LEGO Legends of Chima… reloaded

Some of my favorite LEGO creations are the ones that use LEGO pieces that most people would consider awkward or useless, and make something wonderful out of it. Some recent LEGO elements that fall into this category are from the new LEGO Legends of Chima theme. Specifically the Speedorz game bike parts. They are nicely made and printed, but they are also criticized for being too specialized and not being good for much else then their original purpose… not a good thing for a construction-toy element.

LEGO Legends of Chima Speedor Bikes

Enter LEGO fan Karf Oohlu, whom you can always count on to bring out the funny and quirky goodness of the strangest LEGO parts. Below are a couple of examples of using the LEGO Legends of Chima bike parts from the Speedorz game, and find out they are not so bad after all…

Here is a little off-road 4WD vehicle using the front of the croc-bike from the #70103 LEGO Legends of Chima Speedorz Boulder Bowling set. Pretty sweet, huh? Mean looking too! I would love to have a bunch of these little buggers to race around! The vehicle is operated by a red LEGO frog, a re-occurring hero of Karf Oohlu’s creations. 😀

The second vehicle also uses a Speedorz bike-cover (from the #70102 LEGO Legends of Chima Speedorz CHI Waterfall set), and a couple of the Speedorz wheel-assemblies too. The Dump Bike – as it is named – is kind of based on the rickshaws, and other two wheeled contraptions you often see in India and other Asian countries. But this little guy may just have too much to balance on just two wheels… 🙄

I think these look great. I also think there a little too specialized, but more due to the large amounts of detailed printing (there are ways to remove this tough, if desired.) Mostly due to the desire to make it have a matching color scheme. Personally, I think the bike cover might look good as knee/ leg armor on BIONICLE and more Technic based Hero Factory creations. They could also be used as heads for larger versions of the animals they represent (possibly robotic versions).

Eye! there are many possibilities there are!

I like those creations! Admittedly the parts are specialized but that there is always something unexpected possible with enough creativity. I’m just glad for more PRINTED specialty pieces, and I really hope that this starts a trend of more PRINTED and LESS stickers. I HATE stickers and I’m finding my self often choosing which sets I buy based on the absence of stickers. (ideally — NO stickers, OK – a few stickers, bad – lots of stickers).

      i hate stickers too 😡

Peter, yeah, same here; can’t stand stickers. Especially when according to the instructions they have to be applied over multiple parts! That basically forces us to never take apart the model as it will ruin the sticker – like the front of the Maersk Train. 😥

hate em if ya mess up you mess it all up if you get it crocked you feel like an idiot

      • gid617 February 4, 2013, 6:52 AM

Call me cray, but I actually don’t mind stickers… because usually, for one thing, by the time I’m ready to take it apart, I’m not interested in keeping the stickers nice. I’m not quite sure whether I prefer stickers or printed parts, since a printed part means it’s harder to use the piece for something else. 😉

Generally, if it is something like graffiti, I think stickers are best, as you can easily keep them off it you want a clean city, or use on whatever piece you choose. If its an important detail however, especially if it is on a fairly common part, most prefer printing.

          • gid617 February 4, 2013, 3:21 PM

Yeah, for example I certainly prefer the printing on the 1×4 brown tiles with the wood pattern than I would stickers. But as long as we’re talking license plate numbers, stickers are fine with me. And then again, I’m much more likely to use a non printed 1×2 tile than one with a license plate number just because of the fact that I usually build castle. So I’m at least a little bit biased on what I would like stickered and what I would rather have printed.
