LEGO Disney Princess sets coming!

Rumors of a LEGO Disney Princess line has been circulating for quite some time now, but this is the first time we can actually see images, thanks to the Canadian Wal-Mart website that posted them early. I have to say that the sets are absolutely lovely, and – as suspected previously – use LEGO Friends style mini-dolls. I’m positive that these will be a big hit with little girls, and also collectors who will love the unique new elements and nice colors. So let’s take a look at the 2014 LEGO Disney Princess sets! 🙂

These look pretty good! Me being a guy and all, I think that I probably won’t be buying these BUT, I do like the Rapunzel and Merida sets.

  • Steven November 21, 2013, 11:19 AM

These will fly off the shelves world wide no doubt. They finally got it right with the Friends line and now are going to capitalize. Lets hope they don’t try to over stimulate the female market. Well done.

  • Strider November 21, 2013, 11:35 AM

Unexpected but not surprising, seeing as Legos relation with Disney is so close, and it makes sense to expand on the whole, “Girl LEGO,” thing. I won’t be buying any, but did you notice the music sheet in the first Ariel set? I’m counting on my little sister to get that so I can trade her for it ;). Also that picture of Merida makes her look crazy. Or out of character. Why is it too late to make stuff like Lego back to the future, yet they’re resurrecting Ariel and her 19-somethin’ movie.

    • admin November 21, 2013, 4:19 PM

Strider, the story of the Little Mermaid is a classic – even in the Disney version, and not to speak of the original. Back to the Future was a great movie, but it nowhere near has the universal appeal and longevity of the Little Mermaid. And there is the Back to the Future DeLorean set already. 😉

      • Strider November 21, 2013, 5:38 PM

Yeah, I guess Little Mermaid has more of a background and it is a classic. And I know about the DeLorean but that was just one set.

  • Chris of Yoda Archives November 21, 2013, 11:43 AM

I think these will sell well. I like Ariel’s tail better than the one from the LEGO minifigs.

    • Strider November 21, 2013, 12:35 PM

I think Ariels tail is better too. Also, do you like Doctor Who? Just wondering because your picture looks just like one of the Cybermen.

      • Chris of Yoda Archives November 22, 2013, 1:17 AM

I’m a big Doctor Who fan. I changed my avatar because of the 50th anniversary this weekend. The Cyberman is a Character Building mini-fig.

  • ninja of stealth November 21, 2013, 12:41 PM

yeah I agree with all of you. these sets are great for little girls and will have to trouble selling! but let me be the first to say, that LEGO friends minifig things for LEGO friends are FREAKY! 😯

  • Antoinette November 21, 2013, 12:49 PM

I am very excited for these sets. I do wish Ariel was in the correct dress for the Magic Kiss set, but that’s the only problem I have. (Only because I love that movie so much :P) I can’t wait for all of the interesting pieces, and this means more options for the Friends minidolls. And more men!

I wish more guys would be open to getting the “girly” sets. The pieces will inspire you more than you would think. I was building before the Friends sets came out, but not very much. When they came out, I couldn’t stop admiring all of the details and incorporating them into my own MOCs.

I buy sets that are “meant” for boys, so why should the purple box stop the guys? Lego is Lego, no matter the color of the box.

    • Strider November 21, 2013, 1:35 PM

But we’re male…it’s against nature…I know the pieces are useful but I would never buy a disney princess set. I think guys are more opposed to girly stuff then girls are to guyish stuff. If I want pieces to inspire me I can get them from many other sets then girl ones.

    • LK2 November 21, 2013, 2:03 PM

Problem is that it is our society that makes girls play with pink dolls and boys with blue knights. I think I fit the mold, but my sister does not. Friends === horrible. Ninjago === Fantastic. Even City is wayyyyyyyyyyyyy better than Friends. My sister hates friends even more than me. And she likes Castle 😉
is HTML tag, not sure if it works here, so if it does not, don’t think I’m weird.

      • LK2 November 21, 2013, 2:03 PM

        It does.
        And

      • Rusty Patti November 21, 2013, 2:11 PM

And many stores even “conveniently” have girl and boy aisles for toys. Not labeled as such but product placement makes it clear that girls who venture into the regular LEGO aisle are “weird.”

        • admin November 21, 2013, 4:23 PM

Rusty, hm… I’m a girl, and I have been “venturing into the LEGO aisle” all my life, and I have never once felt uncomfortable being there. Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Target, TRU, all have their LEGO aisles completely gender-neutral. At least in my area. 😉

          • Rusty Patti November 21, 2013, 5:03 PM

In my neck of the woods Walmart, K Mart, & Target keep the “regular” and Friends LEGO on separate aisles. Friends are in the same aisle with other pink girl toys.

And I’m not saying there are no girls who feel comfortable going into the LEGO aisle. I have never had problems ignoring gender stereotypes but as a child I had to fight for LEGO, Lincoln Logs, and toy soldiers for Christmas and birthday presents. Everyone wanted to put a doll in my hands.

The problem is that kids need choices and by marketing specifically to gender stereotypes we’re letting LEGO and other toy companies to limit their choices.

It shouldn’t be a big deal for girls to ignore princess stuff and grab the Star Wars or Hobbit sets but when you put them in different aisles and reinforce the stereotypes in advertising it becomes a big deal.

            • Strider November 21, 2013, 5:53 PM

I do agree that kids should have choices though.

            • admin November 21, 2013, 6:56 PM

Rusty, I would say that marketing and limiting choices are completely different things. Companies always have a target market, but it doesn’t mean others can’t buy their products. In fact, marketing to a very specific group is done on purpose. It has nothing to do with forcing people into anything. It has to do with what works best in marketing; which is always a very specific message, to a very specific target group, awakening a very specific emotion. Ironically this is what sells the most products. 🙄

Apple products are marketed to young, hip, smart people. So everybody who feels young, hip and smart (even if they aren’t) or would like to feel that way, will buy them. The most popular cars are always marketed to a very narrow group; for example college-age kids who love surfing and other rugged outdoors activities. Who buys those cars? Not college-age kids (what college-kid can afford a new car?), but middle-aged women! Why? Because they like the image and lifestyle the ads convey.

Marketing is a brilliant and fascinating art actually, and many books have been written on the subject. It also has a dark side and unfortunate side-effects, but that’s just part of life; everything always has two sides. 😉

              • ninja of stealth November 23, 2013, 1:00 PM

hey, I just say spread the LEGOs out so more people can see them.

      • Strider November 21, 2013, 5:42 PM

Personally, I wouldn’t have it any other way. If a girl wants a knight to play with she can have one but her natural inclination usually isn’t that. I never wanted to play with girl toys and my sisters woukd never get Ninjago or something like that.

        • LK2 November 22, 2013, 5:40 AM

My sister loves Castle as I mentioned before hand. She liked Pirates 2009, though she only played with sets. She really likes LEGO sets with realistic looking animals (City Bear, Lone Ranger Horses etc.).

    • ninja of stealth November 22, 2013, 12:52 PM

no “girly” sets for me! seriously, I still find these freaky but promising to little girls! if I where a little girl I’d be saying “so rad!” and “fist bump!” (probably not 🙄 )

  • Rusty Patti November 21, 2013, 12:59 PM

Pass. No, not just pass but run away screaming.
These little girls have something to say about all the princess stuff.

    • LK2 November 21, 2013, 2:04 PM

      Totally agree

      • Strider November 21, 2013, 5:50 PM

I am all for making girls confident. But if one day all the men just slept in things would go haywire really fast. The two genders are made to work together so saying stuff like, “GIRLS are the makers of the future,” or, “Girls can’t do anything right,” is wrong. I don’t think girls don’t have a big part in the world, they serve a purpose just as big as boys. But they are made for different things. Do boys say that they want to stay home and make the meals and take care of the kids? Men do girls a service by working and inventing. There not trying to control them ;).

        • Antoinette November 21, 2013, 7:07 PM

Strider, what is a horrible thing to say. Men AND women are meant to do anything they want to do. People claim cooking is feminine. Perhaps you can tell that to all the male chefs in the world?

          • admin November 21, 2013, 8:01 PM

My brother is a Marine. He is also an excellent cook (and baker!) and cooks on a regular basis. He was also a stay-at-home dad when his first son was born, because his wife had a better job with better health-insurance for the family (now they have four children and both parents work). Doing what is necessary – that is the way of any real real man or woman. My Dad (an architect) makes the best breakfast in the world, while my Mom (a mechanical-engineer) is an excellent cook. It is all about cooperation between people, doing what they love, what they are best at, and what is needed in any given circumstance. It is about working together and using our talents to serve others in our family and community. My grandpa always said that only a lazy person doesn’t know how to cook… this includes both men and women. 😉

            • Rusty Patti November 22, 2013, 12:23 PM

“It is all about cooperation between people, doing what they love, what they are best at, and what is needed in any given circumstance. ”

              Very well said.

        • Rose November 21, 2013, 9:45 PM

Ha, “go haywire”? Seriously. Guys have been running things for a long time. Do you really think it’s going great?

This type of thinking is exactly why the pink ghetto of Friends and princesses hurt girls and women. They are being told – go play with that stuff why the mens go do real work.

Men and women are not “made for different things.” You should really try joining the 21st century.

          • Antoinette November 21, 2013, 10:22 PM

I agree with most of what you said Rose, and this isn’t directed at only you.

But Lego Friends and other “girly” sets get girls to build. And that’s the important part. If pink, blue, or polka dot Lego gets girls to build, I don’t really care how it’s presented.

The sets are taken from the Disney movies, so if people are angry about the sets, then maybe they shouldn’t let their children watch the movies. It isn’t Lego’s fault that the movies are appealing to children.

Some girls like princesses, and some girls like other things too. Friends sets do show girls interested in sports, animals, and science as well as “typical” girly things like fashion and cooking. They made a school for the Friends that includes an art room, a science classroom, and a basketball hoop outside. I think all of that is pretty darn important. By the way, that set is mostly blue and yellow.

Pink and purple Lego sets aren’t hurting women or girls, people taking this out of proportion are.

            • LK2 November 22, 2013, 5:45 AM

We obviously have different opinions. I think I have said that I hate Friends. And this is even worse!!!!!
If girls like this, buy it. It will allow LEGO to keep making Ninjago and the other great stuff. I will never buy one of these. Should someone give it too me……. I’d throw it in the bin.

              • Strider November 22, 2013, 9:33 AM

I am not saying I don’t respect women or that cooking is feminin. What I meant when I said that is the fact that women are trying to be like men but men aren’t really trying to be like women. Being a Christian my viewpoints differ. But I understand that taking this any further is un-necessary as nobody is going to change. As for how about joining the 21st century, what exactly does that mean? As in how about changing the way people acted before this century and brought us to such a great height? Not all women can do the same things as men and even though many many can we need them to raise kids so that they can build the future. Tht is my viewpoint and I do not look down at or bear a grudge with those who disagree.

                • Strider November 22, 2013, 9:35 AM

                  And I can cook too.

                  • Strider November 22, 2013, 9:43 AM

Sorry but I must answer one more thing you said in your comment just to make myself perfectly clear. You said that the girls are being told to play with that stuff, “while men go do the real work.” My mom has eight kids, and even with us helping her out, she would tell you anyday that her work is all too real. If we want to progress in the future we need more good people and how will we raise them if the moms and dads are always working? Females have been shown to be very good mothers and while Dads are meant to be as involved as possible, to me the roles of men and women are both clearly laid out and both real work.

                    • ninja of stealth November 22, 2013, 12:56 PM

your mom has eight kids?! She is AWESOME! way to go to your mom! virtual high five!

                • Meneldur November 22, 2013, 11:30 AM

                  I agree Strider.

                  • Meneldur November 22, 2013, 11:31 AM

                    And I’m learning to cook.

                  • Strider November 22, 2013, 1:08 PM

Thanks Meneldur and Ninja of Stealth.

                    • ninja of stealth November 23, 2013, 1:02 PM

                      you’re welcome Strider 😉

                • Rusty Patti November 22, 2013, 12:21 PM

“What I meant when I said that is the fact that women are trying to be like men but men aren’t really trying to be like women.”

This is where we disagree – girls and women who avoid the pink princess toys and go for Star Wars, Hobbit, and just plain loose brick building are NOT “trying to be like men”. They’re building with LEGO the way that suits them.

In the adult world women who go into the STEM fields are NOT “trying to be like men”. They’re working in a field they love despite anachronistic thinking that would rather have them being stay at home moms.

There is nothing wrong with being a stay at home mom (or dad) if that’s what someone wants to do.

What is wrong is subtly limiting the choices of boys and girls by labeling toys or fields “girls” or “boys” only through marketing.

                  • Strider November 22, 2013, 1:06 PM

I believe those fields are for men to work. I do not believe women are lower then men or serve a purpose less great. I should have said, “more women act like men by putting themselves in mens positions then men put themselves in womens positions.” There is some overlap and things like cooking and stuff are totally for everyone. But when it comes down to it I believe men are made for the more physical work. Men are physically stronger naturally and more active and vigourous by nature. Even though there are hundreds and thousands of super active girks like that girls still mature emotionally faster making them better suited for preparing to become moms. Men and woman are so clearly different so it would make sense they were intended for different tasks. And it’s fine to play with any toy I think, that is kind of a different issue, toys are all about make believe and fun.

                    • admin November 22, 2013, 1:58 PM

I think this whole conversation beautifully demonstares how peoples’ core paradigms fundamentally effect their belief system about everything (including such an innocent subject as toys). Someone who believes that God sent them here with specific duties governed by very specific rules will approach any subject differently than a person who believes our ancestors were monkeys, or someone who believe we are eternal free spirits who came here to explore and learn. I don’t think there is anything wrong with any of those paradigms, as long as we don’t try to enforce it on each other, or harm others in any way. We all see the world through colored glasses; non of us can see everything objectively as our senses of perception are imperfect. If a belief system empowers someone good for them, if not, there are plenty of others to choose from. 😉

                  • admin November 22, 2013, 1:12 PM

Well said. Yes, let boys and girls follow their nature and their own inspiration and voice from within. Being honest with ourselves and letting people being honest with themselves has always been the best path. Thanks for pointing this out! 🙂

          • LK2 November 22, 2013, 5:41 AM

Take the words out of my mouth!

          • Strider November 22, 2013, 9:37 AM

And by the way I do think its going great. We’ve gone from nature too cars and iphones.

          • ninja of stealth November 22, 2013, 12:54 PM

this is going “haywire” and off subject. aah! 😯

        • LK2 November 22, 2013, 5:46 AM

Hate to say this, but, this is racist……….
This conversation is going to far. 🙁

          • ninja of stealth November 23, 2013, 1:06 PM

what I say is, if kids like LEGOs… YOU DON’T WANT TO MESS WITH THEM! HIII YAH!!!!! 🙄 in other words if kids like LEGOs its awesome. they can get there minds off of this other stuff that’s happening in the world. 😀 LEGO makes people feel… happy. and stuff 🙂

  • Lorca Strand November 21, 2013, 1:17 PM

#41051 Merida’s Highland Games is definitely going to find itself in my collection. Brave being the only Disney princess movie of taste (to my opinion), I am quite excited to see this in LEGO form. Not to mention the new bear figures and the cookies.

  • Lorca Strand November 21, 2013, 1:18 PM

Also, I don’t remember any cookies being shot in the film. Is this purely LEGO’s own invention?

    • Strider November 21, 2013, 1:38 PM

The whole set and theme of it doesn’t happen. They just took some elements and bunched them up in a ball. (I’ve seen the movie too.)

    • admin November 21, 2013, 4:20 PM

      Cookies fit into anything!

      • Strider November 21, 2013, 5:43 PM

I find they ecspecially fit in my mouth.

        • admin November 21, 2013, 6:33 PM

Yeah, that’s the best way! 😛

        • ninja of stealth November 23, 2013, 1:06 PM

          well said Strider.

      • ninja of stealth November 22, 2013, 12:58 PM

cookies are awesome… leave them alone 😐
        🙄

  • Chi-bacca November 21, 2013, 1:47 PM

I definitely won’t get any of these but the golden bow in the brave set is cool and probably the only thing I like here…… 😀

  • LK2 November 21, 2013, 2:05 PM

Horrible…….. What is LEGO doing? Well, I suppose, if it makes them mone..y Shrug
    I’ll stick to Ninjago

  • YTjedi November 21, 2013, 3:20 PM

My main focus has always been Star Wars, but in recent years I’ve gone into all the Harry Potter, Super Heroes, and any Disney-related sets.

Definitely going to be buying my favorites out of this line. The biggest disappointment for me is the Magical Kiss set doesn’t have a Sebastian. 🙁 Flounder in the other set is great though!

    • Micho November 21, 2013, 6:58 PM

Ditto on the lack of Sebastian

    • Antoinette November 21, 2013, 10:24 PM

I’m hoping he’ll be in a future set, with Scuttle and Max.

      • Micho November 26, 2013, 5:16 PM

Nice.. I hope so as well

  • Carbo November 21, 2013, 3:43 PM

These sets are well done, but being a boy, I won’t want any. I hope that LEGO starts to use those cookies in other sets soon. Also, Admin, did you get my post about the LEGO City 2014 sets?

    • admin November 21, 2013, 4:24 PM

Carbo, yes, I did get yoru post. I just have been out of town. 😉

Well, I guess I will be the first man to say that I will be picking up the two Little Mermaid sets the month they come out!!! I’m married, 31 years old and I love The Little mermaid and LEGO since I was 8… THERE!!! 😀

    • Antoinette November 21, 2013, 7:08 PM

      Thank goodness

    • admin November 21, 2013, 7:45 PM

Micho, good for you! And I’m sure you will not be the only one. Several of these sets are excellent and will appeal to LEGO fans of all ages and genders. Plus, I know you like mermaids. 😛

      • Micho November 26, 2013, 5:14 PM

    Hey There Brick Bloggers.
Could i be a Blogger on your blog?

I would blog ocasionaly, and have my own blog, but don’t blog very often on it, so it would be great to me to join your blog.
    I specialise in Marvel Superheroes.
For example, did you know that no Thor 2 sets were produced because the rights to elf minifigures were given to LOTR/Hobbit?

If you are dubious, Give me three posts as a trial to see if i am good enough for the blog.

    Thanks for reading,
Axel Brickson A.K.A. The Chosen Minifigre.

Welcome to TBB! You can just send in a sample post to my email address (under my profile), and we can go from there. 😉

I was really looking forward to LEGO manufacturing the “Belle chucks Gaston out” play set, but I guess these will do!

    • Strider November 22, 2013, 9:45 AM

      😀

I really hate topics like this…when a LEGO chat escalates to a debate on gender equality. I’m all for gender equality, and if it helps, I will honestly say that I genuinely enjoy Friends sets and Disney Princess movies. Of course, provided you ignore the ill, wrong morals, innuendos and double entederes…

    • admin November 22, 2013, 9:48 AM

Fikko, yeah, topics like this can escalate pretty quickly. I trust our readership that the conversation will remain civilized. LEGO fans are creative, smart, thinking people. 😉

      • Meneldur November 22, 2013, 11:33 AM

Thanks! I can always use more complements!

      • ninja of stealth November 22, 2013, 1:03 PM

I agree with you fikko and you admin. this is a bad conversation we are having here! LEGO is supposed to be happy and creative not doom and gloom. (now I sound like a parent!!!!!! AAH!!)

        • admin November 22, 2013, 1:21 PM

Don’t worry. We are just having a conversation about an important and also touchy subject. Although it is not directly about LEGO, it is connected. Everyone has been very mature about their comments, even on points they don’t agree on. So it is all good. LEGO fans are a great bunch! Thank you all for sharing your opinions while also allowing others to share theirs. 🙂

-voice muffled through paper bag- I am quite ashamed to say that I want a few of those sets…………… ='(
The levels of gold-colored-stuff in those sets are off the charts!! itz amazing!!!

  • Kristina November 26, 2013, 11:38 AM

I must have all of these!

And I bet my son, who is six, will be right beside me building the sets, checking out the new pieces and taking my new animals; just like he did with the hedgehog from the animal series.

    • admin November 26, 2013, 11:48 AM

Yeah, that hedgehog is way too cute! 😛
