LEGO Ideas Apollo 11 Saturn-V Rocket update

The LEGO Apollo 11 Saturn-V Rocket was originally submitted by LEGO fans whatsuptoday and saabfan back in the fall of 2014. The project achieved the required 10,000 public votes by the end of the following year, and it was announced to become the next LEGO Ideas set in the summer of 2016. We have heard almost nothing about the set since then, but a couple of days ago LEGO finally released the following teaser-image on their Facebook page. So let’s talk about it! 🙂

As you probably know already, LEGO Ideas submissions are created by LEGO fans, and if the project is chosen to become an official LEGO set, LEGO’s own designers will fine-tune the model to meet LEGO’s strict quality standards, while also remaining as faithful as possible to the original idea.

The original submission of the LEGO Apollo 11 Saturn-V Rocket is large… very large. The rocket is one meter (or 130 studs) high, which translates to an approximate 1:110 scale. This would make it the largest LEGO Ideas set to date, and the tallest LEGO set ever. Because of this, fans of the model feared that LEGO designers will shrink the model down to be more in line with previously released LEGO Ideas sets. However, the 1,179 piece-count did fit under the maximum threshold specified in the LEGO Ideas guidelines, which gave some hope.

Fortunately, it looks like any fears were unfounded, as looking at the picture, it is clear that this model is going to be enormous. While we can only see the top section, it is pretty obvious that LEGO didn’t shave down the size, and we are going to get a glorious one-meter high rocket!

The original model also includes a number of authentic features: a removable 1st rocket-stage with the main rocket engine, a removable 2nd rocket-stage with rocket engine, a removable 3rd rocket-stage with the Apollo spacecraft, the Apollo spacecraft with the Eagle Lunar Lander and the Lunar Orbiter, the rescue rocket on top of the whole spacecraft, and two minifigure astronauts. While we can’t see any of these features on the teaser-image, based on how similar the top section is to the original submission, we can be fairly certain that the rest will be there as well.

As the real-life Apollo 11 Saturn-V Rocket broke a number of records and is still one of the most amazing spacecraft ever built, it looks like the LEGO Ideas Apollo 11 Saturn-V Rocket is going to break a number of records as well. Even though we have only seen the top section so far, feedback from LEGO fans and the general public has been overwhelmingly positive. We can’t wait for this rocket to launch!

The LEGO Ideas Apollo 11 Saturn-V Rocket is going to be available sometime in June. In the meantime, you can also check out the currently available sets originally submitted by LEGO fans under the LEGO Ideas section of the Online LEGO Shop.

What do you think? How do you like the LEGO Ideas Apollo 11 Saturn-V Rocket? Are you excited? Feel free to share your thoughts and discuss in the comment section below! 😉

April 2017 – new LEGO sets & promotions

There are not a lot of new LEGO sets released in April, however there are some nice promotions, so if you have been waiting to purchase any of the previously released 2017 sets (or even earlier ones), this might be a good time to get them. So let’s take a look at what’s happening this month. 🙂

FREE LEGO CREATOR MINI VW BEETLE: From April 1st to the 15th you will get a free #40252 LEGO Creator Mini Volkswagen Beetle with purchases of $50 or more. This sweet little set has been available in other countries earlier, and now it finally made its way to North America. It is basically a tiny version of the #10252 LEGO Creator Volkswagen Beetle with the included surfboard and red cooler on top (please note that all the decorations you see are stickers). Very cute, and a good source of those beautiful dark-azure pieces. This offer is valid on all orders at official LEGO stores and the Online LEGO Shop.

FREE LEGO FRIENDS TIC-TAC-TOE GAME: This is another very nice offer that is valid for the entire month of April. You will get a free LEGO Friends Tic-Tac-Toe Game with LEGO Friends purchases of $20 or more. (So, you will get both the VW Beetle and the Tic-Tac-Toe Game if your order is at least $50, including at least $20 worth of LEGO Friends sets – that’s an awesome offer!) The LEGO Friends game set includes a ridiculous number of cute little bunnies and hamsters, and is perfect for Easter! There are some really excellent LEGO Friends sets this year. I especially recommend the small LEGO Friends Hobbies collection with a great selection of unique and/or rare accessories, and they are only $9.99 each. The #41311 LEGO Friends Heartlake Pizzeria is another really nice set, and you might also want to check out the award-winning LEGO Friends Amusement Park collection. You can find them at the LEGO Friends section of the Online LEGO Shop.

LEGO PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN SILENT MARY: While the #71042 LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean Silent Mary became available to LEGO VIP members last month, it is now officially released to the general public. We talked about the set in detail previously (see links at the end of this post). It is a gorgeously detailed display-set for Pirates of the Caribbean fans and those who like big LEGO ships. You can find it under the LEGO Disney section of the Online LEGO Shop.

LEGO PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN BRICKHEADZ: Two other sets related to the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales film that are now available are the #41593 LEGO BrickHeadz Captain Jack Sparrow and the #41594 LEGO BrickHeadz Captain Armando Salazar. Both sets belong to Series 1 of the LEGO BrickHeadz collection, which we have talked about previously (see links at the end). The sets are $9.99 each, and provide a fun building experience in a cute and blocky style. You can find both sets under the LEGO Disney section of the Online LEGO Shop.

LEGO STAR WARS UCS SNOWSPEEDER: The #75144 LEGO Star Wars Ultimate Collector Series Snowspeeder is scheduled for release on May 4th (Star Wars Day), however LEGO VIP members will get early access to the set on April 29th. We have previewed and discussed the set here in detail: LEGO Star Wars UCS Snowspeeder Coming! It is already listed under the LEGO Star Wars section of the Online LEGO Shop.

LEGO ARCHITECTURE GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM: The #21035 LEGO Architecture Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum is now available. This is the latest release in the LEGO Architecture line, and features the Guggenheim’s modernist facade with its circular rotundas and distinctive lines, plus the eight-story annex tower and a section of New York City’s 5th Avenue Museum Mile including scaled yellow cabs. It’s substantial set with 744 pieces, beautiful curves, a lovely color-scheme, and printed elements to spell out the name on the building. The price is $79.99, and the set is available under the LEGO Architecture section of the Online LEGO Shop.

These are all the new offerings for April, which is not a bad thing, as it allows us to catch up on the large wave of new sets that were released last month, including LEGO Star Wars, LEGO Super Heroes, LEGO Minecraft, LEGO Elves, LEGO Technic, LEGO Speed Champions, LEGO Classic, and LEGO Brickheadz. You can find them all under the New Sets section of the Online LEGO Shop.

If you live near a LEGO store, there are also some Easter-related activities suitable for young LEGO fans. See the calendar below.

What do you think? Are you excited about this month’s offerings? Do you have any favorite sets that you are planning to get? And what do you think of the promotional items? Feel free to share your thoughts and discuss in the comment section below! 😉
