LEGO Ninja Turtles sets alternate builds

In the past LEGO regularly provided alternate building instructions with pretty much every LEGO set, to give more value and stimulate creativity and fun. Unfortunately these days that is rarely the case, except for LEGO Creator and LEGO Technic sets.  However if you visit the LEGO Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles website, you will notice that LEGO provides some fun alternatives to five of the LEGO TMNT sets in the Donnie’s Lab section. So let’s take a look at all the alternate builds as they are quite fun! 😛

LEGO Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Donnie's Lab

#79100 LEGO Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Kraang Lab Escape – this is the smallest of the LEGO TMNT sets, but you can still use the pieces from this set to build a little swamp-boat. Download the PDF instructions to build the boat here: DOWNLOAD

#79100 LEGO Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Alternate Build

#79101 LEGO Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder’s Dragon Bike – you can use the pieces from this set to build a pretty awesome digger bike thingy for Shredder. Download the PDF instructions to build the digger here: DOWNLOAD

#79101 LEGO Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Alternate Build

#79102 LEGO Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Stealth Shell in Pursuit – you can use the pieces from this set to build a three-wheeled and fully armored jail-transport vehicle. Download the PDF instructions to build the vehicle here: DOWNLOAD

#79102 LEGO Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Alternate Build

#79104 LEGO Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles The Shellraiser Street Chase – you can use the pieces from this set to build a really cool hot-rod. This is my favorite alternate build in the series! Download the PDF instructions to build the hot-rod here: DOWNLOAD

Cool, aren’t they? If you don’t yet have any of the LEGO Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sets, you can get them at the Online LEGO Shop. This month you will also get a Splinter minifigure keychain with your purchase, so it is the perfect time to get some LEGO TMNT sets! 🙄

I don’t collect TMNT sets as it is not my favorite theme either, but I would like to have all the Turtles. So far I only have one. TMNT however does have a huge-fan base and I know many people who are very happy with the sets. 🙂

I like the alternate builds. I saw them when I was shopping over the weekend during their double VIP points offer. I was hoping they had alternate build for others themes I collect but didn’t seen any. I downloaded the PDFs but don’t have the sets yet. I plan on getting TMNT sets in May when they offer the Iron Man polybag.

Intersting…But i dont have any sets… Do they have lotr/hobbit alternate builds? Are they good? though some of these builds ARE interesting they seem pretty childish looking… Meh.>>>>>

I do like when LEGO does this, though personally I prefer when they do it with non licensed themes, as most licensed theme alternative builds are non-canon to the source material. My favorite is the swamp boat, as it feels the most unlike what you find in the other sets, and I personally think the most likely to have to potential to exist in the TMNT series universe. Next favorite in desing would be the hot rod, but the set is too expensive and I like the Shellraiser too much to make it.

    • lego trooper 91 April 11, 2013, 9:05 AM

its good you lik the swamp boat the best be cuse its the smallest and you culd get it more easy than any of the others 😉

  • Kimono Jay- MOUTH OF LIGHTNING April 11, 2013, 9:50 AM

Lego trooper: I have all the ninja too! But I have them in NRG form. And I have Kimono Lloyd and Lloyd ZX 🙂 Ninjago is awesome!….anyway, I don’t like the whole idea of destroying your sets to build smaller ones.. 😉

  • Eric at a LEGO a Day April 11, 2013, 3:12 PM

I love this idea. I really think LEGo should get back in the habit of promoting all the other things you can do with LEGO other than building the set, and having just another toy.

    • admin April 11, 2013, 4:16 PM

Eric, yeah, especially I see how some kids actually think that making your own LEGO creations, or modifying or taking apart a LEGO set is almost like heresy. I believe this is the direct result of LEGO sets not including alternate models. I remember LEGO used to have whole books on alternate models, combiner models, etc. The good old days… 🙄

      • Fikko3107 April 12, 2013, 11:59 AM

By golly, I was absent from this site for a few days caused by malfunctioning gadgets, and so many new posts are up!

Being the collector I am, I’ve “collected” them all. And I agree with that heresy part. Growing up with mostly fragile Bionicle does nothing but bolster that fact. However, as far as I know, at least when I’m a kid, no matter how heretic I see it, I couldn’t resist the child-like impulse to take ’em apart and build something from my mind.

And I noticed these instructions were hosted here. Was that legal? If so, it’s time I write a post about some instructional gems…

        • admin April 12, 2013, 12:44 PM

Fikko, I was wondering where you were. I don’t see why the PDF instructions couldn’t be hosted here. It is not like I’m selling them or something. Brickset also downloads and hosts many of the instructions, so do other LEGO fan sites. Although it takes up storage and bandwidth the reason I host it at our own site is to make sure they won’t disappear when LEGO takes them down. 😉

I loved it back when lego gave you instruction for combining different sets! Those were great! Sadly the alternative and combined build things pretty much ended in 2007. 🙁 I was really upset when I started getting the summer sets that year and found that lego had stopped alternative building.

  • darkon April 11, 2013, 3:54 PM

Oh, and Shredder wouldn’t be caught dead driving that tiny drill-bike. 🙂

  • Weenna 1342 May 27, 2013, 6:09 AM
