Designing a LEGO Technic Volvo model

You might remember the recent review of the #42030 LEGO Technic Remote-Controlled Volvo L350F Wheel Loader by one of our regular readers (see: LEGO Technic Volvo Wheel Loader Highlights). Since then we have been contacted by Volvo’s marketing department and they have sent some additional information about the collaboration between Volvo and LEGO, including a very interesting video. Check it out below! 🙂

LEGO Technic Volvo Video

You have probably seen on TV how they make mega factories and gigantic machines and in the following video you can watch how LEGO Technic shrank a giant Volvo L350F Wheel Loader into a miniature model. The film follows the development team behind LEGO Technic’s biggest machine for 2014 – from both LEGO and Volvo – charting their passion for getting their latest model as close a representation of the real machine as possible. It also follows LEGO Technic’s Niels Henrik Horsted, head of marketing and design manager Jeppe Juul Jensen as they conduct hands-on research, visiting the Volvo factory and a construction site and operating a L350F themselves. The real version of the alternate model of the LEGO set – the Volvo A25F Articulated Hauler – is also visible in the video.

That looked like a fun, isn’t it? Especially driving those big machines around! With 1,636 individual pieces and the largest individual element ever created for the brand (the giant bucket at the front), the remote-controlled LEGO Technic Volvo L350F Wheel Loader can lift more than 1kg in its bucket and drive over challenging terrain day in, day out – just like the real thing. “We tried to make it as realistic as possible, so it drives, steers and lifts the load just like the real thing,” says Jensen. “You can also remove the oil filters, the radiator-door swings out, pistons move and the engine is painted green, just like in the real thing.” Here are some additional specs on the LEGO versions of these giant machines:

  • Features a detailed 6-cylinder Volvo-green engine with moving pistons and fan, articulated servo steering, working lift arm, and a massive, tipping bucket
  • Activate the double remote-controlled LEGO Power Functions motors for powerful, simultaneous driving and digging action – just like the real machine!
  • Includes the following LEGO Power Functions components: a servo motor, an XL-motor, a large motor, a medium motor, a battery box, 2 remote controls and 2 infrared receivers
  • Bucket reaches over 14” (38cm) into the air!
  • 2-in-1 model: rebuilds into a Volvo A25F articulated hauler
  • Volvo L350F (with bucket lowered) measures over 9” (23cm) high, 22” (58cm) long and 6” (16cm) wide
  • Volvo A25F measures over 9” (23cm) high, 19” (50cm) long and 6” (17cm) wide

2015 LEGO exclusive sets rumors…

We have been discussing many of the 2015 LEGO sets coming next year (see links at the end of this post), and it is exciting to see such a nice line-up from our favorite themes. Although they haven’t been announced officially as of yet, the set pictures, minifigs and some of the details are already available. Unless some major disaster or something happens, you can count on that these sets will be available in January. 🙂

LEGO 2015 Exclusive Sets Rumors

Besides the solid information about the regular LEGO sets there are also rumors circulating about some large exclusive sets coming later in 2015. I normally don’t like to post rumors until there is at least some solid information, however at this time I will make an exception as readers have been consistently asking about these both by email and in the comment section of various articles. So I decided to collect and address these rumors in one post, thus we can discuss them all in one place.

Please note that these are rumors. They do come from fairly reliable sources – in other words they come from people who won’t intentionally spread misinformation. However keep in mind that many times in the past such rumors ended up being either completely or at least partially wrong. This may have been the result of miscommunication, misinterpreted information, or LEGO’s own changing plans. The bottom line is; take everything you read here with a grain of salt. So now that we have that cleared, let’s talk about the three large exclusive LEGO sets coming next year.

LEGO MARVEL SUPER HEROES – AVENGERS HELICARRIER: This rumor was first posted by LEGO blogger Allen from TheBrickFan.com. According to his source, this is going to be a very large, Ultimate Collector Series type set with around 3,000 pieces, for about $300, released next summer. LEGO DC Comics has recently gotten the #76023 LEGO Super Heroes Tumbler, which has close to 2,000 pieces with the price of $200. So from this perspective it does seem plausible that Marvel also gets a large LEGO set. Other that this information, nothing else is known. Below is a LEGO Avengers Helicarrier model by YoSub Joo that recently made it to 10,000 votes on LEGO Ideas. Please note this is NOT an indication of what the rumored set will be like – after all this model is over 22,000 pieces! I simply put it here for your reference and because it is awesome! 😀

LEGO STAR WARS UCS TIE FIGHTER: I believe this rumor started by a member of Brickset in this thread, and later confirmed by other reliable sources as well. LEGO normally releases a LEGO Star Wars UCS set on May the 4th (which is traditionally Star Wars Day), so that part checks out. We have already gotten the #7181 LEGO Star Wars TIE Interceptor in the year 2000, and the #10175 LEGO Star Wars Vader’s TIE Advanced in 2006, so there is some precedent that LEGO likes to make TIE variants in the Ultimate Collector Series. This set supposed to be around $200 with 1,600 pieces. The currently available LEGO Star Wars UCS sets are the #10225 LEGO Star Wars R2-D2 model, the #10240 LEGO Star Wars Red Five X-wing, the #75059 LEGO Star Wars Sandcrawler, and the #75060 LEGO Star Wars Slave I will be released in January.

LEGO THE SIMPSONS KWIK-E-MART: This rumor also started by Allen from TheBrickFan.com. According to his source it will be somewhat cheaper than the currently available #71006 LEGO The Simpsons House set (which is an excellent set, by the way, but it is $200). Although this is only a rumor at this point, there is a good possibility of it happening as we already know that a second wave of LEGO The Simpsons Collectible Minifigures are scheduled for next year.

So these are the three large exclusive LEGO sets rumored to be released next year. Again, take this all with a grain or even teaspoon of salt. However now you know what’s circulating out there, and we have one place to discuss any updates on these sets. There is also a video round-up about the above news from just2good. I believe his reasoning is quite circular in trying to prove that the rumors are in fact true, but he can be forgiven; LEGO fans are an enthusiastic bunch, and we love to believe good rumors on rare and expensive sets. Hope he ends up being right. And for currently available LEGO exclusives you can check out the Online LEGO Shop.

What do you think? Any of these rumors sound plausible to you? Feel free to share and discuss in the comment section below, and if you hear any updates you can post them here as well. 😉
