The LEGO Ninjago Movie mechs review

With the release of The LEGO Ninjago Movie this weekend, let’s continue looking at all the new sets related to the film. You will find links to previous reviews at the end of this post, and today we will examine some of the most awesome sets in the collection; the ones with the mechs! There is no other LEGO theme that includes so many amazing robotic vehicles all at once, unless you want to count the old LEGO Exo-Force theme. 🙂

The LEGO Ninjago Movie collection include mechs that look like animals, birds, giant walking robots, and even a shark! The collection is like a feast for those who love to build robotic vehicles of every shape and style! And they are also an excellent study for those who would like to learn how to build them. There is a mech for everyone here!

As there are so many mechs in The LEGO Ninjago Movie collection, in this overall review we will only look at each of them briefly to highlight their special features. I will also include video-reviews of the sets by JANGBRiCKS, so you can check them out in more detail.

#70611 LEGO NINJAGO MOVIE WATER STRIDER: What I like most about this set is how large and intimidating it is, and how well it matches the LEGO Ultra Agents vehicles. Very sturdy too! Here is the official description: Launch into battle against the shark army and pretend to walk on water and climb walls with this awesome mech. The Water Strider features a 360-degree rotating minifigure cockpit, 6-stud rapid shooter and 4 posable legs and feet to create powerful battle poses. Includes 4 minifigures: Nya, Kai, Puffer and Shark Army Thug. Water Strider measures over 7” (18cm) high, 11” (30cm) long and 11” (30cm) wide. 494 pieces. Price: $39.99 – BUY HERE

#70612 LEGO NINJAGO MOVIE GREEN NINJA DRAGON: It seems like LEGO designers are really fond of dragons, because they include dragons in so many LEGO themes; the old LEGO Vikings line, LEGO Castle, LEGO Elves, and of course LEGO Ninjago. This two-feet-long dragon is a beautiful representation of the evolution of LEGO dragons in both building techniques and style. While this is technically a mech, it could very well pass for a real dragon. Here is the official description: Outwit The Green Ninja’s evil father Garmadon with this mighty mech. The Green Ninja Mech Dragon features articulated snapping jaws, a fully posable body, wheel-activated swooshing tail, 2 leg-mounted stud shooters and 2 hidden pop-out thrusters. Includes 4 minifigures: The Green Ninja, Wu, Garmadon and Charlie. Green Ninja Mech Dragon measures over 5” (13cm) high, 23” (60cm) long and 4” (12cm) wide. 544 pieces. Price: $49.99 – BUY HERE

#70613 LEGO NINJAGO MOVIE GARMA MECHA MAN: So big, so dark, so many sharp teeth! The shape of this massive mech is kind of a combination of a shark and Garmadon himself. If you like evil mechs, this is the ultimate badguy machine! Here is the official description: Help Lloyd protect civilian Pat from attack by Garma Mecha Man with this awesome set. This huge and highly posable mech features an opening minifigure cockpit for Garmadon, spring-loaded shark blaster, ammo belt and a fish tank. Includes 4 minifigures: Garmadon, Great White, Lloyd and Pat. Garma Mecha Man measures over 11” (30cm) high, 5” (14cm) long and 9” (24cm) wide. 747 pieces. Price: $59.99 – BUY HERE

#70614 LEGO NINJAGO MOVIE LIGHTNING JET: In contrast to the previous mech this one light and fast, like a bird! And while it looks fragile, it is actually quite sturdy and can be maneuvered by a very handy hidden handle. Here is the official description: Save Ed and Edna from the shark army’s crab with Jay’s Lightning Jet in this thrilling set. The jet has a handle for easy pick-up-and-play and maximum swooshability, plus an opening minifigure cockpit, spring-loaded shooter and trigger-activated rotating electro-disc. The crab features posable legs, a snapping pincer and 6-stud rapid shooter. Includes 6 minifigures: Jay, Ed, Edna, Crusty, Jelly and Shark Army Thug. Lightning Jet measures over 7” (20cm) high, 17” (44cm) long and 11” (30cm) wide. 876 pieces. Price: $59.99 – BUY HERE

#70615 LEGO NINJAGO MOVIE FIRE MECH: This set reminds me so much of the old LEGO Exo-Force mechs, and it is my personal favorite. It is actually much larger you might expect; 14 inches tall! The construction is very stable, but this also means that the knee joints don’t bend. I don’t mind this at all, but some LEGO fans do. Here is the official description: Get set for sizzling battle action with this huge and highly posable mech. The Fire Mech features an opening minifigure cockpit, 2 shoulder disc shooters and 2 arms with non-shooting fire blasters. Includes 6 minifigures: Kai, Zane, Lauren, Henry, Hammer Head and Jelly. Fire Mech measures over 14” (36cm) high, 4” (11cm) long and 8” (21cm) wide. 944 pieces. Price: $69.99 – BUY HERE

#70616 LEGO NINJAGO MOVIE ICE TANK: When I first saw this set it reminded me of the Star Wars Star Destroyers, and it also looks like an icicle. Whatever it is, is certainly an interesting shape, and it also comes with some unique play-features, which you can see in the video-review below. Here is the official description: Help Zane save Patty Keys and Torben from the shark soldiers with this action-packed set. This cool vehicle features an opening minifigure cockpit, big tracks, ice cannon with 6-stud rapid shooter, and a rotating ice container. Includes 5 minifigures: Zane, Shark Army Thug, Angler, Patty Keys and Torben. Ice Tank measures over 8” (21cm) high, 12” (31cm) long and 9” (23cm) wide. 914 pieces. Price: $79.99 – BUY HERE

The video-player below includes reviews of all six mechs by JANGBRiCKS. He will show you all the play-featured, minifigures, and other details of each set. You can use the drop-down list in the upper left corner to select the review you would like to watch, or you can just let them play one after another. Each review is about 10 minutes long.

As you can see, there is a mech here for every taste and style, and as I mentioned at the beginning, they are also great study material for mech builders. They are all excellent designs, but very different, so I would suggest that you go with the one you like the most. You can’t really go wrong with any of them, especially with such unusually low prices! All the sets are listed under The LEGO Ninjago Movie section of the Online LEGO Shop.

What do you think? How do you like The LEGO Ninjago Movie mechs? Did you build any of them already? Which one is your favorite? And how do you think they compare to the movie version? Feel free to share your thoughts and discuss in the comment section below! 😉

Building Better Days LEGO building contest

I have been contacted by a non-profit charity called Building Better Days that provides building toys to hospitalized children in Maryland. The organization was born out of the inspiration of a 12-year-old boy named Ben, who was diagnosed with lymphoma, and spent long weeks in the hospital getting chemo and recovering from treatments. Ben’s favorite thing to do during his hospital stay was to build with LEGO and other building toys. After completing his treatment, Ben decided that he wanted to help other kids who were in the hospital, and bring a bit of joy to them by providing building toys. You can learn more at the BuildingBetterDays.com website and Facebook page. It sounds like a great organization. 🙂

Building Better Days also regularly runs building contests, both live and online, just for a bit of building fun for kids and teens. They asked me to share with our readers about a contest they are currently running. Please note that contests like this often have much more relaxed rules and standards than official LEGO building competitions. You can use LEGO, Mega Construx (formerly Mega Bloks), and similar building toys, and build pretty much whatever you like within the rules. It’s just for fun, and the prizes are pretty nice, so you might want to participate, or know a child or teen who would. Below are the details.

BUILDING BETTER DAYS CONTEST – OVERVIEW: Do you love building with LEGO? If so, enter the Building Better Days Building Contest. Build an original creation out of your favorite bricks, take a picture, and enter to win at BuildingBetterDays.com.

BUILDING BETTER DAYS CONTEST – RULES: This contest is open to children and teens up to age 18 with the consent of parent/guardian in the United States. Your entry must be an original creation. Only one entry per person. You can use any style building brick (examples are LEGO, K’Nex, Mega Bloks). To enter the contest complete the registration form, and take a photo of your completed original creation and upload it in the registration form. You can read more details on the contest entry page.

BUILDING BETTER DAYS CONTEST – DEADLINE: The contest registration form must be completed and submitted by midnight Eastern Standard Time on November 1, 2017. You must register and submit an image of your creation for the contest at BuildingBetterDays.com from October 1, 2017 through November 1, 2017.

BUILDING BETTER DAYS CONTEST – JUDGES: Entries will be judged by Building Better Days volunteers and the winners will be selected based on creativity and originality. Winners will be announced on the Building Better Days Facebook page on November 13, 2017.

BUILDING BETTER DAYS CONTEST – PRIZES: One first place builder will receive a $100 Amazon gift card. Three runner-up builders will receive a $50 Amazon gift card. Six special category builders will receive a $25 Wawa gift card, which can be used at Wawa convenience stores and gas stations as well as at their online shop. (The Wawa Foundation is the sponsor of this contest.)

I think this would be a great contest to participate in for children who never entered a LEGO building contest before, as the rules are less strict and intimidating. It would give them valuable experience in designing and building a model, as well as taking pictures, and submitting their creation to the contest. And don’t forget about the other exciting LEGO building contests still currently running (see links at the end of this post). There is something for everyone to participate in!

What do you think? How do you like the Building Better Days Building Contest? Are you planning to enter? Do you have some ideas already? Feel free to share and discuss in the comment section below! 😉
