LEGO Guardians of the Galaxy sets & more!

To coincide with the recent release of the Guardians of the Galaxy film, LEGO launched three new sets we haven’t talked about much as of yet. Guardians of the Galaxy is like the biggest movie this summer that achieved both critical and financial success. In fact a sequel has been already announced, scheduled for the summer of 2017. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, I recommend you give your local movie-theatre a visit. 🙂

LEGO Guardians of the Galaxy Poster

Even before the movie hit theatres LEGO fans were already excited about the film because excellently made minifig version of the Guardians of the Galaxy trailer by Antonio Toscano. You can check out the trailer below, and there is also a link from the video where you can see both the original trailer and the LEGO version next to each other – which is interesting to see.

Guardians of the Galaxy are not as well-known (well, at least they weren’t before the film’s release) as some of the other Marvel Super Heroes, so below is the descriptions of the main characters from the official LEGO Marvel Super Heroes website as well as the sets they appear in.

LEGO Guardians of the Galaxy

Star-Lord: Born on Earth but drawn to the stars, Peter Quill became the interstellar adventurer known as Star-Lord. Quill acquires an immensely powerful artifact and attracts the attention of those who would use its power to spread chaos and destruction. Equipped with his high-tech blasters, a dependable starship and a mix-tape of music from home, the headstrong Star-Lord must rally an unlikely team of interstellar misfits – Guardians of the Galaxy – for an all-or-nothing attempt to protect the cosmos. Star-Lord appears in the #76019 LEGO Marvel Super Heroes Starblaster Showdown, and the #76021 LEGO Marvel Super Heroes Milano Spaceship Rescue sets.

#76019 LEGO STARBLASTER SHOWDOWN: Help Star-Lord keep the priceless orb safe with the Starblaster! Launch into battle against the Sakaaran’s Necrocraft in the awesome Starblaster and help Star-Lord to escape with the orb! Place the Nova officer in the cockpit and launch into the sky. Fold back the wings for high-speed pursuit mode and then flip them up to activate arrest mode. Use the space blasters and boot thrusters of Star-Lord to outwit the enemy and protect the priceless orb! Includes 3 minifigures with assorted weapons and accessories: Star-Lord, the Sakaaran and a Nova officer. 196 pieces. Price: $19.99 – BUY HERE

#76019 LEGO Guardians of the Galaxy

Groot: The tree-like Groot hails from a world designated only as “X,” which is populated by sentient plants. At times playful and childlike, Groot makes up for his limited vocabulary with his ability to manipulate and grow his giant bark-covered form as needed – skills he has long used to aid and abet his friend Rocket Raccoon’s schemes. Now as the fate of the cosmos hangs in the balance, Groot must join the Guardians of the Galaxy for an adventure that will test the limits of even his monstrous strength. Groot appears in the #76020 LEGO Marvel Super Heroes Knowhere Escape Mission set.

LEGO Guardians of the Galaxy Groot

Rocket Raccoon: Despite his diminutive stature and raccoon-like appearance, the scrappy mercenary known as Rocket possesses a remarkable mastery of munitions and battle tactics. A host of illegal genetic and cybernetic experiments on the planet Half-World have ensured that Rocket is the only creature of his type in all the cosmos, and until recently he has been content to roam the stars in search of adventure and fast cash with his partner in crime, Groot. But when an ominous threat leaves the entire universe at risk, Rocket must bring his mechanical genius and ingenuity to bear as a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy! Rocket Raccoon appears in the #76020 LEGO Marvel Super Heroes Knowhere Escape set.

LEGO Guardians of the Galaxy Rocket Raccoon

#76020 LEGO KNOWHERE ESCAPE MISSION: Team up with Groot and Rocket Raccoon to plot an escape from Knowhere! They’ve discovered the rare orb in the mining fields, only to be ambushed by the bad guys. Evade shots from the huge bazooka assembled by the Sakaaran and the evil Nebula and return fire with Rocket Raccoon’s custom space blaster. Leap into action with the gigantic posable Groot to confront the sword-wielding Nebula. Launch a fierce counter-attack so Rocket Raccoon can get away in the mining pod with the precious orb in its grabbing claw! Includes 3 minifigures with assorted weapons: Rocket Raccoon, Nebula and the Sakaaran, plus Groot figure. 433 pieces. Price: $39.99 – BUY HERE

#76020 LEGO Guardians of the Galaxy

Drax: Fueled by a personal vendetta against those who cost him his family, the rough-edged warrior called Drax the Destroyer has room in his life for little else besides revenge. To this end, the heavily tattooed Drax has long relied upon his proficiency in battle and his razor-sharp blades to do his talking for him. After making a tentative alliance with the Guardians of the Galaxy, the untamed Drax must learn to put the needs of the universe before his own. Drax appears in the #76021 LEGO Marvel Super Heroes Milano Spaceship Rescue set.

LEGO Guardians of the Galaxy Drax

Gamora: The last surviving member of the peaceful Zehoberi species, Gamora was transformed into an unparalleled warrior through rigorous training and physiological augmentation. For years Gamora has used her formidable fighting skills and master swordsmanship in service to a dark power, earning her the reputation of the “most dangerous woman in the universe.” Gamora now seeks to redeem her past crimes as a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and waits for an opportunity to bring vengeance to those who have manipulated her. Gamora appears in the #76021 LEGO Marvel Super Heroes Milano Spaceship Rescue set.

LEGO Guardians of the Galaxy Gamora

#76021 LEGO MILANO SPACESHIP RESCUE: Join the Guardians of the Galaxy for the ultimate battle against evil Ronan! Prepare for an epic clash between the Guardians of the Galaxy and the ultimate villain, Ronan! Ronan zooms into this epic deep-space battle in his personal Necrocraft, backed up by the Sakaaran, and holding his all-powerful Cosmi-Rod ready to strike. Luckily, Star-Lord is prepared to launch a counter-attack with the equally potent Hadron Enforcer and 2 iconic space blasters. Steer the mighty Milano Spaceship into battle with Gamora and Drax, firing the stud shooters and flick missiles to repel this evil threat to the Galaxy. Includes 5 minifigures with assorted weapons and accessories: Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Ronan and the Sakaaran. 665 pieces. Price: $74.99 – BUY HERE

#76021 LEGO Guardians of the Galaxy

The minifigs in all three sets are wonderfully detailed and I’m pretty sure collectors love them. Rocket Raccoon especially is a great minifigure, accurate to the film yet LEGO-ish enough. I also really like the Nova Corps Officer from the #76019 LEGO Starblaster Showdown set, and Gamora from the #66021 LEGO Milano Spaceship Rescue – a really sweetly detailed minifig. As far as the sets themselves, I don’t want to make this article any longer than it is already (we can discuss them in more detail in a full review later) but I would say that I only heard good things about the #76021 LEGO Milano Spaceship Rescue, with several people claiming it as their all-time favorite LEGO set – a pretty strong endorsement. If you are interested in any of the new LEGO Guardians of the Galaxy sets (along with other LEGO Marvel Super Heroes sets) you can find them at the Online LEGO Shop.

I own all three. make a stopmoition (not as good as that one) about the guardians !

  • Micho August 21, 2014, 11:26 AM

i totally agree, the Milano (named after Alissa Milano, a very famous actress from the 80s/90s) is a beautiful ship, i would love to own it along with my Avenger’s Quinjet,a s I’m sure they will both make an appearance in Avengers 3.

    • admin August 21, 2014, 11:45 AM

I don’t have the Milano, but so far everyone I talked to who actually built it said it is amazing. I don’t think I will get it though as I have other priorities, but I really like the Quinjet. It is really an awesome set.

      • Micho August 21, 2014, 12:09 PM

What I’m really wishing for is in the future finding a bunch of Nova Starblasters on sale… I could build my own Nova Corps! That would be the sweetest!

        • admin August 21, 2014, 12:11 PM

That would be very sweet! I think with the holidays coming up you might find something. 😉

  • hippie hudson August 21, 2014, 11:28 AM

I have to be honest that I don’t really like the look of these sets, the starblaster is ok but I really don’t like the look of the milano spaceship…. I haven’t seen the movie yet but I’m sure lego have done well with creating a close likeness to the movie.

I do however really like the raccoon minifig and his gun is cool too the rest is not my thing.

    • admin August 21, 2014, 11:46 AM

Yeah, Rocket Raccoon is excellent. Some people say it is the best minifig LEGO ever made. And I agree about that gun! 😀

  • legostuff71 August 21, 2014, 12:19 PM

The sets are great and the movie( I saw twice) is great. Oh, did you see the very end of movie ( after the credits) ? Something very interesting, maybe something in the next movie.

  • Kim August 21, 2014, 3:11 PM

Off topic these days!! Do you happen to know how much longer they plan to have the Winter Village Carnival available? Or whatever that set is called. I’d really like to get it and I’m concerned they’ll discontinue it before I can buy it. And if it has potential to leave soon I may need to make sure I purchase it.

    • admin August 21, 2014, 3:25 PM

Kim, the set was released last year, so I’m pretty sure it will be avialable through this holiday season, as all of the Christmas Village sets lasted at least two Christmast seasons. The issue is not so much if it becomes retired, but the fact that ALL Winter Village sets as well as Advent Calendars usually get sold out way before the holidays. To be absolutelely safe, I would buy it in September, or the latest October. November can be too late. It is the busiest shopping month for LEGO.

      • Kim August 21, 2014, 5:11 PM

I’ll definitely gun for September then. Thanks!

      • Kim August 21, 2014, 6:30 PM

Hey, I just found a new name finally for my Lego site. I’ve updated the URL but I haven’t posted anything new. And I couldn’t hold back. I ordered the Winter Village Market XD. Guess I’ll be getting two mini mini coopers.

        • admin August 21, 2014, 8:39 PM

That’s a great name! I’m glad you found something that works! You won’t be disappointed with the Winter Village set. It is very nice. Do you also have the Winer Village Cottage? That’s actually my favorite. And of course Santa’s Workshop is coming out next month (which is this year’s set). I already have the press-release and all, but I decided not to write about it until next month as it won’t be available until then anyway. 🙂

          • Kim August 21, 2014, 9:25 PM

Thanks! This is my first Winter Village set and I’d definitely like to get Santa’s Workshop. I’m not sure how many of the Winter Village sets I’ll go back and get. My idea currently (though it could change) for the Winter Village Market is to use it in my carnival / theme park set up since I’ll never be able to buy Grand Carousel. I’m not sure if I’ll buy Santa’s Workshop right away but I’ll try. I still find it tricky trying to decide which sets to get because there’s so much awesome stuff.

            • admin August 21, 2014, 9:50 PM

Kim, that’s actually a good idea with the carnival. As you are working on a LEGO City project that may be all you need. Yes, it is tough narroving down which sets are really worth getting and fit with your style of building or with your displays. A smaller and well thought out layout is much nicer than a chaos of random LEGO sets.

The good thing though is that LEGO won’t loose its value. So for example if in the future you find yourself that you are attracted to a LEGO set, but you are not 100% sure if it fits your current display, but worried about it retiring soon, you can buy it to make sure that you don’t miss out, but don’t open the box. Just put it aside until you are sure that you will use it, and if not, you can resell it for likely more than you bought it for, or at least get your money back and use it for something else. 😉

  • Brad August 21, 2014, 5:03 PM

I’ve seen the movie, and I have my eye on Knowere Escape and the Milano sets (to get all of the guardians minifigures). I’m also looking forward to when the poster in your first image becomes available.

    • admin August 21, 2014, 8:36 PM

Brad, I’m not sure if the posted is actually going to be available. It is a LEGO version of the original movie poster – something LEGO has been doing lately. But as far as I know not all of them make it into real printed posters.

      • Brad August 21, 2014, 8:58 PM

I’m not sure if the Harry Potter ones, or the 3D Phantom Menace one, did, but the rest of them did. The Lone Ranger one wasn’t available at a LEGO store, but I got it through an AMC theater. Most of them are available the month of the movie release, and this does seem to break that pattern, but I’m confident that it will be available, because all of the rest of the Super Heroes (DC and Marvel) posters have been. I’m keeping my eyes open, which includes having an Ebay search that notifies me of any additions.

        • admin August 21, 2014, 9:45 PM

Brad, this is actually a really interesting topic and would probably make a good article; LEGO movie posters and which ones are available. I may do a bit of research on this and maybe write up something. 🙂

          • Brad August 21, 2014, 11:20 PM

As a collector who tracks this, I’ll be able to help if you want. I don’t want to write the article myself, but I’d enjoy helping you with your research. Email me if you’re interested.

            • admin August 22, 2014, 11:58 AM

Thanks for all your help, Brad! 🙂

  • Legozebra August 21, 2014, 6:48 PM

Saw the movie yesterday… Before the movie there was a LEGO ad for Guardians of the Galaxy! 😀

  • Robin August 22, 2014, 7:26 AM

This is unrelated but does lego fusion Battle towers come with a minifig because lego fusion town master does.

    • admin August 22, 2014, 12:03 PM

Robin, there is no minifig in Battle Towers. Only the City set and the Resort Designer comes with a minifig.

  • Håkan August 22, 2014, 8:24 AM

The ships look decent, but I don’t like the construction of Groot. It looks like a weird compromise between brick-built and specialized, and thus failing on both.

    • admin August 22, 2014, 12:07 PM

I pretty much agree with that. And this is the problem with licensed sets; the vehicles and characters don’t always translate to LEGO easily. In the case of Groot, I believe they went in the specialized way because the character has to be highly playable, plus it gotta look like in the film. But they didn’t want it to like an action figure either. So yeah, one of those characters that doesn’t translate well. This is why I prefer LEGO’s own themes.

      • Håkan August 22, 2014, 6:23 PM

I’d have preferred it if they only had made a custom head, and otherwise imitated the structure with brackets and brown wedge parts. As now, the torso piece is pretty useless for making anything else.

  • ninja5 August 22, 2014, 4:13 PM

Sweet video! Also, does anyone know the code to unlock the barbarian in Minifigures Online?

  • legoman June 15, 2015, 6:04 AM

I feel like they could have done better right
