LEGO Ninjago 2016 summer sets review

We haven’t talked about the recently released LEGO Ninjago sets yet, but that’s because some of them are too awesome, and I wanted to spend a bit more time before writing up a review. There are nine new sets in the new LEGO Ninjago line, and we will take a look at each of them today. 🙂

#70588 LEGO NINJAGO TITANIUM NINJA TUMBLER: This tumbler has such a sweet shape – almost like a white version of a Batman tumbler. If you leave the stickers off, and perhaps change some of the colors, you can have this tumbler fit into any space or fantasy theme! And it also comes with some nice play-features. The only thing that’s a bit weird is the long Technic axe at the back, but that could easily be changed out to a shorter version. Here is the official description: A Nindroid has strapped on his jetpack and is targeting the Titanium Ninja Tumbler, so get ready to fight back! Reveal and fire the Titanium Ninja Tumbler’s hidden spring-loaded missiles and detach Zane’s flyer to take the conflict to the sky. Evade the Nindroids’ stud shooter and Techno-Blade attacks, then capture one of these dangerous villains in the TNT’s prison! Includes 3 minifigures: Zane and 2 Nindroids. 342 pieces. Price: $29.99 – BUY HERE

#70589 LEGO NINJAGO ROCK RAIDER: While we have seen similar vehicles in LEGO Ninjago before, this one has fun suspension! And it is also armed to the teeth. Here is the official description: This mighty vehicle’s offroader wheels and suspension means it can power across the roughest terrain. When you get the Stone Army’s base camp in your sights, fire the 6-stud rapid shooter and detach Lil’ Nelson’s turret. Dodge the base camp’s disc shooter. Spin the Rock Roader’s dangerous rear driller and beware of the Stone Army warriors’ Elemental Blade and stud-shooting crossbow. Then, attach the spinning driller to the front of the Rock Roader to smash their base camp and drive away victorious! Includes 4 minifigures: Cole RX (with a special outfit and hood), Lil’ Nelson with a hood, a Stone Swordsman and a Stone Scout. 406 pieces. Price: $39.99 – BUY HERE

#70590 LEGO NINJAGO AIRJITZU BATTLE GROUNDS: We haven’t seen a battle ground set for quite some time, so this set is a nice surprise. And I always loved those beautifully printed windows! Here is the official description: Join Airjitzu Lloyd and Airjitzu Nya in the practice arena to help them train for their battle against Master Yang, the original Airjitzu master. Choose from a variety of cool training weapons and try out new moves on the Ghost Students. Dodge the obstacles and then detach the Airjitzu launchers, pull the rip cord and send a ninja hero spinning into an aerial battle against Master Yang. The harder you pull, the faster they will spin! Includes 5 minifigures: Airjitzu Lloyd and Airjitzu Nya, Master Yang, Ghost Student Chris and Ghost Student Martin. 666 pieces. Price: $59.99 – BUY HERE

#70591 LEGO NINJAGO KRYPTARIUM PRISON BREAKOUT: This set is quite lackluster, however it does include an exclusive Captain Soto minifigure in prison garb. Unless you really want him though, I would choose one of the more interesting sets. Here is the official description: Zane has been unfairly arrested and imprisoned along with real bad guys Captain Soto and the Giant Stone Warrior. Sneak past the prison guard and the security camera to enter Kryptarium Prison. Launch the bread roll with the table catapult to start a food fight—and look out for the hidden treasure map and shuriken! Overpower the 4-armed Giant Stone Warrior and then it’s time make a quick escape. Turn the telephone to explode a cell door or shift the toilet to bust out through the other cell! Includes 5 minifigures: Zane in prison outfit, Kai in Skybound outfit, Giant Stone Warrior with 4 arms and prison outfit, Captain Soto with prison outfit and a prison guard. 207 pieces. Price: $19.99 – BUY HERE

#70592 LEGO NINJAGO SALVAGE M.E.C.: This set has been much talked about since the first images appeared. The colors are really great, and the windshield sort of makes the mech look like a diver. I also appreciate the chunky legs and the graphics (even though I normally don’t like stickers). If you like LEGO Ninjago mechs, or mechs in general, this is a great set to get. Here is the official description: Place Ronin in the opening cockpit of his mech and get ready for battle. With powerful weapons and a special compartment for storing stolen items, it’s the ultimate bounty hunting machine. Fire the golden bow’s spring-loaded shooter and dodge the Skulkin mech’s attacks with its silver dark blades. Unleash the net-stud shooter to trap the Skulkin warriors and then detach the skateboard or flyer to escape with the loot! Includes 4 minifigures: Ronin with special M.E.C. outfit, Nya with Skybound outfit, Krazi and Frakjaw. 439 pieces. Price: $39.99 – BUY HERE

#70593 LEGO NINJAGO GREEN NRG DRAGON: Another beautiful Ninjago dragon! I particularly like this one because of the green color-scheme, which will make this LEGO look great in any LEGO Castle or fantasy themes. Nice catapult too! Here is the official description: Place Green Ninja Lloyd on the saddle, grab the chain reins and launch into the air. Flap the Green NRG Dragon’s huge wings to fly high and attack the sky pirates’ lookout tower with its snapping mouth and dangerous talons. Swerve through the air to avoid shots from the pirates’ mobile catapult and fire back with the stud shooters in the dragon’s tail. Team up with Ghost Cole to triumph over Battle Doubloon and his crewmates and claim the Djinn Blade! Includes 5 minifigures: Lloyd in Skybound outfit, Ghost Cole in Skybound outfit, Bucko, Cyren and Battle Doubloon. 567 pieces. Price: $49.99 – BUY HERE

#70594 LEGO NINJAGO LIGHTHOUSE SIEGE: This is the largest building in the summer wave of LEGO Ninjago sets, and it follows a similar pattern as the beautiful #70151 LEGO Ninjago Temple of Airjitzu, with a cave at the bottom. Nice looking set, good play-features, and a good selection of minifigs. Here is the official description: Jay and Nya are seeking refuge in the lighthouse and are setting up loads of traps ready for an attack by the sky pirates. Dodge the rapid-fire shots from the pirates’ jet. Activate the entrance steps’ trap function to send invaders tumbling straight into the prison below. Show your ninja parkour skills to climb up and down the walls or slide down the pipe into combat with the enemy. Tip dynamite on the sky pirates, battle Nadakhan for the Djinn Blade and claim victory! Includes 7 minifigures: Nya and Jay in Skybound outfits, Echo Zane, Battle Clancee, Nadakhan, Battle Flintlocke, Sqiffy, plus Tai-D robot. 767 pieces. Price: $69.99 – BUY HERE

#70595 LEGO NINJAGO ULTRA STEALTH RAIDER: This is the set Ninjago fans were eagerly waiting for! A brand new, updated and upgraded Ultra Sonic Raider! Make sure you check out all the transforming functions in the video-review below, because they are exceptionally great! I also think that including Chen’s big chair is very funny. Here is the official description: The Super Sonic Raider has been reinvented to become the Ultra Stealth Raider and is ready to take on Master Yang, Master Chen and Eyezorai. Jump into the cockpits with the ninja heroes and speed into battle. Swerve the snapping jaw and spring-loaded shooters of the Chenosaurus. Fire back with the awesome tank’s twin 6-stud rapid shooters and 2 spring-loaded shooters, then split it into a helijet, a huge bike and 2 tread bikes to ambush the enemy. Detach the golden ninja weapons for one-on-one battles and grab Master Yang’s Aeroblade to claim victory! Includes 7 minifigures: Cole, Zane, Jay, Kai, Master Chen, Eyezorai and Master Yang. 1093 pieces. Price: $99.99 – BUY HERE

#70596 LEGO NINJAGO SAMURAI X CAVE CHAOS: Okay, this is the set that I really wanted to talk about. In fact, I’m surprised that there isn’t more discussion about this set, as in many ways it is revolutionary. First of all, it looks better than the #76052 LEGO Batman Classic TV Series Batcave, as far as super-secret, fully decked out, high-tech caves go. I think Batman would be very jealous. There are so many neat details and functions of this set that can only be appreciated by building it. The inventor launchpad is one of the most brilliant things I have ever seen in LEGO. Make sure you check out the video-review below to see how it works. Here is the official description: Build a jet plane at the hi-tech inventor launchpad, but beware—old enemies Pythor, General Kozu, a Stone Army Swordsman and General Cryptor are breaking in and trying to steal all the samurai vehicles! Attack with the Samurai X mech and trap the invaders in the laser prison. Then zoom off on the powerful Samurai X bike or in the awesome jet that you’ve built! Includes 8 minifigures: Nya, Lloyd, Jay, Master Wu, Pythor, General Kozu, a Stone Army Swordsman and General Cryptor. 1253 pieces. Price: $119.99 – BUY HERE

It is amazing that after five years LEGO Ninjago designers are still going so strong, churning out amazing sets for each release. The pleasing Asian-style designs mixed with fantasy elements create a really nice combination. I also like the color choices in the Ninjago line-up. They are more unique and interesting than in LEGO Nexo Knights (which only has two color-schemes), yet still look cohesive. The play-features very interesting as well, and building Ninjago sets is always a pleasure. Personally I would happily pick a Ninjago set over LEGO Star Wars or LEGO Super Heroes. You can find all the sets at the LEGO Ninjago section of the Online LEGO Shop.

You are right! That cave is rad! I just watched the review video. How the whole launchpad functions is awesome. Would love to see a whole assembly line of those!

  • DX ZX KENDO NRG KIMONO TECHNO JUNGLE JAY-MOUTH OF LIGHTNING (seriously I have a mouth of lightning) September 14, 2016, 5:43 PM

So do all their old enemies break out of some prison or something? Haven’t watched since the nindroid season 😛

    • Håkan September 14, 2016, 8:04 PM

      Sounds like Arkham Asylum!

    • admin September 14, 2016, 8:28 PM

It’s a bit hard to keep up as the seasons and episodes are all so stretched out. I normally just catch up with the stories from the DVD. I’m not going to spoil it for you. 😉

Based on just the sets alone, that seems to be the case. I’m guessing it’s a “greatest hits” wave to close out the series. The “collect the weapons” gimmick that has been prevalent throughout Ninjago follows the pattern, each one represents one of the previous villain groups.

  • BLProductions September 14, 2016, 7:41 PM

I’m torn this year in Ninjago. Every set I want comes with Zane, and I don’t want a lot of Zanes (I already have 2). In this wave, it’s the Titanium Tumbler, Kryptarium Breakout, and maybe (if my brothers help pay) the Ultra Stealth Raider. I also really like the Raid Zeppelin from the spring wave. Based on Kryptarium’s poorness and the Raider’s price, it really comes down to Tumbler vs. Zeppelin, and I can’t decide which to get. I can’t get both …yet. 😕
The Samurai X Cave is definitely very cool. I’m doubtful that LEGO will do something like the jet-mod function again, but perhaps if this set sells well, they will do it in another set.
Also, since Lil’ Nelson is in an actual Ninjago set, can we suppose that we will see more of him in the episodes?

Funny, you mention that! I have been also really liking Zane’s stuff too! BTW, I read yesterday that Barnes & Noble has 50% off on Ninjago sets. They don’t have all the new sets, but they do have a good selection. The discount only works at physical stores (not online), so if you have one nearby, you may want to check it out. I was so excited about it, only to learn that the only B&N we had in town closed down. 😥

      • BLProductions September 15, 2016, 4:04 PM

Ah, sorry to hear your B&N is closed. 🙁
50% off Ninjago sounds great, and my nearest store may actually have the newer sets (they sometimes do), but my parents wouldn’t let me waste time going there even if the LEGO was free. It’s too close to our trip to Disney in October, which is usually our fall LEGO Store visit. And my parents are also cracking down on me to get my college stuff going. Anything LEGO is practically off-limits now. 🙁 Not that it stops me….
Also: http://brickset.com/article/23536/21307-caterham-seven-620r-revealed That is a pretty sweet car. Looks pretty accurate to the real one, and it has quite a few 2016 new parts on it as well. 🙂 Those cones, if that’s what those red things are, look undersized, though.

        • admin September 15, 2016, 5:04 PM

We will talk about the Caterham tomorrow, so hold your thoughts. 😉

  • Sith015 September 14, 2016, 8:51 PM

Finally some Ninjago news! Really like the Tumbler and the cave!

  • VaderFan2187 February 26, 2017, 3:59 AM

Is it disturbing how the Airjitzu Temple set (a ghost one) has 666 pieces? Lol.

    • admin February 26, 2017, 10:35 AM

LOL! I haven’t thought of that! Good point! 😈
