The Monster Series by The Brick Show

One of my favorite LEGO builders is Tyler Clites (a.k.a. Legohaulic). Tyler is particularly well known for his very expressive brick-built LEGO characters and beautiful spaceships (see his flickr gallery). Recently, Tyler teamed up with The Brick Show to produce a video-series making funny little brick-built characters. They are somewhat similar to the now discontinued LEGO Mixels line, but also have their own uniqueness. 🙂

The episodes are called the Monster Series, and they are posted on The Brick Show’s YouTube channel. In each video, Tyler introduced a new character, and then shows how to build them with step-by-step instructions. The videos are funny, and suitable for young children. Most of the monsters have moving eyes, or mouth, which makes them very expressive. And Tyler has a name for each of them. In the video-player below, you can find all the episodes released so far. Enjoy!

The Monster Series characters use basic LEGO elements, so most LEGO fans should be able to build them without difficulty. Tyler also encourages viewers to mix up the colors and substitute pieces as necessary. After all, there are no hard and fast rules for building monsters. If you have pieces from the LEGO Mixels collection, or you own any of the LEGO Classic sets you are definitely well-stocked for these projects.

It is nice to see skilled LEGO fans reaching out to the younger generation through projects like this, and sharing their LEGO building tips and tricks. This video-series is done so well, it could easily be on LEGO’s own channel. So if you have kids around, or if you just want to do a little doodling with LEGO bricks on a lazy day, check out the videos and start building!

What do you think? How do you like this video-series by Tyler and The Brick Show? Did you build any of the monsters yourself? What other kind of tutorials would like to see? Feel free to share your thoughts and discuss in the comment section below! 😉

Tyler is definitely a great builder. But these tutorials are more for younger kids. My understanding is that the main audience of the Brick Show is kids, so it’s definitely appropriate for them, but I would love to see Tyler do a series like this with some more complex techniques aimed at afols.

Yeah, Tyler could definitely do some more advanced tutorials. It might not be most appropriate for the Brick Show, but perhaps someone else could host them, or he could just run his own YouTube channel. It might not be his interest though. Making videos is a lot of work. In this case, Tyler and the Brick Show worked together to make this series.

@brickmaster – those are great ideas and we are working on those. Tyler is part of our team now so expect some really great things from him moving forward. He is super talented. He is currently working on some builds more geared towards advanced builders.

Thanks for the response! Looking forward to see what else Tyler will do! Admin, will you let us know? I don’t directly visit their channel as often.

I’m in touch with Jason (from the Brick Show), so I’m sure he will let me know when the new series gets released. 🙂

These would make a fun birthday party activity. Does he say anywhere which sets he used?

    • Håkan March 26, 2017, 10:43 AM

They appear kinda MOC:ish. I don’t think he has worked with any actual sets, in particular.

If you’d just want a bulk of basic bricks like that, I think the Pick-a-Brick walls at official Lego stores could be relatively good value, though.

They are, but they are so few and far between. 😐

MOC = My Own Construction. Homemade stuff…

Like Håkan said, these models aren’t from a specific set. However if you have any of the LEGO Classic sets, you should be good to go. They have mostly basic pieces and also those printed eyes, which can really make characters come alive. Or if you just have some loose, mostly standard elements, that should work fine too. Tyler encourages using his tutorials as an inspirations. Colors and shapes can be changed. Have fun! 🙂

These are fun. Will there be any more in the series?

    • admin March 26, 2017, 4:38 PM

Jason told me there should be about 20 videos in the Monster series. I will add them to the playlist once they are available. So yeah, more monsters are coming. 😈

What happened to Tyler’s Monster Series? My son loved watching them and now we cant find them anywhere.

Hm… the channel was suspended by YouTube, so those videos got deleted as well. 🙁
