Revised & Recolored LEGO Sets Coming!

I was reading an interesting piece of news this past weekend on Brickset. Apparently, several sets that were released within the past few years will be available in revised versions. The selection seems rather random, and I’m not really sure what to think, but I have included the information below so we can discuss.

The #31058 LEGO Creator Mighty Dinosaurs was a 3-in-1 set released in 2017, featuring a green dino that could be rebuilt into a triceratops or a pterodactyl. As you can see on the images below, this set is going to be released in two re-colored versions; the #77940 LEGO Creator Mighty Dinosaurs with a brown dino, and the #77941 LEGO Creator Mighty Dinosaurs with a dark-blue dino. Dinos are popular with kids, so it’s understandable that LEGO decided the set back, but it is not know why the change of colors, and why the two different colors. Nor is it known if this is going to be a wide release, something regional, or perhaps event-specific, but you can keep an eye on it at the LEGO Creator section of the Online LEGO Shop.

The pretty light-yellow #10271 LEGO Creator Expert Fiat 500 was released in 2020, and this year, we should be getting a light-blue version in the #77942 LEGO Creator Expert Fiat 500. As far as I can tell, nothing else is different besides the color. The first version is available at the LEGO Creator Expert section of the Online LEGO Shop. We don’t know yet when and where the second version will be released.

The third re-release listed by Brickset is a little different as it more than just a change of colors. The #60110 LEGO City Fire Station was released back in 2016, and although the upcoming #77944 LEGO City Fire Station is very similar, it does include some minor changes in the set design, minifigs, and box-art. Again, it’s not know when and where this set will be available, but you can look for it at the LEGO City section of the Online LEGO Shop.

It’s interesting to note that although in the past LEGO was very much against re-releases, it seems that their stance on this softened in recent years. An identical version of the #10189 LEGO Creator Expert Taj Mahal from 2008 was released as the #10256 LEGO Creator Expert Taj Mahal in 2017. Although both sets are now retired, a smaller version, the #21056 LEGO Architecture Taj Mahal, is available at the LEGO Architecture section of the Online LEGO Shop.

Another identical re-release is the #92176 LEGO Creator Expert NASA Apollo Saturn V from 2020, which first appeared as the #21309 LEGO Creator Expert NASA Apollo Saturn V in 2017. The new version is available at the LEGO Creator Expert section of the Online LEGO Shop.

I can understand the re-release of larger collector sets, I’m a bit puzzled by the re-appearance of the smaller sets. I’m unsure about why LEGO felt it was necessary to re-release the dinos and to change the colors, or what is the purpose of re-releasing an almost identical fire station. What do you think? What sets would you like to see re-released? And what do you think of the ones we discussed here? If you have some thoughts or insights, feel free to share in the comment section below!

2021 LEGO Advent Calendars Overview

Although the LEGO Advent Calendars for this year won’t be available until next month, I did want to talk about them a bit to help you decide which one to get. Up to 2012, we only got a couple of LEGO Advent Calendars per year, which gradually progressed to three, and four per year, and this is the first year we get five, so there is something for everyone!

As usual, each LEGO Advent Calendar Box contains 24 little doors, with a small packet of LEGO pieces and/or figures that kids can build that day. And the packaging also folds out to reveal a nicely designed playmat for play and display. It’s a fun way to count down to Christmas.

The #41690 LEGO Friends Advent Calendar is particularly cute this year, as it features five of the recently introduced micro-dolls as well as various small gifts and toys that match their size. This set costs $29.99 and is going to be available starting in September at the LEGO Friends section of the Online LEGO Shop.

The #60303 LEGO City Advent Calendar is also a bit different this year, as instead of just some generic LEGO City characters, it includes six named characters from the LEGO City Adventures TV series; Top Hat Tom, Bob, Betty, Sam Grizzled, Shirley Keeper and Fendrich, plus a buildable Duke DeTain snowman. This set is also $29.99 and is going to be available at the LEGO City section of the Online LEGO Shop.

The #75307 LEGO LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar is usually one of the most desirable ones due to the exclusive minifigs and micro-builds of popular Star Wars ships. And this year’s Advent Calendar is special because it exclusively focuses on Star Wars: The Mandalorian Season 2 live action television series. First of all, we are getting seven figures/droids; The Mandalorian and the Child (Grogu), affectionately known as Baby Yoda, both in festive outfits, plus a Scout Trooper, Stormtrooper, Tusken Raider, IG-11, and IT-O Interrogator Droid. In addition, we arel also getting eleven mini-build vehicles include The Razor Crest, Riot Mar’s starfighter, Imperial Troop Transport, X-wing, TIE Fighter, Imperial Light Cruiser, Boba Fett’s starship, and the Child’s hoverpram. Other mini-builds include an E-web heavy blaster snow launcher, training targets, Tusken Raider’s weapon rack and snow launcher, Imperial weapon rack, and Mandalorian weapon rack. This set is $39.99, and will be available at the LEGO Star Wars section of the Online LEGO Shop.

The #76196 LEGO Avengers Advent Calendar is a completely new this year, adding the Marvel Universe to the LEGO Advent Calendar Collection. The set features seven minifigures; Iron Man (in Christmas sweater), Spider-Man, Black Widow, Thor, Captain Marvel, Thanos, and Nick Fury, as well as mini versions of the Quinjet, Helicarrier, Spider-Man drone, Avengers Tower, and more. I think this set might just be as popular as the Star Wars one. This set is also $39.99, and you can find it at the LEGO Marvel Super Heroes section of the Online LEGO Shop.

The #76390 LEGO Harry Potter Advent Calendar is also going to be a popular one. The six minifigs are Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, Draco Malfoy, Dudley Dursley, and Griphook, but unfortunately none of them wear Christmas outfits. However, there are some other enchanting accessories from the Harry Potter movies, like the Hogwarts letters arriving through the fireplace, collecting gold from Gringotts’ vault, picking up Harry’s school supplies, and meeting Hedwig the owl. A colorful spinner unlocks even more excitement with a fun game. The set also features a couple of random collectible Wizard Card tiles that we talked about the other day. This set is also $39.99 and will be available next month at the LEGO Harry Potter section of the Online LEGO Shop.

As you can see, there are plenty of LEGO Advent Calendars to choose from this year. I’m definitely planning to get the LEGO Friends Advent Calendar as I love those micro-dolls. And speaking if micro-dolls, I also want to get Baby Yoda in a Christmas sweater! What about you? Which LEGO Advent Calendar would you like to get this year? Feel free to share your thoughts and discuss in the comment section below!
