Cars are back! To correspond with the upcoming Cars 3 film that is scheduled for release in mid-June of this year, LEGO recently added a series of LEGO Cars 3 sets to the LEGO Juniors and LEGO DUPLO lines. In addition, LEGO is also running a contest for teen and adult LEGO fans at their ReBrick website. So let’s talk about all of this. 🙂

LEGO JUNIORS CARS 3 SETS: While the previous LEGO Cars sets were released under their own sub-theme back in 2011 and 2012, this time the sets are under the LEGO Juniors line. This means that the sets are simpler builds, and all the decorated pieces are printed – both are good choices for the LEGO Cars collection. The seven sets already available are as follows: #10730 LEGO Juniors Lightning McQueen Speed Launcher, #10731 LEGO Juniors Cruz Ramirez Race Simulator, #10732 LEGO Juniors Guido and Luigi’s Pit Stop, #10733 LEGO Juniors Mater’s Junkyard, #10742 LEGO Juniors Willy’s Butte Speed Training, #10743 LEGO Juniors Smokey’s Garage, and #10744 LEGO Juniors Thunder Hollow Crazy 8 Race. And there will be one more set, the #10745 LEGO Juniors Florida 500 Race Final released sometime later. You can find all the currently available sets under the LEGO Juniors section of the Online LEGO Shop.

As you can see, three of the sets come with one car, two sets include two cars each, and the two largest sets have three and four cars. That’s a lot of very fun little vehicles. I particularly like Smokey’s garage, with two excellent looking classic cars, and of course Mater, Guido and Luigi are fan-favorites. And just look at all those gorgeous printed pieces! It’s worth getting the sets just for those! And the prices are not bad at all.

LEGO DUPLO CARS 3 SETS: Just like with the previous two Cars movies, there are Cars 3 sets under the LEGO DUPLO line as well. Although they are meant for children ages 2-5, the sets are so cute, I won’t be surprised if older kids and adult collectors also get them. Amongst the earlier sets my favorites were the #5829 LEGO DUPLO Pit Stop with the adorable hippy bus Fillmore from 2011, and the #6132 LEGO DUPLO Cars set with Red from 2012. In the 2017 collection, there are three sets: #10846 LEGO DUPLO Flo’s Cafe, #10856 LEGO DUPLO Mater’s Shed, and #10857 LEGO DUPLO Piston Cup Race. The chubby size and rounder shapes of LEGO DUPLO are a perfect match for Cars, and as on all LEGO DUPLO sets, the decorated pieces are printed. See the LEGO DUPLO section of the Online LEGO Shop.

LEGO CARS 3 CONTEST: While the LEGO Cars 3 sets mainly target children, the LEGO Cars Brick Posters Contest is for teen and adult LEGO fans (you have to be at least 13 to participate). The challenge is to create a your own LEGO brick-built movie poster for the Cars 3 film. You can create a brick-built version of an existing poster, or set up a scene showing what you think would make a great poster for the next installment of Lightning McQueen’s story. The deadline to enter is June 1st, 2017 at 10:00 AM EST.

A panel of judges from the LEGO Juniors team and Pixar Animation Studios will select one grand prize winner and two runner-up winners. The grand prize winner will receive a $200 shopping spree at the Online LEGO Shop, a unique Car-ified artwork of the winner made by a Disney artist in a LEGO-made frame, a one-of-a-kind LEGO mosaic of the Car-ified artwork, a Disney-Pixar Cars 3 movie poster signed by the filmmakers, and all eight of the new LEGO Juniors Cars 3 sets we talked about above. The two runner-ups will receive the same prizes, except for the personalized artwork and mosaic. You can read other details on the contest here: LEGO CARS 3 CONTEST AT REBRICK

While LEGO usually only release a couple of sets related to animated Disney films, they have been investing a lot more into the Cars franchise. Cars really is a good fit for LEGO due to the similar design style, colors, the popularity of the films, and because kids just love to play with cars. What do you think? How do you like the new LEGO Cars 3 sets? Are you planning to get any of them? And are you going to enter the contest? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section below! 😉

Happy LEGO Star Wars Day & weekend!

Today is Star Wars Day, so “May the Fourth be with you”! And it’s not just any Star Wars day, but it is also the 40th anniversary of the beloved sci-fi saga that so many of us grew up on. If you are a Star Wars fan, you may want to do something special today, like participate in the many Star Wars related events organized around the world, or celebrate with family and friends by re-watching the episodes and drinking some blue milk! Check the official Star Wars website for events and ideas. 🙂

If you are both a Star Wars and LEGO fan, you have even more fun things to do! LEGO always participates in Star Wars Day by holding special events at official LEGO stores, releasing new sets, and running special sales and promotions. We already talked about some of these events at the beginning of the month, but I thought to recap them here for your information and convenience.

FREE LEGO STAR WARS R2-D2 SET: Between May 4-7th, you will get a free #30611 LEGO Star Wars R2-D2 polybag with any LEGO Star Wars purchase of $50 or more. This is a really nice brick-built version of R2-D2 with some unique printed pieces that collectors will love to have, and it’s a great little model overall. You can check out all the sets under the LEGO Star Wars section of the Online LEGO Shop.

LEGO STAR WARS DOUBLE VIP POINTS & SALES: Also, for the rest of the week, between May 4-7th, LEGO VIP members will earn Double VIP Points on all LEGO Star Wars purchases both at official LEGO stores and the Online LEGO Shop.

LEGO STAR WARS ITEMS ON SALE: Some LEGO Star Wars items are going to be on sale during the May the 4th weekend, so make sure you check the LEGO Star Wars section of the Online LEGO Shop.

LEGO STAR WARS BONUS VIP POINTS: During entire the month of May, you will also earn Double VIP Points on two LEGO Star Wars sets; the #75171 LEGO Star Wars Battle on Scarif, and the #75172 LEGO Star Wars Y-wing Starfighter. If you have been eyeing these sets, this is an excellent time to pick them up. They are both available at the LEGO Star Wars section of the Online LEGO Shop.

LEGO STAR WARS UCS SNOWSPEEDER: And of course, no Star Wars Day would be complete without a new LEGO Star Wars Ultimate Collector Series set. The #75144 LEGO Star Wars UCS Snowspeeder is the latest addition to the list of advanced LEGO Star Wars models. You can find it under the LEGO Star Wars section of the Online LEGO Shop.

LEGO STAR WARS STORE EVENTS: Besides the LEGO Star Wars promotions and the new LEGO Star Wars UCS set, there are also some special events at official LEGO stores. All three of the activities mentioned here are restricted to ages 6-14. The first event runs from April 24-June 25th, where kids can take part in the Rebel Alliance by building vehicles, aircrafts or droids for the LEGO Star Wars Rebel Base Camp at their local LEGO store. By taking a photo of their creation and uploading it to the LEGO Life mobile app, kids will also receive wearable Yoda ears (while supplies last). Today, May 4th there are two events. All day kids can come in dressed as their favorite Star Wars character, and complete the search and find activity to earn wearable Yoda ears. At 5 PM there is going to be a minifigure speed build challenge with the fastest builder getting a free minifigure. This activity may require prior registration, so make sure you check with your store.

If you have been waiting to pick up some of the latest LEGO Star Wars sets, or even earlier releases, this is a great time to get them. You might consider the updated #75159 LEGO Star Wars Death Star which is both an impressive display-piece and an excellent play-set, the #75105 LEGO Star Wars Millennium Falcon, the #75098 LEGO Star Wars Assault on Hoth, the excellently designed and very popular #75060 LEGO Star Wars Slave I, the #75095 LEGO Star Wars TIE Figher, some of the sets related to the new films, the large buildable characters, or many of the smaller sets available at the LEGO Star Wars section of the Online LEGO Shop.

And if you already have some LEGO Star Wars sets, you might consider dusting them off for some playtime, rebuilding them, or even adding some upgrades while watching the episodes. There is plenty of ways to have fun on this special day, so feel free to geek out! 😀

What do you think? How are you planning to celebrate Star Wars Day? Are you going to any of the events, hang out with friends, or celebrate by yourself?
