Interview with LEGO Designer Mark Stafford

Last month, LEGO designer Mark Stafford was asked to go to LEGOLAND Malaysia to sign copies of the #75936 LEGO Jurassic Park: T. Rex Rampage set for enthusiastic LEGO fans. As we discussed previously (see links at the end of this post), the #75936 LEGO Jurassic Park: T. Rex Rampage set was designed by Mark, with inspiration from the set coming from other LEGO designers as well. It includes a fantastic and very articulated giant dino, and the iconic Jurassic Park gate with a bunch of different little vignettes representing scenes from the movie. And don’t forget about those awesome minifigs!

While in Asia, Mark was interviewed by YouTube channel Brick Finder from Singapore. He was asked some questions both about the design process of the #75936 LEGO Jurassic Park: T. Rex Rampage set and his work at LEGO in general (including killing the color teal and introducing olive-green). Mark said he really enjoyed this interview and appreciated that he was able to talk about his work for an hour. The interview is expertly edited by Brick Finder for a very interesting 20-minute documentary. Watch below.

That was really insightful, isn’t it? It’s awesome to hear some many interesting little details about the design process, and all the different types of decisions LEGO designers have to make, and challenges they face in their work. Mark is a fantastic designer, with lots of great sets under his belt (see his portfolio here). I particularly appreciated his thoughts on the importance of being flexible and non-attached in such a creative line of work.

Mark and Jamie are my favorite designers. Thanks for sharing the interview. I wouldn’t have found it on my own as I don’t know this channel.

Mark is awesome. And his enthusiasm for spaceships and dinosaurs is contagious. And I’m very impressed by the dino as he is moving it around. So flexible!

Thanks for the interview, I wish all designers have interviews like this. I love listening to their insights. They should have a podcast!

I love interviews like this. Just let the designer talk without interrupting them too much. The questions were good and they let Mark talk about spaceships and dinosaurs. I didn’t know he introduced olive green, so that was cool too.

Yeah, he killed teal, kept purple, and introduced olive-green! 😀

I just wanted to point out that these types of interviews are also great for kids. They like to see what it takes to get a certain job and what the job looks like.
