon-style trap shooter. You’ve only got one shot to take down the beast, so make it count! Includes 3 minifigures with assorted weapons and accessories: an ACU trooper, Hoskins and a vet. 520 pieces. Price: $69.99 – BUY HERE

#75918 LEGO Jurassic World

#75919 LEGO JURASSIC WORLD INDOMINUS REX BREAKOUT: This is the largest set in the series and includes some of the best features this theme has to offer. There is the whole structure in itself, which looks great, and you also get a small helicopter, another gyrosphere, and four minifigs. I wish it would come with another dino though. Direct the Indominus rex back to the impound! Red alert – the huge Indominus rex has broken out of the impound! Zach is inside the gyrosphere launched from the pen wall and now he’s under attack. Direct the hunt for the rampaging beast from the impound’s research tower. Set off in hot pursuit in the helicopter, evading the dinosaur’s snapping jaws and swiping claws. You must get that dangerous dino safely back in the pen before it causes serious damage. Includes 4 minifigures with assorted weapons and accessories: Zach, an ACU trooper, Dr Wu and a vet. 1156 pieces. Price: $129.99 – BUY HERE

#75919 LEGO Jurassic World

#75920 LEGO JURASSIC WORLD RAPTOR ESCAPE: This is my second favorite set in the series because of the two dinos and plenty of play-features. Uh-oh – there’s double dino trouble in Jurassic World! One of the raptors has escaped its pen and is running loose. Jump into the high-speed offroader and set off in hot pursuit. Fire the flick shooter and use Barry’s tranquilizer gun to tame the menacing marauder. Meanwhile, the other raptor has triggered the trap function to bring the vet toppling down into its pen. Rush back to save him before the raptor can grab him in its snapping jaws. Includes 2 minifigures with assorted weapons: Barry and a vet. 394 pieces. Price: $39.99 – BUY HERE

#75920 LEGO Jurassic World

In the video-player below you can watch the review of all of the LEGO Jurassic World sets by JANGBRiCKS and the BrickShow. I put them in order of set-numbers, but if you only want to watch a specific review, you can use the drop-down menu in the upper left corner of the video-player.

As you can see, the LEGO Jurassic World theme captures the action of the film really well. And the dinos are awesome looking. I don’t particularly like the blue and white color-scheme, but if that’s how they look like in the movie, there is not much LEGO can do about that. One issue with these sets is the higher than normal price due to the special moulds for the dinos. So if you are considering getting these sets you may have to pay more attention which sets gives you the best features, elements, minifigs and dinos for your money. Personally I like the #75917 LEGO Jurassic World Raptor Rampage and the #75920 LEGO Jurassic World Raptor Escape. Those two sets alone give you four dinos and plenty of play-value. And I also like the #75916 LEGO Jurassic World Dilophosaurus Ambush because of the gyrosphere and the very unique dino. But if you are after the largest dinos, you might want to look at the two biggest sets. All of the LEGO Jurassic World sets are now available both on Amazon.com (follow the link) and at the Online LEGO Shop.

In this Brick Breakdown series I review official LEGO sets, from the perspective of looking at interesting building techniques we can all learn from. Today we will be looking at the #70411 LEGO Pirates Treasure Island. You can also check out the previously discussed LEGO techniques found in official LEGO sets at the end of this article. 🙂

#70411 LEGO Pirates

As you know, LEGO Pirates are back this year. As the movie license of Pirates of the Caribbean is now over, there is no competition for the high seas. This means we’re back to the original LEGO Pirates, with simpler designs, but more freedom in what can be created. Since this is essentially a re-launch of LEGO Pirates, it was necessary to reestablish the two sides of the conflict. This is done with some fairly basic, tried and true designs; the soldiers get their various fort/outpost bases and the pirates get wrecked islands and a cool ship. So now let’s find out what valuable techniques are buried on Treasure Island…

NOVEL PULLEY USE WITH LEGO

Often when you see a LEGO pulley design it is used in a very functional way; basically to lift things up – like a crane in a LEGO City set, or for closing a LEGO Castle gate. In the #70411 LEGO Pirates Treasure Island there are some minor twists to the pulley. First, the pulley is hidden behind tree leaves and is threaded among one of the pieces on the rocky outcrop. This makes the chain the pulley uses only partially visible – which differs from most pulley designs where you can see the full pulley action.

The next major difference is that when the pulley mechanism is activated, it pulls on a fixed object. The skull wall features a hinge that prevents the wall from leaving its position. The end result is a very specific redirection of how the pulley’s force is applied. In this case, the skull lifts like a hidden passageway. With all the decorations it can be easy to miss this simple yet very clever and effective technique. If you control an object’s movement with things like hinges, then the standard use of a pulley will change its effect. The real task will be figuring out the right placement to anchor the pulley and position the hinge.

➡ DECORATIVE & FUNCTIONAL WALLS WITH LEGO

I would like to begin by saying that you can make these types of walls in any thickness with a variety of styles. The one style I am going to cover is probably the most common and is what is featured in this LEGO Pirates set. I would encourage builders to only view this technique as a starting point and explore more complex designs using the principles found here. In the #70411 LEGO Pirates Treasure Island set a wall that is both decorative and functional is the skull wall section; it has a clear decorative look and it is used as a hidden passageway.

So let’s look at its basic principles applied here. For starters, the wall is two studs thick. This is very important because each row can be dedicated to a different facet of the wall’s construction. In this example, one of the stud rows is all about forming the skull with slopes and shaped elements. The second row is used for solidifying the wall by making it stable and features the hinge that gives it its functional aspect. This represents a clear separation of the two main qualities we are looking for in something that is both decorative and functional. I recommend anyone attempting this type of design to start with a two stud thick wall. It is easy to keep things in their proper place and it doesn’t take up a whole lot of space.

APPLYING WHAT YOU LEARN

The novel use of the pulley seen in #70411 LEGO Pirates Treasure Island set is just one example of how you can alter a simple mechanism. Often by adding your own restrictions to a device, you can dramatically change what the device is capable of accomplishing. Consider any LEGO model you designed with an action element. Then think of ways you can change that action with a hinge or additional mechanisms.

As mentioned in the section about decorative and functional walls, the style described is only the simplest one to understand. You could build the wall sideways to add new complications, or make the wall thinner by using plates in a sideways fashion. You can even go the other direction and add more stud rows because you may want the middle to be functional and the opposite sides to be decorative. Your options will dramatically expand with just a little experimentation. For the LEGO Pirates sets see the Online LEGO Shop.
