Let’s talk LEGO Pirates today! The new 2015 LEGO Pirates sets were just released a few days ago, to the great excitement of pirate fans! The sets are quite modest in both price and size, and the good thing about this is that they should fit pretty much any LEGO fan’s budget and play/display-space. They also come with nice details and updated minifigures from the last LEGO Pirates release in 2009. While we talked about all of the new sets previously (see links at the end of this post), today we will take a closer look at them through the video-reviews by JANGBRiCKS, so you can see all the details and play-features. Also, as a nice surprise, LEGO added another set to the new LEGO Pirates line in form of a chess game! 🙂
➡ #70410 LEGO PIRATES SOLDIERS OUTPOST: Check out the dumbstruck pirate drifting by the Soldiers Outpost! Shiver me timbers! A cunning pirate is enjoying his latest catch aboard his raft when a giant octopus decides to join him for dinner… “Aargh!” After taking refuge in the crow’s nest he drifts by a military outpost and two very surprised Bluecoat Soldiers… “Hide the treasure!” Man the powerful spring-loaded cannon, sink the pirate’s raft and put the sea dog behind bars! But keep an eye out for the pesky crab that loves to steal jewels! Enjoy fun, swashbuckling adventures with the LEGO Pirates Soldiers Outpost! Combine with the #70412 LEGO Pirates Soldiers Fort for an even bigger pirate adventure! Includes 3 minifigures with assorted weapons and accessories: 2 Bluecoat Soldiers and a pirate. 164 pieces. Price: $19.99 – BUY HERE
This is one of the smaller, but still substantial enough sets in the new LEGO Pirates line. The small raft is quite nice, and you also get an octopus, a small outpost with a spring-loaded cannon and three minifigs – all the essential elements for some pirate fun! The color-scheme of white with the new masonry-bricks in dark red is especially striking, and one of my favorite features of the new LEGO Pirate sets. One thing that is sorely missing from this set, as well as all the other ones in this new line, is the monkey. A puzzling omission as the monkey (and parrot) were always iconic parts of LEGO Pirates sets. Watch the full video-review below for more details:
➡ #70412 LEGO PIRATES SOLDIERS FORT: Join the swashbuckling action at the Soldiers Fort! Kaboom! A cunning pirate has carried out a daring raid on the soldiers’ fort, rescuing his pesky mate and stealing the treasure. But the Bluecoat Soldier has manned the cannon and the Bluecoat Governor and his daughter are fighting back. Help foil the pirates’ escape, winch up the booty from their rowboat and open fire. When you’ve sunk the boat, capture the soggy pirates and put them back in prison where they belong! Join the excitement with the awesome LEGO Pirates Soldiers Fort, featuring a prison cell with breakout function. Combine with the #70410 LEGO Pirates Soldiers Outpost for an even bigger pirate adventure! Includes 5 minifigures with assorted weapons and accessories: Bluecoat Governor, Governor’s daughter, Bluecoat Soldier and 2 pirates. 234 pieces. Price: $29.99 – BUY HERE
This is one of the largest sets in the new LEGO Pirates line, and as you can see it is still quite modest with a low price. However it can be combined together with the previous set for a larger layout. In my opinion this is a good strategy for LEGO in general; rather than offering one $50 set that people may or may not want to get, offer two smaller ones that are nice sets in their own right, and can also be combined. Here we get the same white and dark-red colors that look is nice, and I also really like those lime-green leaves – just make the color-scheme even nicer. Also, we get another spring-loaded cannon here, and they are always fun. The only thing that looks weird is the addition of that new stud-shooters. They look way too futuristic and out of place, but I understand that LEGO just wanted to add more play-features. The minifigs in this set are particularly nice with an excellent variety and gorgeous printing. But no monkey or parrot in this set either. Watch the full video-review below for more details:
➡ #70413 LEGO PIRATES THE BRICK BOUNTY: Battle on the high seas with The Brick Bounty! Hoist the Jolly Roger and set sail! The pesky pirates are heading for the high seas aboard their mighty galleon, with a chest full of booty stashed in the hold. But the Bluecoat Soldiers have caught up with them in their rowboat and are ready for action! Help the Bluecoat Soldiers commandeer the vessel and recover the stolen treasure. Launch a fierce broadside attack and board the ship. Then draw your weapons and defeat the scurvy pirates. When you’re done, put the rogues behind bars and lock them up for good! The awesome LEGO Pirates Brick Bounty features 2 tall masts with huge sails, rigging and crow’s nests, Jolly Roger, working winch with anchor, cannons, walk-the-plank function and a saw-nosed shark. Includes a skeleton and 7 minifigures with assorted weapons and accessories: a pirate captain, pirate first mate, pirate cabin boy, pirate cook, Bluecoat Admiral, Bluecoat Sergeant and a Bluecoat Soldier. 745 pieces. Price: $99.99 – BUY HERE
This is the set that LEGO Pirates fans have looked forward to the most. It has all the proper pirate-ship features like the two masts with clip-on sails, rigging, crow’s nests, lanterns, anchor, etc. And three spring-loaded cannons. (So many cannons in this series! There is at least one in every set!). On the other hand, this ship is quite conservative and looks pretty much the same as the previously released #6243 LEGO Pirates Brickbeard’s Bounty. If you don’t have that set and would like to start your own pirate ship fleet, The Brick Bounty is a good way to get into the hobby. It is a solid and good looking ship. However I hope that we will get more impressive ships as well in the future. Watch the full video-review below for more details:
There are a couple of other sets in the new LEGO Pirates line, the #70409 LEGO Pirates Shipwreck Defense for $12.99 and the #70411 LEGO Pirates Treasure Island. This second set is particularly interesting as it includes the new type of crocodile. We have talked about both sets before so I won’t go into details, but there is one set I would like to mention as it is a new surprise addition to the line we didn’t know about before; the #40158 LEGO Pirates Chess Set. It features pirates on one side and bluecoats on the other, on a beach-themed, somewhat elevated chess-board. There are a total of 20 minifigures included, so this is a good way to build up your armies, and of course play chess too! 🙄
If you are planning to collect the entire LEGO Pirates line I should also bring to your attention that there is one more set you might consider adding to the collection, the #10679 LEGO Juniors Pirate Treasure Hunt. This is a small, $10 set, but it comes with a really nice printed wall element. You can find it under the LEGO Juniors section of the Online LEGO Shop. And all the other LEGO Pirates sets we talked about above can be found under the LEGO Pirates section of the Online LEGO Shop.
So what do you think? How do you like the new LEGO Pirates line? Are you planning to get some of the sets, or get the entire collection? Which is your favorite set in this series? Feel free to share your thoughts and discuss in the comment section below! 😉

I was surpised also when I saw the chess set on their website….I recently bought the ship, and it is a very nice buy.
You said 2019 instead of 2009… Sorry, I just had to point that out. I like the chess one as it includes the minifigures. That and maybe a few other of the sets would be amazing!
They are from the future… but thanks for catching that! 🙄
Future Pirates, like in that Disney Treasure Planet movie…
Naw, even better!
Not too interested in most of these sets, I was almost disappointed by their smallish-ness. However, I find some of the parts useful, and since I don’t have any cannons, I might get the Soldier’s Fort. And I really like that chess set! It comes with all those of pirate & soldier minifigs, which I have none of. I notice that one guy on each side is holding a food item instead of a weapon; hence the scared faces. 🙂 There are also 2 parrots on it.
Also, I think the word you’re looking for with the stud-shooters is “anachronism” – A thing that is or seems to be out of its proper time in history. 😉
The chess set is actually even more interesting than I thought. It can split and has storage compartments underneath. Pretty neat. And yeah, those stud-shooters are really out of place! 😛
I recently ordered the Fort. I’m excited for it to come. I don’t play chess but I kind of want the chess set so I can have extra pirate minifigures.
It’s cool that the octopus is returning. I might want to get that!
I was planning on getting most of these but having picked up 16 canons on bricklink all I’ll get now is the chess set as I didn’t know it was being released!
Sixteen cannons???!!! What are you dong with sixteen cannons? 😯
You haul sixteen cannons, and what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt…
LOL! That’s funny! And yeah, hauling cannons is no joke! 😀
What will be interesting will be the impact of the new pirates sets on canon prices. I was lucky in that I got my 16 for £2 each so £32/$48ish. I qlready had another 12 from before also but I can see prices dropping rapidly. Normally on bricklink in the UK until now they have been more like $8-10 each which is why I bought so many….
I don’t know how much lower prices could go. At least here in the US the pearl-dark-gray version is already less than 50 cents. 😛
I’m slowly attempting to make a near full minifig scale frigate based on a guide on eurobricks. It’s 5 hull sections plus prow/stern piece so its going to be huge. At least 6 canon each side possibly 8 although I may end up doing a double deck…
Also they were cheap 🙂
That’s an impressive project! Feel free to share when you have completed it. Would love to see! And yeah, canons are unusually cheap with a very high fun-value! 😛
Its broadly following this to give an idea of scale. I have no intention of doing rigging though as I dont have the patience!

That’s a gorgeous ship! Just thought to mention though that – at leas in my opinion – the sails and the rigging are the most gorgeous parts of sailing ships. There are three replica pirate and merchant ships near the beach we regularly go to, and the rope-work is one of the most fascinating parts of the ships. My favorite one of the three is named El Galeon (see link). It is a replica Spanish merchant ship that operates as a museum – normally parked at our beaches here in Florida, but also goes on tours to other parts of the country and even the world. I have spent hours looking just at the ropes (you really have to see this ship in real life to appreciate its majesty and beauty): http://www.elgaleon.org/gallery.html
That ship is stunning…. maybe I’ll rethink the rigging. I dont want to do bespoke sails or rigging as although they look fab I just cant commit the time to do it properly. Also this one is dependant on quite a few bricklink orders for the masts etc as I don’t have many around.
Well, real-life ships take a long time to build too, so there is definitely no rush. Plus long-term projects are nice because you can keep tinkering with them, instead of just letting them collect dust on a shelf. 🙂
Very true. This is going to be a multi year project I suspect but hopefully worth it eventually 🙂
Ah… I LOOOOVED this article. I ended up going to Youtube and watched all his pirates videos… this made me want the theme even more. Gotta love that Treasure Island set!!!
Yeah, I really like JANG. I watch his videos for relaxation. 😀
HEHE!!! He is very good at showing all the details!
Yeah, and I like his voice. Mesmerizing – the Bob Ross kind of way. 😛
Those pirate sets could have been nice I they had the size of the previous line, but now they are just so small. The soldier’s fort and outpost combined aren’t as big as the previous soldier foot. The only good thing is the chess set. It is good for getting a lot of soldier minifigures.
LEGO has been releasing a range of smaller sets to cater to people and kids with a smaller budget. If the line does well LEGO usually releases some larger sets in a following wave. This seems to be a good strategy, especially in the current economy where people have less discretionary income to spend on toys. And yes, a bigger ship and fort would be awesome! 🙂
