LEGO Ghostbusters Firehouse HQ review

The much talked about #75827 LEGO Ghostbusters Firehouse HQ is going to be released tomorrow (January 1st), so this is a good time to review this massive LEGO set. As far as size, with 4,634 pieces this is the third largest LEGO set ever released, after the 5,922 piece #10189 LEGO Taj Mahal from 2008, and the 5,197 piece #10179 LEGO Star Wars UCS Millennium Falcon from 2007. It is surprising to see such a huge set in a theme that is not nearly as popular as Star Wars, or as famous as the Taj Mahal, but I guess LEGO is counting on the new Ghostbusters movie coming in July 2016 to become a hit, or that there are still enough Ghostbusters fans from the ’80s, who are also LEGO fans, and have lots of cash. 🙂

#75827 LEGO Ghostbusters Firehouse

As you can see below, the LEGO Ghostbusters Firehouse HQ opens up like a doll-house, but it is also stacked like the LEGO Modular Buildings, so each floor can be taken off. This can be very useful if you don’t have enough room to display the set in an opened up position, although I have to say that having it opened, gives you the most impressive look, and also the easiest way to play inside.

The inside of the LEGO Ghostbusters Firehouse HQ is full of details. In fact this is my favorite feature of the set. You will learn so much about building various pieces of furniture, unique building techniques, and clever ways to use LEGO pieces. I should mention here that while there are some printed elements, most of the decorations you see are stickers. Also, the LEGO Ideas Ghostbusters Ecto-1 fits inside the building, although you will have to remove or reposition most of the furniture from the first floor. You can see how this is done in the video reviews below.

It is difficult to review such a massive LEGO set only with words and pictures, so I thought to include a couple of excellent video-reviews for you. This way you will get a much better sense of how things look and function. The first video is by Stephen from the BrickShow. I particularly recommend watching the section where the floors are assembled and disassembled, and when Stephen fits the Ecto-1 inside. The second video is the stop-motion build of the set from ArtiFex Creations, walking you step-by-step through the building process – really fun to watch. Both videos are in the player below.

In summary, I would say that the #75827 LEGO Ghostbusters Firehouse Headquarters is definitely the ultimate LEGO set for Ghostbusters fans, although the $350 price-tag will likely turn some people off. Looking at the price-per-piece ratio of 7 cents, this is actually a decent deal, especially with the huge number of dark-red elements, and the great looking minifigures – most of them unique to this set. The building does take up a lot of space (especially when opened), and you will also have to invest about 12 hours to assemble it – so it requires some planning and dedication. But if you like Ghostbusters and LEGO, this is it. It is available at the Online LEGO Shop.

This is such a great set, nice design and good selection of minifigs, combined with the ecto-1 it’s the ultimate ghostbusters toy ever! I have one space left on my lego shelf which is reserved for this bad boy.

I will be adding some details to the interior rooms, maybe some more tiles of the floor and definately some more printed tiles in the kitchen… just to beef it up a bit. Might break open the big bang set i have tucked away to make a living room haha…

I have nothing negative to say about this set except that I my wallet is empty 🙂

    • admin December 31, 2015, 11:38 AM

That’s a really good idea using the Big Bang set to add some more interior décor!

  • Legostuff71 December 31, 2015, 12:53 PM

Poor timing , its right after people just spent a lot of money for Christmas ( people are broke) and I have never received a $349 dolled gift card for LEGO.

    • admin December 31, 2015, 12:57 PM

The set will be around for a while, so if you are interested, you should be able to get it later. Historically LEGO always releases a large wave of new sets in January, including some of the most expensive sets. Why they do this I don’t know, but the model seem to work for them. I hear lots of wallets crying though. 🙂

        Valets? Wallets?

You must treat your valets nicely, or fear the repercussions!

        • admin December 31, 2015, 2:31 PM

LOL! I blame the spell-checker for that one. But yeah, you should treat your valets and wallets well! 🙄

  • rainey December 31, 2015, 1:48 PM

You’ve been a busy, busy building girl, admin!

    • admin December 31, 2015, 1:56 PM

He-he… I didn’t build this one. I just don’t have the money for it. Nor the space. The Brick Bank is enough for me for the first half of the year. Plus I made a few BrickLink orders to do some modifications, so no more toys for me for a while. I’m also not sure if I would have had the attention-span to build such a big set. The biggest I have built have been the modulars, and they take about 5-6 hours. The HQ takes twice as long! I would need a vacation to build that one! 😀

  • VirtualMirage December 31, 2015, 1:52 PM

I will be ordering this along with the modular bank tomorrow (they are my Christmas gifts that couldn’t be available for Christmas Day). I’m hoping I don’t run into a back order issue like I did with the Detective’s Office earlier this year, all because I placed my order around 10am EST instead of earlier.

Any idea as to when the Lego.com store updates in the morning and begins taking orders?

    • admin December 31, 2015, 2:19 PM

All updates start at midnight EST, so yeah, by 10 AM the next day a new set can definitely be on backorder. This is especially true tonight as most people will be staying up late. So yeah, if you can place your order a bit after midnight, that would be your best chance to get the set right away. 🙂

      • VirtualMirage December 31, 2015, 3:29 PM

Excellent! Good to know that is when I can place my order. While I wasn’t planning on staying up for the ball to drop tonight, I much rather stay up to midnight and place my order than have to wake up at 6am and do it.

  • rainey December 31, 2015, 4:14 PM

This is the first time I’ve noticed the traffic signal cantilevered out from the building. That is so very real to the older buildings in the turn of the century cities on the East Coast.

Great attention to details that really tickles me!

    • admin December 31, 2015, 6:59 PM

Interesting you mention that, because if I remember correctly JANG was critical of that feature of the set. Like he didn’t understand what that streetlight was doing there. 😀

  • Strider December 31, 2015, 4:22 PM

As mind bogging-ly beautiful as it is expensive…enough said 😀 .

  • Legostuff71 December 31, 2015, 4:29 PM

My mom told me I got enough Lego sets for CHRISTMAS (7 sets) and that I don’t need anymore . I laughed and told her she doesn’t understand the power of the dark side.

  • LegoMaster99 December 31, 2015, 5:45 PM

    I want it so bad!

  • LegoMaster99 December 31, 2015, 5:48 PM

    Happy New Year’s Eve!

    • admin December 31, 2015, 6:57 PM

Happy New Year to all of you guys too! See ya next year! 😀

  • BLProductions December 31, 2015, 11:20 PM

Definitely a nice set; but also a pain to build on LDD… I’ve built only about 500 pieces of it. 😕 Artifex’s video should help though. But a lot of cool building techniques, nice part usage, and good colors. And not a chance I will get it. 😉
Also, I just got back from seeing Star Wars Ep. VII, and I guess it was okay. Not my favorite SW movie. But I’ll retain my full opinion so as not to disclose spoilers. 🙂

    • admin January 1, 2016, 8:53 AM

Glad you were able to see VII. I will have to see it a few more times (once the DVD is out) to really capture everything, but I really liked Rey. 🙂

      • LegoMaster99 January 1, 2016, 9:44 AM

Me too, I liked Poe also! 😀

I know this is an old thread, but I didn’t know where else to post. And I had to post somewhere because I’m so excited. I FINALLY finished building the GBHQ! OMG!! It took me AGES! It’s the largest set I’ve ever built. I love it. The details are fantastic. It is well worth owning, I don’t regret the purchase at all. I don’t know how long I’ll leave it set up as it takes up a ton of room. But even if I do decide to tear it down, it’s a plus to have just for the variety of bricks involved. I’m running out of space in my small Lego city, but for now it’s staying put.

    • admin September 4, 2018, 8:13 PM

Melanie, great to hear that you were able to get the set and had fun building it! It has so many amazing little details inside! And I agree, even the parts are awesome! All that delicious dark-red! Yum! 😀

BTW, you can always post pretty much anywhere you want. We do see and read each comment whether in an old discussion or new one. 🙂

      • Melanie September 5, 2018, 12:58 AM

Thanks for the reply! That’s good to know. Next time I’ll post in a more recent thread. Although this one seems fitting. I picked up the retired Ecto-1 at Bricks By The Bay this summer. It really completes the GBHQ.

        • admin September 5, 2018, 10:42 PM

I was going to ask if you got the Ecto-1. It fits perfectly into the HQ! 😀
