LEGO Helicarrier review & power-functions

As we have recently discussed (see links at the end of this post), the #76042 LEGO Marvel Super Heroes SHIELD Helicarrier was just released a few days ago. It is only available for LEGO VIP members right now, but will get a wider release next month. This has been one of the most anticipated sets of the year, and while it looks amazing on pictures, it is hard to get the scope and size without seeing it in more detail. So in the video-review below Jason from the Brick Show will show you the set from every possible angle, and in the second video he will also show you how to add power-functions. ๐Ÿ™‚

#76042 LEGO SHIELD Helicarrier

The #76042 LEGO Super Heroes SHIELD Helicarrier is an Ultimate Collector Series set, so the focus is on adding accurate details, and also to make it as big and impressive as possible for display purposes. It is nice to see though that LEGO was able to incorporate some play-features as well.

#76042 LEGO SHIELD Helicarrier Available Now

The first thing you will notice from the video-review below is that the box of this set is humongous! But it is always fun to open such large LEGO boxes; you know it is going to be full of fun!

#76042 LEGO SHIELD Helicarrier Overview

Also, notice in the video-review the size of the instruction booklet! In fact it can no longer be called a booklet; with over 400 pages it is a serious manual! While in the past LEGO used to add several smaller booklets with larger sets, this year they started to include only one larger and better quality book, no matter what’s the size of the set. While having just one book is nicer and neater, the downside is that if you are building with friends, you can no longer separate out tasks – each of you working from a different booklet.

And take a look at theย nice printing on the minifigs! Jason doesn’t mention this, but Maria Hill actually have the SHIELD emblem printed on her right shoulder. Arm-printing is still fairly rare for LEGO, so this is a super-special and really cool looking detail. See full video-review below:

In the second video Jason will show you exactly how to add power-functions to the LEGO SHIELD Helicarrier. Even if you have never worked with power-functions before, you will see how easy it is. At the back of the instruction book LEGO provides a list of the power-function elements you need and also step-by-step instructions on how to install them in the set. And you can also follow along the video to see how to add them. You can get the power-function elements directly from LEGO. The parts you need are as follows: #88000 LEGO Battery Box, #8883 LEGO M-Motor and #8870 LEGO Lights. That’s it. You can find them all at the LEGO Power Functions section of the Online LEGO Shop.

With or without power-function, the #76042 LEGO Marvel Super Heroes SHIELD Helicarrier is definitely an incredible set that should delight Marvel fans and collectors. As I have mentioned, currently it is only available for LEGO VIP members (make sure you are signed in with your VIP account to get it), and it will be more widely available in March. You can find it listed under the LEGO Marvel Super Heroes section of the Online LEGO Shop.

    • admin February 22, 2015, 2:13 PM

You got it and built it already??? Good for ya! ๐Ÿ˜›

  • Dr. Inferno February 22, 2015, 6:28 PM

I really wish this would have come with an Agent Coulson….

    • Darth Weevil February 22, 2015, 10:54 PM

Yeah, I do not get the lack of Coulson in this set, or in any of the other Marvel sets. Huge oversight, even if I am glad to see a Maria Hill minifigure.

  • brickman February 26, 2015, 4:42 PM

Yikes, I’m like never gonna afford this set, but should I try to get the agents hehelicopter?

  • Keeter March 4, 2015, 2:21 PM

I got mine over the weekend and spent a good 10 to 12 hours building it. It. Is. INSANE. Tons of fun. The microfigs are great.

I already have the power pack, motor and lights, so I put those in. I’m ordering an heftier motor (faster RPMS) and more lights from Lego this week. I want to light each turbo fan, the flight tower and I want lights coming out from under the upper flight deck.

    • admin March 4, 2015, 5:07 PM

Nice! It is really worth motorizing this beast as it makes it look even more impressive! ๐Ÿ˜›

      • Keeter March 4, 2015, 5:57 PM

I’m building it from the instructions now in the Lego Digital Designer. Make it a little easier to figure out how to run all the wires.

        • admin March 4, 2015, 5:59 PM

You took the time to build the entire thing in LDD? That takes patience! I’m impressed! ๐Ÿ˜€

    • Brendan March 27, 2016, 6:37 AM

Can u send some pics interested in doing same thing

  • Keeter March 5, 2015, 8:10 AM

It’s a work in progress. I’m about 1/4 of the way through the instruction book.

    • admin March 5, 2015, 8:53 AM

Have fun with that! I know there is a forum on EuroBricks where members share official LEGO sets they recreated in LDD. You might want to check it out. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Keeter March 5, 2015, 10:27 AM

    I’ve been there. Thanks.

  • Keeter March 15, 2015, 2:24 PM

I got most of the digital design done. I’ve done the main helicarrier, but not the little planes and trucks (had to make a couple little modifications to accomodate the software). I’ve also ordered the heavier duty power functions motors from Lego and extra lights to I can light up the engines and some of the interior spaces.

    • admin March 15, 2015, 2:29 PM

Keeter, that’s awesome! I have never done such a large project in LDD. Let me know about your experience with the motors. I have been curious on which would work better. Have fun with the upgrades! ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Keeter March 17, 2015, 6:29 PM

I should have the new motors and extra lights in a couple of days. The next project was extending the bottom of the Avengers Tower set, keeping it consistent with the Lego design, to make it 10 stories tall. I built it in LDD and ordered the parts from both Bricklink and Lego. It’s going to tower above our modular building main street.

    • admin March 18, 2015, 1:33 PM

You are expending the Avengers Tower? Would love to see that! ๐Ÿ˜›

  • Vihanga April 22, 2015, 9:08 PM

Hi I’m going to have one but is it released for non VIP members and what’s the best power function set

    • admin April 23, 2015, 11:47 AM

Vihanga, yes, the set is available for non-VIPs. In the article I mention all the parts you need to power the set, along with a link where you can get them directly from LEGO. ๐Ÿ˜‰

      • Vihanga April 24, 2015, 8:16 AM

Sir if my dad become a VIP member can he buy the shield helicarrier for a low price
And can I buy two motors and speed up the propellers and can I buy more micro shield agents from the lego

        • Vihanga April 24, 2015, 8:17 AM

And can u just give me the link again

          • admin April 24, 2015, 9:25 AM

Vihanga, the link is right there in the article. ๐Ÿ˜‰

        • admin April 24, 2015, 9:24 AM

Vihanga, you can buy the Helicarrier you are a VIP member or not. The price is not lower for VIP members. It is just that you collect points for future purchases. And yes, you can buy as many motors as you want. As far as getting more agents, you need to call LEGO about that, or just buy more on the secondary market.

      • Vihanga April 24, 2015, 8:39 AM

I think u work in lego but is it wrong sorry because I feel more and more experience about lego in your life so be honest and tell me the best power function parts for my new helicarrier ( even the most valuable parts ) and can u join my Facebook im vihanga hulk buster

I’m still 15 and expecting to make the lego ship for 16+ and I’m really exited right now that’s why
          ๐Ÿ˜‰

        • admin April 24, 2015, 9:26 AM

Vihanga, as I said, the list of power function parts you need to motorize the Helicarrier is right in the article, all you have to do is scroll up. ๐Ÿ˜‰

          • Vihanga April 24, 2015, 11:36 PM

            Thanks admin
But why do u need points for purchases can u explain it a little bit more
So if it’s valuable I can ask dad to be a VIP member

            • Vihanga April 24, 2015, 11:37 PM

By the way do u have a picture of the helicarrier of keeters I would like to see that and develop my ship too

              • admin April 25, 2015, 8:56 AM

Vihanga, you will have to ask Keeter for that. ๐Ÿ˜‰

            • admin April 25, 2015, 8:53 AM

Vihanga, you don’t need points for purchases, however if you do get them you can redeem them as a discount. For example with the Helicarrier you get 350 VIP points if you are VIP member. Each 100 points earns you $5 that you can use when you shop for something else in the future. So yeah, that’s more than $15 savings right there. If you only plan to buy one LEGO set, and never another one, it doesn’t matter if you get points or not. However if you shop for LEGO regularly, it is a good way to save money.

              • Vihanga April 26, 2015, 11:13 AM

So how can I contact keeter and please join my face book I’m vihangahulkbuster and tell me how to speed the rotors it gives a fine sound too and if I’m gonna be a VIP do I have to pay

  • Vihanga April 26, 2015, 11:28 AM

    Admin I’m trusting u
My father loves me very much he never says no and price and I know the price of the helicarrier and it’s 47,998.5 Sri Lankan rupees so Please let me know if their are any bugs on it I mean the pieces and my sister is buying the guardians of the galaxy Milano space rescue and my brother is buying the starblaster showdown or something like that but they are not this much expensive and I’m sad but I want it so let me know if their are any bugs on it and when will they be fixes
    :|)

    • admin April 26, 2015, 11:33 AM

Vihanga, I’m not sure what you mean by bugs. The Helicarrier is an Ultimate Collector’s Series set, and one of the most expensive LEGO sets ever released. It is not a playset, but a set for collectors. It is $350 US, so according to the currency converter I just checked, you have the correct price.

  • Vihanga April 26, 2015, 9:42 PM

I meant by broken pieces stickers etc . Can’t we play it why

    • admin April 27, 2015, 8:35 AM

Vihanga, LEGO sets you buy directly from LEGO are new, directly from the LEGO factory. Defective pieces in LEGO sets are extremely rare, pretty much non-existing. And if in the extremely rare occasion that you might find one, LEGO will replace it for free.

I didn’t say you can’t play with the Helicarrier. I said it is primarily a display model for older teens and adult builders, not a play-set for little kids. For most young children this set would be much too complex to build, and way to big to swoosh around with little hands. This is why the recommended age is 16+. But that doesn’t mean younger kids can’t build them, they might just need some help from an adult. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Vihanga April 26, 2015, 9:44 PM

And did u find my Facebook profile

  • Vihanga April 26, 2015, 9:45 PM

    How can I contact keeter

    • admin April 27, 2015, 8:36 AM

You can just leave a message for him here, and if he chooses to, he can respond.

  • Vihanga April 27, 2015, 9:59 AM

Thanks and how about my face book

  • Vihanga April 28, 2015, 7:31 AM

    Sorry admin I didn’t saw a message
So I’m fifteen can I make it with a friend if mine he’s also fifteen is the age both together will be thirty so can I try it
And all the time I’m really lucky to get something bad that’s my fortune but if the lego replace it would the replace the whole set or the piece if it’s the piece that’s ok because I’m a lego fan I have a lego tank a lego pirate ship a lego battle ship all are given to me when I’m small now the pieces are left sobi can replace by my self ๐Ÿ˜‰ don’t need to disturb the lego because their doing a great job for kids like us who like building this by yourself other than buying a toy from a shop which is already built :|)

  • Vihanga April 28, 2015, 9:31 PM
