LEGO Life introduction, contest & more!

You might remember that in the November-December issue of the LEGO Club Magazine we got our first introduction to LEGO Life, a new social media app for kids that replaces the previous LEGO message boards (see: LEGO Club Magazine: Moana & More!). At that time, the app was only available in the UK, but since then it expanded to other countries as well. To celebrate the launch of LEGO Life, LEGO posted a contest on the ReBrick website. Below are further details about the app and the contest. 🙂

LEGO LIFE APP DETAILS: The LEGO Group recently announced the launch of LEGO Life, a safe social network for kids under the age of 13. The app-centered digital experience allows young LEGO builders of all levels and interests to connect with a community of like-minded peers to express their creativity, share their LEGO creations, interact with LEGO characters, and inspire one another. The experience launched on January 31st in the U.S., U.K., Canada, France, Germany, Denmark, Austria and Switzerland, with additional markets opening in 2017 and 2018.

“The LEGO Group aims to develop digital experiences that complement and enhance LEGO play,” said Rob Lowe, head of LEGO Life. “LEGO Life creates a platform that amplifies the joy of building and pride of creation that kids experience with tactile play through the digital world in a safe way – further unleashing creativity among kids and tweens on a much broader scale.” LEGO Life bridges physical and digital play experiences, innovating on the best of today’s social network features to add a social layer to LEGO play. After seeing millions of kids share their pride of creation in the “Cool Creations” section of LEGO Club Magazine and use LEGO.com message boards to share stories and photos about LEGO building, a richer, more dynamic social media platform such as LEGO Life is a natural next step in the evolution of LEGO community engagement. “LEGO Life provides the platform where kids and tweens can take their LEGO creations and stories and give them the audience they deserve,” added Lowe.

The LEGO Life app lets kids personalize their LEGO experience through direct interaction with their favorite LEGO characters, exclusive content, an in-depth 3D LEGO minifigure avatar creator, and fun building inspiration and challenges. LEGO Life also introduces a custom LEGO Emoji Keyboard with which kids and tweens can communicate about what they create in LEGO form, as well as comment on what their peers share. “LEGO bricks are already established as a global visual language that kids understand and use to express themselves,” explained Lowe. “The LEGO Emoji Keyboard takes this personalization one step further with a keyboard of recognizable emojis augmented by stickers and phrases that let kids engage safely within LEGO Life.” According to global research that informed the development of LEGO Life, 90 percent of kids surveyed are aware of emojis and their use in communication. When asked if they use emoji icons, approximately 40 percent of kids said “yes.” By infusing a LEGO look and feel into familiar emoji vernacular, the LEGO Emoji Keyboard helps kids and tweens inspire and support each other even though their spelling and typing skills may be still developing.

Similar to mainstream social media platforms, LEGO Life delivers a newsfeed customized to user preferences. The app encourages kids and tweens to identify and “follow” topics of interest so that their feed is populated with relevant images, challenges and more. For example, kids can choose to follow groups dedicated to certain animals, vehicles, heroes, specific LEGO themes, seasonal programs or regional topics that they find most relevant. Additionally, LEGO Life provides kids and tweens with inspiration and mentorship in fun and engaging ways. LEGO Master Builders will share creations and issue a variety of building challenges within LEGO Life to encourage building and sharing among the community. Characters such as Master Wu from LEGO Ninjago, Emma from LEGO Friends and LEGO Batman will share building inspiration and will appear within the app to comment on member builds. New features will be continually added to the experience. As the network grows and expands, users will find other ways to customize their LEGO experience, such as earning rewards for their engagement in LEGO activities and the ability to inventory their LEGO collection, among many other things.

LEGO Life will also be available through many other LEGO touchpoints to enable as many LEGO fans as possible to experience its potential. LEGO Life is a safe social network for kids under 13. It is designed to be a child’s first digital social experience, taking users by the hand and introducing them to some of the core concepts of a social network, all through the trusted values associated with the LEGO brand. As detailed in the Digital Safety section of LEGO Life, participants’ safety is assured in several ways. LEGO Life prevents kids from sharing personal information, images, or anything that could allow users to identify and locate one another. For example, when a user creates an account, he or she uses the random name generator to create a silly 3-word mix for a display name, such as “DukeCharmingShrimp” or “ChairmanWilyDolphin.” In place of real or facial photos for LEGO Life profiles, users create their avatar by selecting the LEGO minifigure or minidoll of their choice, adding clothing, hair and more to create their virtual persona. All content and comments on LEGO Life are monitored by LEGO employees who specialize in moderation to ensure that it is LEGO Life-appropriate and child-friendly. All moderators go through brand and child safety training, and the moderation team is located in LEGO offices around the world to ensure quality, always-on service. Use of the LEGO Emoji Keyboard replaces actual text when commenting on user-generated content. Commenting is tightly controlled and pre-moderated while emoji comments are post-moderated, keeping communication simple, universal, positive and fun. LEGO Life may be downloaded for free beginning today in the App Store for iOS devices and at Google Play for Android devices.

LEGO LIFE CONTEST – DESCRIPTION: To mark the launch of LEGO Life, LEGO invites you to rebuild the LEGO Life logo and add a little something to it (or a big something) for the chance to win! You can rebuild the logo adding your own embellishments, adapt it to fit your favorite LEGO theme, and give it style and character. The top five entries will be showcased on the LEGO Life app, where the community will vote for one grand prize winner.

LEGO LIFE CONTEST – HOW TO ENTER: Create your version of the LEGO Life logo using LEGO elements or digital building tool. Take up to five photos of your creation and submit them to the contest. Make sure to show off all angles of your creation. Use the description field to tell us about your entry. When you receive a “Success!” pop-up notification after clicking “submit” on the entry submission page, your entry has successfully been submitted. LEGO’s moderation team will review it within 1-3 working days to make sure it fits all the contest rules. Here is the CONTEST ENTRY PAGE

LEGO LIFE CONTEST – RULES: Your entry must recognizable as a LEGO Life logo. If chosen as a winner, you must be available for a call with the LEGO Life team to discuss ideas for a building contest on LEGO Life. Your entry can contain LEGO IPs/LEGO created themes, such as LEGO City, LEGO Ninjago, or LEGO Friends. However it must not include third party IPs such as LEGO Star Wars, LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, etc. You may NOT build the LEGO logo, only the LEGO Life logo. You can submit multiple entries to the contest, but only one entry per person will be considered when the semi-finalists are selected. This contest is open to LEGO Digital Designer (LDD) entries, however, make sure your images don’t show the baseplate from build mode. Entry photos should show your creation only, and should not show recognizable features of any person or any commercial product other than those of the LEGO Group. As with all ReBrick contests, you must be at least 13 years old to enter. You can read other rules here.

LEGO LIFE CONTEST – DEADLINE: Submit your entry no later than the March 1st 2017 at 10:00 a.m. EST. If you’re not sure what time zone you’re in you can use a time zone converter.

LEGO LIFE CONTEST – JUDGES: A panel of judges from the LEGO Life team will select five semi-finalists for the contest. They will judge these semi-finalists upon: overall coolness and originality – 25%, most inspired details – 25%, attention to contest theme – 25%, best use of LEGO elements – 25%. The top five semi-finalists will be added into the LEGO Life app after March 31th, and the LEGO Life community will have the opportunity to vote for the grand prize winner by liking their favorite entry. The entry with the most votes will be selected as the grand prize winner!

LEGO LIFE CONTEST – PRIZES: From five semi-finalist one grand prize winner will be selected. This grand prize winner will receive: 1.) The opportunity to work with the LEGO Life team to design their own contest for younger builders on the LEGO Life app. 2.) Shopping spree for $400 USD on Shop.LEGO.com. 3.) Personalized LEGO Life Magazine cover together with an example of the new LEGO Life Magazine. The remaining four semi-finalist winners will receive a shopping spree for $200 USD on Shop.LEGO.com. Winners will be contacted on the email address associated with their LEGO ID account after March 8th 2017. Winners will be announced on ReBrick when all winners have returned the signed Winner’s Certification Documents. A winner who does not return their Winner’s Certification Document within five days of receiving it will be disqualified, and a new winner will be selected.

As you can see, this is a fantastic opportunity for LEGO fans, and not just because of the fun challenge and generous prizes, but also for the opportunity to work with the LEGO Life team. If you decide to enter, we wish you the best and hope you win!

Also, the LEGO Creator Build and Rebuild Contest and the LEGO Adventure Time Contest are still open, so you may want to consider entering those one as well. We have talked about the LEGO Creator Contest here, but I somehow missed the announcement of the LEGO Adventure Time Contest, however you can read more about it on the contest page, and see the entries submitted so far. This contest basically gives you the opportunity to build more Adventure Time characters, and the grand prize winner receives a super awesome, limited-edition Adventure Time electric guitar featuring exclusive artwork signed by the members of the Adventure Time cast, plus some other goodies! Runner-ups will get great prizes as well. 😉

German Toy Fair new LEGO sets & more!

This time of the year is always exciting for LEGO fans because of the various toy fairs where LEGO reveals many of the new sets and themes. The London Toy Fair took place at the end of January, however this year the restrictions were even tighter than usual, so nothing really came out of this event. The much more interesting German Toy fair just finished yesterday, with LEGO having a significant presence. And there is also the New York Toy Fair, which is going to be held later this month. So let’s take a look at what was revealed so far. 🙂

The German Toy Fair pictures enclosed here have been shared by PromoBricks, and you can find even more images at their Facebook page. There is also a good selection of photos from different angles at this Brickset flickr gallery. I have also included some video-footage by Zusammengebaut in the play-list below, so you can see the new sets in more detail.

2017 LEGO ARCHITECTURE SETS: There are a couple of new LEGO Architecture sets coming; the #21035 LEGO Architecture Guggenheim Museum and the #21036 LEGO Architecture Arc De Triomphe. Both are quite substantial sets and the designs look very nice.

2017 LEGO CITY COASTGUARD SETS: The LEGO City Coast Guard sets get resurrected regularly with fresh designs. This time we get the #60163 LEGO City Coast Guard Starter Set, the #60164 LEGO City Sea Rescue Plane, the #60165 LEGO City 4×4 Response Unit, the #60166 LEGO City Heavy-Duty Rescue, the #60167 LEGO City Coast Guard Headquarters, and the #60169 LEGO City Coast Guard Cargo Terminal. It’s nice that LEGO is using the same color-scheme as before, so the sets can be mixed with the previous releases.

2017 LEGO CITY JUNGLE SETS: This is the new sub-theme for LEGO City, replacing the LEGO City Volcano Exploration sets from last year. The new sets are still about exploration, but this time the adventure takes place in the jungle. Sets include the #60156 LEGO City Jungle Buggy, the #60157 LEGO City Jungle Starter Set, the #60158 LEGO City Jungle Cargo Helicopter, the #60159 LEGO City Jungle Halftrack Mission, the #60160 LEGO City Jungle Mobile Lab, and the #60161 LEGO City Exploration Site. At least to me, one of the most exciting features is the new big cat mould.

2017 LEGO CITY OTHER SETS: The #60134 LEGO City Fun the Park – City People Pack has been very well received by LEGO fans, so LEGO is releasing a similar set later this year called the #60153 LEGO City Fun at the Beach – City People Pack. Another interesting new set is the #60154 LEGO City Bus Station, which is the second set that includes a wheelchair.

2017 LEGO CREATOR SETS: There is a good number of LEGO Creator sets coming later this year as well. This includes the #31066 LEGO Creator Space Shuttle Explorer, the #31070 LEGO Creator Turbo Track Racer, the #31067 LEGO Creator Poolside Holiday, the #31068 LEGO Creator Modern Home, and the #31069 LEGO Creator Family Villa.

2017 LEGO JUNIORS SETS: LEGO Juniors continues to offer an excellent selection of sets for children who are transitioning from DUPLO to regular LEGO. The sets are also interesting for adults because of the very nice designs and unique printed elements. Upcoming sets include the #10738 LEGO Juniors Snow White’s Forest Cottage, and some other sets that are not yet named.

2017 LEGO SPEED CHAMPIONS SETS: These sets have been revealed already, but since they haven’t been released yet, I will list them here: #75877 LEGO Speed Champions Mercedes-AMG GT3, #75878 LEGO Speed Champions Bugatti Chiron, #75879 LEGO Speed Scuderia-Ferrari SF16-H, #75880 LEGO Speed Champions McLaren Road Car, #75881 LEGO Speed Champions 2016 Ford GT & 1966 Ford GT40, #75882 LEGO Speed Champions Ferrari FXX K & Development, and #75883 LEGO Speed Champions Mercedes AMG. You can see all the sets in the Brickset database.

2017 LEGO DISNEY CARS SETS: It was also revealed at the German Toy Fair that the LEGO Disney Cars theme is coming back with eight new sets featuring scenes and characters from the Cars 3 movie. The sets were not on display.

2017 LEGO TECHNIC SETS: There were three LEGO Technic vehicles displayed at the German Toy Fair; the #42068 LEGO Technic Airport Rescue Vehicle, the #42069 LEGO Technic Extreme Adventure, and the #42070 LEGO Technic 6×6 All Terrain Tow Truck. They may not be as exciting as last year’s sets, but they do have solid designs, and the teddy bear on the tow truck is such a winning detail.

2017 LEGO MARVEL SUPER HEROES SETS: While these sets have been revealed previously, it is worth mentioning that the three new LEGO Marvel Super Heroes sets were also on display, including the #76079 LEGO Super Heroes Ravager Attack, the #76080 LEGO Super Heroes Ayesha’s Revenge, and the #76081 LEGO Super Heroes The Milano vs. The Abilisk. It is interesting to see this new version of the Milano and comparing it to the older one in the #76021 LEGO Super Heroes The Milano Spaceship Rescue set from 2014. There were also some set boxes displayed based on upcoming films, but with no set images. This includes two LEGO Super Heroes Spider-Man: Homecoming sets (#76082 and #76083), and two LEGO Super Heroes Thor; Ragnarok sets (#76084 and #75088).

2017 LEGO DC SUPER HEROES SETS: For the 2017 LEGO DC Super Heroes Justice League sets only the boxes were displayed with no set images. This includes #76085, #76086, and #76087.

2017 LEGO BATMAN MOVIE SETS: There will be a second wave of LEGO Batman Movie sets coming this summer, including the #70913 LEGO Batman Movie Scarecrow Fearful Face-Off, the #70914 LEGO Batman Movie Bane Toxic Truck Attack, the #70915 LEGO Batman Movie Two-Face Double, the #70916 LEGO Batman Movie The Batwing, and the #70917 LEGO Batman Movie set with no revealed name.

2017 LEGO NINJAGO MOVIE SETS: The LEGO Ninjago movie is coming out later this year, and the new sets will be based on the film. They were not on display at the German Toy Fair, but since we already have their names, I thought to include them here; #70606 LEGO Ninjago Movie Jay’s Electro Waver, #70607 LEGO Ninjago Movie Titanium Turbo, #70608 LEGO Ninjago Movie Samurai Stealth Takedown, #70609 LEGO Ninjago Movie Master’s Dojo, #70610 LEGO Ninjago Movie Nya’s Water Brigade, #70611 LEGO Ninjago Movie Dragon’s Cove, #70612 LEGO Ninjago Movie Spinjitzu Sanctuary, #70613 LEGO Ninjago Movie Ninja Wake Run, #70614 LEGO Ninjago Movie Kai’s Blazing Breaker, #70615 LEGO Ninjago Movie Rai Mech, #70616 LEGO Ninjago Movie Krypt of the Cave, #70617 LEGO Ninjago Movie Backstreet Break-in, #70618 LEGO Ninjago Movie Shadow Legion Ambush, and #70620 Ninjago Movie City Invasion. Besides these fourteen sets, there are also going to be a series of twenty LEGO Ninjago Movie Collectible Minifigures.

2017 LEGO NEXO KNIGHTS SETS: LEGO Nexo Knights is also continuing with another strong wave. Sets include the #70353 LEGO Nexo Knights The Heligoyle, the #70354 Axl’s Rumble Maker, the #70355 LEGO Nexo Knights Aaron’s Rock Climber, #70356 LEGO Nexo Knights The Colossus of Ultimate Destruction, #70357 LEGO Nexo Knights Knighton Castle, the #70361 LEGO Nexo Knights Macy’s Bot Drop Dragon, and the #70373 LEGO Nexo Knights Nexo Combo Powers Wave 2.

2017 LEGO BOOST SET: The new robotics kit called LEGO BOOST was also showcased at the German Toy Fair. See the full press-release with more details on this set here: LEGO BOOST – A New Type of LEGO Robotics

2017 LEGO ELVES SETS: The first wave of the LEGO Elves goblin sets will be released this spring, and three more sets will be coming in the summer. This includes the #41186 LEGO Elves Azari & the Escape from the Goblins, the #41187 LEGO Elves Rosalyn’s Healing Shelter, and the #41188 LEGO Elves Escape from the Goblin King’s Fortress.

2017 LEGO FRIENDS SETS: The main subtheme for LEGO Friends is going to be winter sports. Upcoming sets include the #41321 LEGO Friends Winter Sports SUV, the #41322 LEGO Friends Winter Sports Ski Rink, the #41323 LEGO Friends Winter Sports Ski Chalet, and the #41324 LEGO Friends Winter Sports Ski Lift. Other sets that will be coming later this year are the #41315 LEGO Friends Heartlake Surf Shop, the #41316 LEGO Friends Andrea’s Speedboat Transport, the #41317 Sunshine Catamaran, and the highly anticipated #41318 LEGO Friends Heartlake Hospital.

2017 LEGO STAR WARS SETS: While the upcoming LEGO Star Wars sets were not displayed at the German Toy Fair, some of the set numbers and names are already listed in the Brickset database, so for the sake of completeness I thought to include them here: #75166 LEGO Star Wars First Order Transport Speeder Battle Pack, #75167 LEGO Star Wars Bounty Hunter Speeder Bike Battle Pack, #75178 LEGO Star Wars Jakku Quad Jumper, #75180 LEGO Star Wars Rathtar Escape, #75182 LEGO Star Wars Republic Fighter Tank, #75183 LEGO Star Wars Darth Vader Transformation, #75185 LEGO Star Wars Freemaker Adventures Tracker I, #75186 LEGO Star Wars Freemaker Adventures The Arrowhead, #75531 LEGO Star Wars Stormtrooper Commander, and #75532 LEGO Star Wars Scout Trooper & Speeder Bike.

After a fantastic selection of super awesome sets in 2016, it seems like that 2017 is a bit more muted, with sets that are mostly rehashes of older themes and proven designs. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as it allows LEGO fans to carefully select the sets they are most attracted to, rather than feeling pressured to buy the next big and shiny thing. Also, while the designs may not look as interesting as last year, with the introduction of some really excellent new elements and colors, there is a lot to learn and appreciate in regards to building techniques. Also, keep in mind that more upcoming sets may be revealed during the New York Toy Fair.

So what do you think? How do you like the 2017 LEGO sets and themes revealed so far? Which sets are you looking forward to the most, and which ones are you planning to get? Feel free to share your thoughts and discuss in the comment section below! 😉
