LEGO Dimensions – new game & sets coming!

LEGO has been really good at taking advantage of social-media in releasing some of their latest sets and themes by dropping little teasers, especially via Facebook and Twitter. Last week was a particularly exciting campaign in collaboration with Warner Bros. gradually revealing LEGO Dimensions – LEGO’s own take on the popular toys-to-life video games genre, so far dominated by Nintendo Amiibo, Skylanders, and Disney Infinity. Below is the official press-release with details about the game, the upcoming LEGO sets, and the announcement-trailer. 🙂

LEGO Dimensions Press-Release

The Creativity of LEGO Building Meets the Epic Story-Telling of LEGO Videogames for Multi-Dimensional Fun Fan-Favorite Worlds Converge in One Thrilling Adventure — A Dark Knight, a Wizard, and a Master Builder Travelling Down the Yellow Brick Road is Just the Beginning! Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, TT Games and The LEGO Group today announced LEGO® Dimensions, an all-new entertainment experience that breaks the rules of traditional gaming to merge physical LEGO brick building with interactive console gameplay in a manner only imaginable in the world of LEGO games. Launching 29th September, 2015, the game will fuse many fan-favorite universes together, including DC Comics, The Lord of the Rings, The LEGO Movie, The Wizard of Oz, LEGO Ninjago, Back to the Future, and many more still to be announced.

LEGO Dimensions, developed by TT Games and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, will be available for Xbox One, the all-in one games and entertainment system from Microsoft and the Xbox 360 games and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation®4 and PlayStation®3 computer entertainment systems and Nintendo´s Wii™ U system.

LEGO Dimensions Starter Pack

For the first time in any LEGO videogame, characters from iconic entertainment franchises join forces and battle in worlds outside of their own. In addition to the game, the LEGO Dimensions Starter Pack will include the LEGO Toy Pad, which allows players to transport special LEGO minifigures and other LEGO objects into the game, bricks to build the LEGO Gateway, three LEGO Minifigures, including LEGO Batman TM from DC Comics, LEGO Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings and Wyldstyle from The LEGO Movie, plus the LEGO BatmobileTM.

LEGO Dimensions Licenses

“When kids play with LEGO bricks, they build beyond the singular brands, intermixing all of their favorite characters and universes, and we have come up with a way for players to experience that in games,” said Jon Burton, Founder and Creative Director, TT Games. “Now for the first time in a videogame, LEGO fans can play in the virtual world and in the real world – combining everything without restrictions. Imagine putting LEGO Gollum from The Lord of the Rings behind the wheel of the LEGO Delorean in New Ninjago City – the creative play is endless.”

LEGO Dimensions Kit

“Building on TT Games’ track record for exceptionally popular, engaging games, LEGO Dimensions expands our LEGO videogame franchise with a breakthrough, immersive interactive entertainment experience that will redefine the toys to life games category,” said Jeff Junge, Senior Vice President, LEGO Franchise and TT Games, Warner Bros. Entertainment. “LEGO Dimensions will bring fans innovative and joyful gameplay with an amazing mash-up of huge brands in both the physical and digital worlds.”

LEGO Dimensions Sets

“LEGO Dimensions is unlike anything that we have ever done. It further extends the LEGO play experience into the digital world with all of the characters, humor and action of LEGO videogames now combined with the fun of LEGO minifigure and model building,” said Niels Jørgensen, Vice President, Digital Games for the LEGO Group. “We are thrilled to expand our partnership with TT Games to explore ways in which physical and digital LEGO play can merge in meaningful ways for children.”

LEGO Dimensions Team Pack

In addition to the three minifigure heroes used to start the experience, LEGO Dimensions will allow gamers to customize their experience with additional expansion packs. Highly collectible Level Packs, Team Packs and Fun Packs will provide new buildable characters, vehicles, tools and gadgets, as well as compelling game content with new mission-based levels and unique in-game abilities. All expansion packs will feature well-known properties and provide gamers the opportunity to use everything interchangeably, anywhere throughout the game – with no limitations.

LEGO Dimensions Packs

A small sample of packs available in 2015 include the Back to the Future Level Pack with a LEGO Marty McFly minifigure, a LEGO Ninjago Team Pack with Kai and Cole minifigures, three Ninjago Fun Packs with Jay, Nya and Zane minifigures, two DC Comics Fun Packs with Wonder Woman and Cyborg minifigures, three The Lord of the Rings Fun Packs with LEGO Gollum, LEGO Gimli and LEGO Legolas minifigures, four The LEGO Movie Fun packs with Emmet, Bad Cop, Benny and Unikitty characters, and a The Wizard of Oz Fun Pack with a LEGO Wicked Witch of the West minifigure. Additional packs to round out the 2015 assortment will be announced in the months leading to launch. Further waves of expansion packs will be released regularly following the launch of the game and into 2016.

LEGO Dimensions Back to the Future

LEGO Dimensions not only offers a bridge between digital and physical LEGO play, but also introduces a digital system of play with great long-term value for LEGO gaming. One LEGO Toy Pad, LEGO Gateway and the videogame found in the initial Starter Pack will offer endless opportunities to customize a player’s experience for years to come. Future expansion pack purchases will continue to work with the Starter Pack, even in the fall of next year. No compatibility chart necessary.

It definitely looks interesting, and I am curious to see this in action when it gets closer to the release date.

But what peaks my interest even more is seeing that The Wizard of Oz is one of the realms in this game. Seeing that there are currently no The Wizard of Oz sets, I am really curious to see if this hints at a future set that has yet to be released. Both my wife and I would be very excited if they released The Wizard of Oz themed Lego sets. And with so many books in the Oz series that really expands ones imagination, they have a lot of potential to work with that wasn’t seen in the movie adaptations. It would also cater well to both genders as well as many age groups since the Oz series targeted demographic is so diverse.

Good analysis. It is very possible that LEGO will pick up and expand the Oz series. It would be a good fit, and as you said; it would appeal to many age groups and both genders.

The game looks fun but expensive. Either way, I can’t wait for it to come out!

  • LegoUniverse Bob April 13, 2015, 12:05 PM

Yay, more info about the game (this article was much more informative than the trailer =P). Thanks admin! 🙂

    • admin April 13, 2015, 12:52 PM

You’re welcome. Pretty interesting stuff, isn’t it? 😛

  • Ninja of Stealth April 13, 2015, 12:38 PM

Looks pretty interesting but like sky landers and the Disney infinity… BUT WITH LEGO!!! I might get this but I rather get something else LEGO because with these types of games it seems like the characters/minifigures will keep adding up and it’s just more money to spend which equals more clutter in my room. It’s a great idea on LEGO’s part!

  • Jody April 13, 2015, 12:48 PM

just wondering if you know when the Big Bang theory set will be coming out, which characters will it have? (Hoping it includes Amy, Bernadette, and Raj’s puppy, but that would make at least 7 minifigures and an animal, might be expensive!) and how much it will cost. Thanks

    • admin April 13, 2015, 12:57 PM

Jody, no official info about the release date yet, but I have heard some preliminary rumors that it will be released in the fall, along with WALL-E, and both of them will be more expensive than any of the LEGO Ideas sets we have seen.

  • BLProductions April 13, 2015, 1:28 PM

Ah, I have so much to say about this topic… but not the patience to write it all down. 😐 So I’ll be brief.
Anyways, I really like the idea, and it’s quite interesting and new for me, as until recently I haven’t really heard of Infinity or Skylanders (still not sure). The game looks fun, but for some reason the biggest draw to the theme is the other packs that add-on to the game. I totally want the Ninjago Team Pack! But now I have questions:
    1. Are the prices really that high ($100, $30, $25, $15), or are those just the Amazon pre-order prices? I sincerely hope they’re at least a little less. 😕
    2. How many players will the game be? Pretty much every LEGO/TT game in existence is 2P, so will this be the same, or 4P?
    3. Are they coming on the 27 or the 29? It’s a minor issue, but everywhere I look the dates are different. LEGO’s announcement says 29th, yet their site says 27th. 😕
Obviously if we don’t know the answers now, we will by the 27/29.

I’m looking forward to it. I’ll be getting the starter set for my Wii U because that’s where I’ve been purchasing all my other Lego games. I don’t have a PS4 yet. I think this is what I was hoping the Lego minifigures game would be more like. So, I’m defintely going to try it out.

  • Professor Bunny Productions April 13, 2015, 3:59 PM

I hope LEGO’s prices are lower, because the Amazon prices seem really high to me. I also hope it does four players so all of my brothers and I can play at the same time. I would like to get the Ninjago Team Pack and the The Lord of the Rings Legolas fun pack.

  • David Tennant Lover April 13, 2015, 4:20 PM

I don’t think anyone understands how excited I am to see Back to the Future in a Lego video game! Also possibly future Wizard of Oz sets? In the future, I really hope they add Doctor Who! Adding Doctor Who would make sense because it fits with the dimensions theme, and it is the next set for Lego Ideas. Also, they will probably add Marvel characters since there is DC. Also, since Lego made a deal with Warner Bros. for all this stuff, could we see Harry Potter?
Those were just some of my predictions for adding new lines in Lego Dimensions. So do you think some of my predictions are correct? And what other lines do you think we could see?
By the way, I’m going to get this on my PS4. September is so far away… Everyone is going to be impatient? I’m already counting the days until this comes out, I’m real excited!

    One word: NEED.

  • Taryn (Ninja of Electronics) April 13, 2015, 4:33 PM

I see a thinner wallet in my future…

    • Narrator_Bob April 13, 2015, 7:29 PM

Same here, especially because I still need a console to play it on…

      • Taryn (Ninja of Electronics) April 14, 2015, 7:07 AM

        Yup blackhole for your wallet.

  • John April 13, 2015, 4:44 PM

Some of those micro builds are really nice!

  • David Tennant Lover April 13, 2015, 8:22 PM

I doubt this would happen, but Lego should add Alien to Lego Dimensions, it’d be really cool!

  • brickman April 13, 2015, 9:23 PM

    Is it for PC?

  • Roberta May 6, 2015, 3:23 PM

Hi! I was just reading what you wrote Jody about the release of the Big Bang Theory set. I’ve been checking in periodically to see what rumors you’ve heard…Is it still rumored for fall? Also, you said it’s rumored to be more expensive than previous “ideas” set. What was the price range prior to TBBT? Jus trying to brace myself! Thanks!

    • admin May 6, 2015, 3:35 PM

Roberta, there has been no official updates, but I believe we should still be expecting them in the fall. So far no LEGO Ideas set has been over $50. I’m expecting the WALL-E set to be the most expensive one, probably $75-$100. As far as The Big Bang Theory and Doctor Who sets, my guess would be between $50-$75. But this is just my estimation based on the size of the sets. So yes, a bit more expensive than previous sets because of the size and details, but still not too bad.

  • Roberta May 6, 2015, 3:55 PM

Thanks! We’ll we’ve made it this far, just a few more months to go! Thanks for all the info. When you said the BTTB is expected to be more expensive, I started to imagine way over $100, so your guestimate is music to my ears and about the price I was expecting. Thanks for all your help!

    • admin May 7, 2015, 8:54 AM

Roberta, you are very welcome. Hopefully we will get official information soon! Just hang in there! 🙂
