2020 LEGO Friends Play Cubes Review

There are several January 2020 LEGO sets that come in some type of plastic encasing. This includes the five LEGO Friends Play Cubes, the four LEGO Disney Storybook Adventures, and the three LEGO Ninjago Arcade Pods. I’m very fond of small LEGO sets in durable plastic boxes, so as soon I can get my hands on them, I plan to review them all. Today, we will start with the LEGO Friends Play Cubes, as LEGO was kind enough to send us some samples. Let’s take a look.

The LEGO Friends Play Cubes come in a sturdy cardboard casing, with the translucent-glittery-purple side of the cube peaking out. As you will notice in the upper right corner of the packaging, this is Series #1 of the LEGO Friends Play Cubes, so we can expect to see more in the future. Also on the front of the box, it mentions that there is a surprise pet inside each of the sets as well as some stickers. You can see some of the possible pets at the edges of the box; birds, puppies, kitties, bunnies, and hamsters in unusual colors like dark-azure, hot-pink, light-purple, and gold. I would have preferred pets in more realistic colors, but they could still be used for a toy store in your LEGO city or something similar.

The play cube itself is somewhat larger than the previously released round pods. And they have different attachment points. Inside the pods, there is a 6×6 round plate glued in on one side for small dioramas, and there is a 1×2 plate on the other side to hold a minifig. There are no attachment points on the outside. The pods provided a nice way to carry a small number of pieces, or arrange a small scene, but other than that, they didn’t have much use.

The play cubes are a lot more versatile, and could be incorporated in the LEGO building system in a number of ways. They have 8 tubes at the bottom so you can attach them upright on top of studs (the distance is 6 studs), and they have eight open studs on top with even more possibilities. The cubes close by two standard studs. And inside the cubes, there are 4 rectangular tubes for receiving studs, and 4 open studs. All these attachment points make the cubes useful as building pieces, and due to the larger space and secure closure, they could also be used as storage/carry containers for special pieces.

The one thing I don’t like about the cubes is that the hinge feels flimsy compared to the hinge of the pods. I was never worried about the pods breaking as the plastic, the hinge, and the closure are very sturdy. However, it seems to me that there is a chance the cubes could crack near the hinge. Time will tell.

Inside the packaging, you will find a clear bag with most of the pieces, folded up instructions, and a sticker-sheet. Inside the pod, you will find a packet with a mystery pet, some more pieces, and a folded up insert. The inserts shows that the pets are not so random after all. In the #41400 LEGO Friends Play Cube, you will get a bird in four possible colors. In the #41401 LEGO Friends Play Cube, you will get a puppy in the same four possible colors. The #41402 LEGO Friends Cube comes with a hamster, the #41403 LEGO Friends Play Cube with a bunny, and the #41404 LEGO Friends Play Cube with a kitten (all in four possible colors).

The insert also shows Series #2 of the LEGO Friends Play Cubes with a translucent-glittery-pink lid (the set numbers are #41405, #41406, #41407, #41408, and #41409). Based on the colors of the backside of the pods in Series 2, it seems that they will also include Andrea, Stephanie, Olivia, Mia, and Emma, probably with different accessories.

Once you fold out the instructions page, you will find an image of the particular cube you’re about to build, and images of some of the other 2020 LEGO Friends sets. The other side of the instructions page shows how to build the little scene you can put inside the two halves of the cube.

The most unusual pieces in the set are the two 2×6 brackets. They form the base for the two little scenes, and the studs on the side allow you to attach them to the back of the cubes. Each of the cubes comes with two of these pieces in different colors. Other pieces include lots of decorative elements and accessories, based on the favorite activities of each of the friends; music for Andrea, cooking for Stephanie, scientific instruments for Olivia, vet accessories for Mia, and photography equipment for Emma. Even after you build each scene as shown in the instructions, you will have plenty of extra pieces left. In addition, you can further decorate each cube with the included stickers.

It looks like LEGO is going to give us lots of little pods, cubes, and magic books this year. I personally like them as they are made of ABS plastic, and they can be incorporated into a LEGO build, or used for storage and as a carry case. The LEGO Friends Play Cubes area a great way to get extra characters and tons of accessories, and the cube is reusable as well.

Also notice something very cool; as demonstrated on the LEGO Friends Play Cube packages and inserts, the cubes can be attached to each other and stacked up in various configurations to make a minifig display wall. You could keep the cubes in a permanently open position, and use each half for displaying minifigs or even a small diorama. Or, you could attach just the back of the cubes to a frame and keep the doors open-able.

Another possibility I thought of is attaching the cubes to each other while lying down, and using them for parts storage. The clutch-power of the studs is strong, so the cubes won’t fall apart.

On the negative side, I’m a bit concerned about the durability of the cube’s hinge, and I would have preferred pets in “normal” colors. Also, compared to the previously released pods with their awesome holographic images at the front, the cubes are pretty plain looking from the outside. Probably this is why LEGO made the cover translucent and glittery, but it’s not as cool as the pods. All in all, I like the cubes, and will probably collect them all.

If you are interested, all five of the Series #1 LEGO Friends Play Cubes are available from January 1st, at the LEGO Friends section of the Online LEGO Shop.

What do you think? How do you like the LEGO Friends Play Cubes? Are you planning to get any of them? Or even collect them all? And what do you think about the possibility of using them for display or storage? Feel free to share your thoughts and discuss in the comment section below!

2020 LEGO BrickHeadz Sets Review

Although LEGO no longer releases as many LEGO BrickHeadz sets as they did a couple of years ago, the theme is still well and alive, mainly focusing on blocky brick-built characters for holidays and special occasions. Early 2020, we are getting five LEGO BrickHeadz sets, which is what we’re going to talk about today.

#40436 LEGO BRICKHEADZ LUCKY CAT: The maneki-neko (Japanese for “beckoning cat”) is a commonly seen Japanese figurine which is often believed to bring good luck to the owner. The figurine depicts a cat beckoning with an upright paw, and is usually displayed at the entrance of shops, restaurants, and other businesses. In addition, the beckoning cat can be found as keychains, piggy banks, and other accessories. Because the figurine is also popular with Chinese merchants, it is also referred to as the “Chinese lucky cat”. (Click images for larger view.)

According to the set description, the LEGO BrickHeadz Lucky Cat celebrates the Chinese New Year. The #96 on the box indicates that this is the 96th LEGO BrickHeadz character, which could be important to know for collectors. The cat has long whiskers, a cute pink nose, and a lever at the back to move the right paw up and down. The left paw holds a printed pearl-gold 1×2 tile with Chinese inscription. The cat sits on a 6×6 black base that has become standard for LEGO BrickHeadz sets, but it also has elaborate red and gold decorations on the sides. This is a cute set overall that would make a nice New Years gift. 134 pieces. Price: $9.99 – AVAILABLE JANUARY 1ST

#40379 LEGO BRICKHEADZ VALENTINE’S BEAR: Just like the cat, the bear is another sitting character on an elaborate base that is build in a similar fashion as the base of the cat. The base represents a picnic blanket spread out on the grass, and also includes a little brick-built bee, a honey jar, and colorful flowers and pink hearts. The bear holds a large red heart, which is a fairly new piece. The collectors’ number for this set is #97. Another cute gift item. 150 pieces. Price: $9.99 – AVAILABLE JANUARY 1ST

➡ #40380 LEGO BRICKHEADZ SHEEP: This set celebrates Easter, and will be available in February. The collectors’ number is 100. Again, we see the same type of extension to the standard LEGO BrickHeadz base, this time with a flower and a couple of painted Easter eggs. I quite like how the sheep’s wool is made with 1×1 round plates, and tiles, the cute nose, and curl of fur over its forehead. Also notice that the sheep is holding a paintbrush. No special elements here, but still adorable. I don’t know the piece-count for this set, but I assume it’s similar to the other two above. The price should be the same as well. – AVAILABLE IN FEBRUARY

Before talking about the next two sets, I just wanted to mention that my all-time favorite LEGO BrickHeadz set is the #41597 LEGO BrickHeadz Go Brick Me customization box from 2018. The set came with 708 pieces, decorative stickers, and an instruction book with base models to build, mix, and match all types of characters. You could build your friends, family, favorite characters, etc. It was basically a fun and creative educational kit on designing and building brick-built characters. Ever since the set was retired, I have been hoping for more sets like it, and the upcoming bride and groom sets are very similar.

#40383 LEGO BRICKHEADZ WEDDING BRIDE: As you can see on the box, this is a customization kit with at least fourteen different looks for the bride. The facial expression, hair, skin color, and accessories can all be customized. The set also comes with a special 1×4 printed piece that is part of the bride’s dress. The dress itself doesn’t have a whole lot of customization options besides changing out the color of the decorations at the front. Accessories include a pair of glasses, flowers, dress decorations, and a chrome-gold ring.

Both this set and the groom could make fun gifts for a couple about to get married, or could even be used as cake toppers. If you don’t know anyone who is about to get married, you can still used the sets similarly as the #41597 LEGO BrickHeadz Go Brick Me customization box, but you might want to switch out the parts of the dress. 306 pieces. Price: $12.99 – AVAILABLE JANUARY 1ST

#40384 LEGO BRICKHEADZ WEDDING GROOM: Here we got the smartly dressed groom to match the bride. Just like in the bride set, there are plenty of pieces to build at least eleven possible looks, including changing the facial expression, hair, and skin color. Accessories include a pair of glasses, pieces for a brick-built hat, suit decorations, and a chrome-gold ring. And there is also a special 1x2x2 printed brick for his suit. 255 pieces. Price $12.99 – AVAILABLE JANUARY 1ST

I like LEGO BrickHeadz because they are good for doodling while having a bit of a break from work, or when getting together with friends. They are easy to build once you get the hang of it, and it’s fun to make them look like someone you know. Thus, I prefer the free-building sets. And LEGO BrickHeadz also appeals to collectors who have been collecting all the brick-built version of super heroes, villains, and other movie and comics characters. If you like any of the new sets coming out in a few days, or you want to check out the current selection, visit the LEGO BrickHeadz section of the Online LEGO Shop.

What do you think? How do you like the LEGO BrickHeadz theme? Do you collect the characters, or do you prefer building your own? And what do you think of the 2020 LEGO BrickHeadz sets? Are you planning to get any of them? Feel free to share and discuss in the comment section below!
