LEGO sets retiring soon list updated!

Just a bit of an update to let you know that LEGO just added a bunch of sets to their retiring soon list. This means that no more of these sets will be made and once the current stock is out they will be gone. Of course you can still pick them up on the secondary market for higher prices. So if you have any interest in the following LEGO sets I suggest you pick them up before they run out. Below is a sample on what’s new on the retiring soon list, and you can also see the full list here: LEGO Sets Retiring Soon at the Online LEGO Shop. Oh, and shipping is now free every day! 🙂

LEGO STAR WARS SETS RETIRING SOON – there are three LEGO Star Wars sets listed; a couple from the LEGO Star Wars Planets series, and the LEGO Star Wars Endor Rebel Trooper & Imperial Trooper battle-pack. This last one is particularly nice for building up your Star Wars armies, and the minifigs are also great for resale.

LEGO Sets Retiring Soon - Star Wars

LEGO LORD OF THE RINGS SETS RETIRING SOON – two sets are currently listed as retiring soon; the LEGO Lord of the Rings Gandalf Arrives (an iconic set from the first wave of LEGO Lord of the Rings sets) and the hard-to-find LEGO Lord of the Rings Orc Forge. The Orc Forge is a great set if you are looking for brown LEGO elements, and it also has the printed Orc helmets and armor with the white hand of Saruman symbol – these sell really well on the secondary market due to their rarity.

LEGO Sets Retiring Soon - Lord of the Rings

LEGO LEGENDS OF CHIMA SETS RETIRING SOON – LEGO’s handling of Chima still baffles me. After all the initial build-up and claims that it will be better than Ninjago, all I see is dismal sales at retailers and with still no Chima TV Show. In fact LEGO has been including free Chima starter-sets with online orders… I guess they are trying to get rid of them. Anyway, whether you are a Chima fan or not, the line does include some very nice sets and beautifully designed minifigures. Several of them are in the retiring soon section, and they are also on sale! 🙄

LEGO Sets Retiring Soon - Legends of Chima

LEGO FRIENDS SETS RETIRING SOON – unlike Chima, LEGO Friends seems to be doing great. The sets are beautiful and offer a great variety to both young girls and collectors. There is a new wave coming out soon, so a few of the sets from the previous waves are getting retired. See some below, and more at the retiring soon list!

LEGO Sets Retiring Soon - Friends

LEGO DUPLO SETS RETIRING SOON – we don’t cover DUPLO here that often, but the line offers great sets for younger kids, and they also resell really well – with profits often beating regular LEGO sets. There are three sets on the retiring soon list. The LEGO DUPLO Train Starter Set looks particularly good for both play and resale.

LEGO Sets Retiring Soon - DUPLO

OTHER LEGO SETS RETIRING SOON – there are some other LEGO sets on the list that are worthy to pay attention to. The LEGO Creator Apple Tree House has been a very popular set and it is very nice. LEGO Minifigures Series 9 is retiring, so if you want to get them for yourself or for resale this is your last chance. Also, the LEGO Super Heroes Captain America Avenging Cycle is getting retired.

LEGO Sets Retiring Soon - Other LEGO Sets

There are some other odds and ends on the list, and as I mentioned you can check them all out at: LEGO Sets Retiring Soon at the Online LEGO Shop. I don’t always write a full post when sets make it to this list, but I have added a link at the right-hand side-bar for your convenience. It is worth checking on it once a week or so.

Yeah, I noticed this. It’s somewhat odd to me.

    • ninja of stealth June 26, 2013, 12:15 PM

as you can see on http://www.lego.com/ they are really trying to advertise LEGO Chima very interesting no?

  • Noahnace10 June 26, 2013, 10:13 AM

As soon as I saw Gandalf Arrives on the list, I was like, “oh no! Not The Lord of the Rings sets!” Luckily it’s just two sets though, both of which I own. Anyways, LEGO is rushing. I mean those Chima sets just came out a few months ago. It’s pretty odd that they advertised like crazy for Chima (once everything on the LEGO.com home page had to do with Chima!), but it isn’t very popular, and they did very little advertising for Friends, yet that’s very popular. Weird… 😕

BTW I got LEGOLOTR Wii at Target for $20 a few days ago. It’s really fun! 😛

    • Meneldur son of Garamar June 26, 2013, 11:18 AM

      Lucky! 😀

    • ninja of stealth June 26, 2013, 12:14 PM

$20.00 that’s insane! very lucky! like I said bye bye chima!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🙂 (no offence to you chima likers!)

    • admin June 26, 2013, 3:14 PM

I guess they are cutting their losses short, which is always a good idea. Rather than pushing a theme that is just not working, they can put their attention (and money) on the winners. 😀

  • Eric at a LEGO a Day June 26, 2013, 11:11 AM

That is an interesting list. Shocked to see LotR sets included, and Friends, while older larger sets like the Death Star and B-Wing still breath life. Makes more sense to retire bigger more expensive sets. This is probably the motivation I needed though to finally pick up that little house!

    • Noahnace10 June 26, 2013, 12:54 PM

Yeah, the Death Star has been around for over five years, and some sets on this list have been around for less than five months! Haven’t most of the people who want the Death Star bought it already, and those who haven’t forgot about it already?

    • admin June 26, 2013, 3:15 PM

Yeah, I don’t know how many times I have heard predictions from LEGO investors that the Death Star is just about to get retired. That set will never die! LOL! 🙄

      • Ike June 26, 2013, 5:43 PM

The Death star cannot end! it is the quintessential “big” Lego set

        • Meneldur son of Garamar June 26, 2013, 6:43 PM

Yeah, it’s been in every catalog since it was first released. Did you ever post an article on it way back, Admin?

          • admin June 26, 2013, 7:14 PM

Now I haven’t. I wasn’t blogging when the set first came out, so I kinda missed that…

        • admin June 26, 2013, 7:21 PM

I agree. It is one of the most winning sets LEGO ever made; it satisfied both fans of large sets and those who look for play-features. It also has tons of minifigs. If I could buy only one large SW set it would be the Death Star. 🙂

          • Fikko3107 June 27, 2013, 1:01 AM

However, Rumors has it that the Ewok Village was meant to replace the Death Star, due to it’s similar sizes, so who knows…

            • admin June 27, 2013, 8:25 AM

Eh… I don’t beleive any of those rumors until I actually see it happening. I think LEOG wil sell the Death Star as long as it sells… pretty simple. 😉

              • KnightGrayson77 August 26, 2013, 8:39 PM

I was in the Lego store on August 1st and I asked the Sales Lady that seemed very knowledgeable if the Ewok Village was replacing the Death Star and she said that she hadn’t heard anything about the Death Star but that she was told that the Super Star Destroyer was going away very soon. She said that they just don’t ever sell any of them. It makes sense, I am not a big fan of the SSD. It really doesn’t have any play value and has very few minifigures. I think she said they sold 2 in four years. She said they sell a Death Star about every two weeks. They had 20 DS’s in the back. So I don’t think it is going anywhere. I do think they should update the set, just the minifigures, leave the set the same and keep the package very similar. It is so perfect the way it is.

                • admin August 27, 2013, 11:28 AM

Yes, it is very likely that they will keep the Death Star as long as it sells. It is such a wonderful set. I agree with you though; it would be nice to have an upgrade of the minifigs. 🙂

  • ninja of stealth June 26, 2013, 12:11 PM

PLEASE do not take this as offensive but all I got to say is bye bye chima! when my sister bought the haunted house I saw that it had the chima set in there and I thought! this is interesting so I investigated (yes I was that bored) and I read that it was a gift (no one believed me) but now I know! also on the lord of the rings… that’s a LEGO friends tree house! much different than LOTR!

  • Micho June 26, 2013, 1:46 PM

I just wish that I would run across a stash of Captain America sets for $6.00. After my recent treasure findings it is the only LEGO Avenger that I am missing. Hopefully this weekend.

    • Meneldur son of Garamar June 26, 2013, 6:46 PM

Good luck. I was just at a Walmart and found some Marvel and DC sets though they were still the same price. 😥 Dang! I have zero DC and Marvel though I probably will get the Battle of Smallville. That one’s one of my favorites! 😉 Do you have it, Micho?

      • Micho June 27, 2013, 11:15 AM

No, I don’t have any of the 2nd year sets. Let’s see I have the Quinjet, Hulk’s Breakout, the Batcave, Catwoman Cycle chase, and an Old small Spiderman set from the second movie I think. I’m proactively seeking to find a 50% off deal on Superman Vs. Lex Luthor, Wolverine Vs. deadpool and Magneto, Joker’s Funhouse, pretty much all of the first year sets. Hopefully there are some left on teh shelves after Xmas to see some real discounts,a nd maybe there will be some 2nd year sets as well, I really Love the artic Batman, Spider Cycle with Venom, and the Man of Steel sets, and I also want to get all four turtles and shredder.

  • Macko June 26, 2013, 4:03 PM

Olivia’s Speedboat has been “retiring soon” for 7 months. Wonder if they’re using the list as a marketing tool for some items, like that one. They might have declared it as “retiring soon” and then ramped up production. Either that, or that particular set’s got the curse of Chima; no one will buy one.

    • admin June 26, 2013, 7:20 PM

Macko, my understanding is that sets that make it to this list means that LEGO won’t make any more. Some of these may take a while to sell out depending on the original production numbers, and some sell out really quickly. Even since I wrote this post some on the list are no longer available. So I guess it just means that they made a gazillion speedboats for Olivia and they ain’t selling. I could see that happening. If there was one Friends set in that price range I could pick up, it wouldn’t be the speed-boat. There are other sets much more interesting.

  • Ike June 26, 2013, 5:45 PM

    Good riddance Chima!!

    • Meneldur son of Garamar June 26, 2013, 6:43 PM

LOL! Though I do kind of like the new summer sets…..kind of. 🙄

  • Micho June 27, 2013, 1:38 PM

Is Chima really doing THAT bad? I figured those Speedorz are on the list because they are the equivalent to the Ninja Spinners, those were only produced for like 3 months at a time per series I believe.

    • admin June 27, 2013, 3:23 PM

Micho, we can’t know for sure how Chima is doing unless LEGO tells us, but judging from the fact that LEGO has been throwing in Chima starter sets in every online order, and that the reaction to Chima just here at TBB is pretty dismalcompared to 10,000 comments on some Ninjago posts, plus the fact that store-shelves are always full of Chima sets, I can’t imagine them doing that well. Also, the kids at my martial-arts school who used to constantly talk about Ninjago, never even mention Chima. Sadly, they switched over to completely different toys and games. 🙁

  • NRG kai June 27, 2013, 5:37 PM

nooooooooooooooo not the orc forge i still havent got it yet!! i must have it its soo cool!

    • admin June 28, 2013, 11:47 AM

Yeah, that set is really sweet. 🙂

  • darkon June 27, 2013, 9:45 PM

I remember back in October when I saw the first concept art for Legends of Chima. I had a feeling that it wouldn’t last long. The Crocodiles and the Ravens first seen in November made me think I might be wrong. Unfortunately I cannot recall a single time in my life when I have been wrong. And it looks like I was right again. Lego was trying to ride the success of NinjaGo by creating a theme that they hoped would be equally successful. Unfortunately, they did not succeed. Some people hated Chima because it just wasn’t NinjaGo. I didn’t like it because it was a ThunderCats rip-off. Either way, it’s failing, and there probably won’t be a Wave 3 in January 2014. It’s too bad, I was hoping to get a Queen Krunket minifigure, and some rhinos and bears. 🙁

    • admin June 28, 2013, 11:54 AM

Yeah, looks like with Ninjago coming back next year Chima won’t survive. I think the main issue is those talking animals and the fact that the TV show just ain’t happening. Kids just don’t have the patience to wait months between episodes. As far as talking animals, they may be okay for very little kids, but for LEGO’s target audience of 6-8 year-old boys they are just not cool enough. Definitely not as cool as being a ninja. 🙄

LEGO did a great job with the minifigs though. So much detailing went into them! And I think there could have been some hope to save the theme and even make it popular, but with no TV show it is very hard to connect with the story and the chracters. And I also wanted a rhino… 🙁

    • Meneldur son of Garamar June 28, 2013, 8:02 PM

      And maybe a porcupine minifig!

  • darkon June 27, 2013, 9:48 PM

Oh, and the Death Star set has been retiring since 2010. I don’t think it’s actually going anywhere.

  • 3ric July 2, 2013, 5:53 PM

    they are beavers not porcupines
episode 4 of chima is on YOUTUBE !!!!!

    • admin July 2, 2013, 9:19 PM

Yeah, I’m planning to upload it here this weeekend. Just watched it yesterday. 😀

  • 3ric July 6, 2013, 7:22 PM

    pretty good episode eh
the lego lone ranger is also cool. just got the cavalry builder set 2 days ago and it’s pretty rad

  • Got2bereal July 13, 2013, 1:58 PM

Chima is not popular because they advertise the toys before the cartoon gets regular airing. So far there’s only 4 web episodes but it will become a weekly cartoon starting next week. So I would pick up any good retiring Chima set before they get popular.

    • admin July 13, 2013, 2:08 PM

I think the same way; Chima hasn’t been popular because without the TV show the sets don’t make much sense. And yes, stocking you on retiring Chima sets may be a good idea. Although I doubt it will ever get as popular as Ninjago. The whole story is just not as exciting. But still fun.
