LEGO Batman Movie sets review – part 7

The LEGO Batman Movie is going to be released in just a few days! Exciting, isn’t it? While we have reviewed a good number of The LEGO Batman Movie sets already (see links at the end of this post), there are still some that we haven’t discussed. So today we will take a look at two of the vehicles – both belonging to Batman; the #70905 LEGO Batman Movie Batmobile, and the #70908 LEGO Batman Movie Scuttler. 🙂

#70905 LEGO BATMAN MOVIE THE BATMOBILE: This version of the Batmobile is not meant to be a replica of any of the classic bat vehicles, but it does borrow some elements from the originals to make it instantly recognizable. It’s all black with just a touch of red and “very-very dark gray” (as Batman would say), and of course it has batwings. It is interesting that LEGO choose to use a new trans-yellow window instead of trans-clear or trans-black. It should make LEGO Classic Space fans very happy.

The use of unique elements doesn’t stop with the windscreen. There are very useful and new parts throughout the set. Some of the most notable ones are two 2x2x2 robot bodies and 2×2 robot heads in black, large engine piece in black, eleven 1×2 ingots in black, various size curved slopes in black, four pentagonal tiles (Nexo Knights shields) in black, six macaroni bricks in pearl-dark-gray, and 1 trans-clear LEGO Bionicle tooth piece.

The Batmobile also has some play-features. The roof can be popped off via a knob at the back, and there are a couple of small stud-shooters. The main feature of the vehicle is the multidirectional wheels. Here is the official description with more details, and you can also watch the video-review below: Race through Gotham City in pursuit of Man-Bat and the Kabuki Twins in the Batmobile. This set from The LEGO Batman Movie features the Batmobile with a dual cockpit for Batman and Robin, two stud shooters and multidirectional wheels for three different modes—race mode, monster truck mode and parallel-parking mode. Man-Bat is equipped with a dynamite element and the Kabuki Twins each have claws to intensify the role-play battle action. Includes five minifigures: Batman, Robin, Man-Bat and the Kabuki Twins. The Batmobile measures over 3” (10cm) high, 11” (29cm) long and 5” (15cm) wide in race mode. 581 pieces. Price: $59.99 – BUY HERE

#70908 LEGO BATMAN MOVIE THE SCUTTLER: This is one interesting vehicle. Sort of somewhere between a cool mech and a creepy creature. It is shaped like a bat, but with no wings. The arms can be extended quite far, the head is fully posable with adjustable ears, and there is also a hidden jetpack for Batman and a net-shooter.

The minifigure selection in this set is excellent. Of course we get Batman, The Joker with a new hairpiece and a fabric coattail, and Poison Ivy comes with that gorgeous new hairpiece and a bunch of posable vines. Commissioner Gordon is all decked out with printing on the front and back of his torso, as well as on the arms. Barbara Gordon, on the other hand, comes with a completely plain torso, which is surprising. She does have dual moulded arms and a vest to give her some more interesting details. I would say that Dick Grayson steals the show with his glittery suit and a new bowtie piece.

Here is the official description: Ride The Scuttler with Batman to rescue hostages taken by The Joker at Commissioner Gordon’s retirement party, with this exciting set from The LEGO Batman Movie. The highly posable Scuttler features a net shooter, six stud shooters, extendable arms, an opening minifigure cockpit and hidden jetpack for Batman. Batman is also equipped with a Batarang to take on The Joker, Poison Ivy and her vine monster. Includes six minifigures: Batman, The Joker, Poison Ivy, Commissioner Gordon, Barbara Gordon and Dick Grayson. The Scuttler measures over 8” (22cm) high, 9” (25cm) wide and 10” (27cm) long with arms retracted, and over 14” (38cm) long with arms extended. 775 pieces. Price: $79.99 – BUY HERE

There are a number of great vehicles in The LEGO Batman Movie lineup, and it really depends on your personal taste which one you like the best. Neither The LEGO Batman Movie Batmobile or The Scuttler are classic Batman vehicles, however I think they are excellent for parts and as starter sets for customization. All those black elements and interesting accessories give you a lot to work with. I wouldn’t call these the best Batman vehicles ever, but they give Batman something to tinker with. And both sets come with a generous number of minifigures, including some exclusive characters. You can find both sets at The LEGO Batman Movie section of the Online LEGO Shop.

What do you think? How do you like The LEGO Batman Movie vehicles? Are you planning to get either of them? Or do you have them already? Feel free to share your thoughts and own review in the comment section below! 😉

LEGO guitars & other musical instruments

The newly released #10255 LEGO Creator Assembly Square features a music store on the second floor of one of the buildings, however the store only carries a few musical instruments: a drum set, a saxophone, and a couple of guitars. Since there is plenty more room in the store, this is a perfect place for customization. So I did a bit of research on what other instruments could be added to the store. 🙂

Some musical instruments can be brick-built, like a piano or drum kit. In fact, there is a gorgeously designed upright piano in the dance studio, right above the music store in the same set. If you are looking for brick-built minifig-size musical instruments, the LEGO Friends line is a particularly good source, as one of the main characters, Andrea, is really into music. Then there are also small sets like the #850486 LEGO Rock Band set (pictured below), that got some nice instruments.

LEGO also makes moulded musical instrument. This includes a saxophone, maracas, a chrome-gold bugle (no longer in production, but can be found on BrickLink.com), and a bagpipe. There is also a shorter and longer flute – both regular LEGO bar pieces with printed flute holes. And there is a violin case, but no violin…

And LEGO also makes four types of guitars. An acoustic guitar that is already included with the LEGO Creator Assembly Square, and also comes with the LEGO Minifigures Series 16 Serenader. The second mould looks like a Gipson Flying V electric guitar, and is available in two versions; black with white and silver print (comes with the LEGO Minifigures Series 4 Punk Rocker), and white with black and hot-pink print (comes with the LEGO Minifigures Series 7 Rocker Girl). The third mould is also an electric guitar, shaped like a Dean ML, and is available in two versions; red with black and silver print (comes with the LEGO Minifigures Series 12 Rock Star), and black with silver print (comes with the LEGO Batman Movie Minifigures Glam Metal Batman). The last guitar mould resembles the iconic Fender Stratocaster, and comes in four versions; a gorgeous purple with gold and white print, a light-aqua with hot-pink and silver print, and a dark-azure with white and hot-pink print all appear in LEGO Friends sets, and the red with black and silver print version comes with the LEGO Minifigures Series 14 Monster Rocker. Plain, unprinted varieties of these guitars are also available.

If you want to get more musical instruments, LEGO customizers offer some other designs as well. BrickForge.com, in particular, has a really good selection of guitars and violins. Below is a picture of my collection of musical instruments from BrickForge.

BrickWarriors.com also has some interesting pieces, like a tribal drum, battle horn, reed pipes, lyre and an ancient Roman horn. I particularly like the reed pipes and the lyre.

The last set of guitars pictured below is from Amazing Armory. I got them a few years ago when they were available in a number of different colors. They are very nice quality, and faithfully replicate pretty much every real world electric guitar variety. Amazing Armory also made a guitar-case, which fits all the guitars nicely. Unfortunately Amazing Armory is no longer in business, but their custom pieces can still be found at resellers.

As you can see, if you want to expand the selection of minifig-size musical instruments at the LEGO Creator Assembly Square music store, or if you want to open another music shop for your minifigures, there are plenty of options. Other items you can put in the music store are vinyl records (printed 2×2 round and square tiles), boom boxes (in three different colors), radios (1×2 printed tiles), music sheets, and posters (printed or stickered tiles).

Hope this list helps you to find some instruments for your minifigs who want to start a band or open a music store. What do you think? Are you planning to expand the LEGO Creator Assembly Square music store, or another music store in your LEGO city? And how about starting a minifig band? Feel free to share your own findings for the best LEGO musical instruments in the comment section below! 😉
