LEGO Ideas The Big Bang Theory coming!

Yesterday LEGO revealed the next upcoming LEGO Ideas set, the #21302 LEGO Ideas The Big Bang Theory. If you are not familiar with it, The Big Bang Theory is an American sitcom that has been around for several years and airs on CBS. The show is primarily centered on five geeky characters who live in Pasadena, California: Leonard Hofstadter and Sheldon Cooper (both physicists who share an apartment), Penny (who lives across the hall), Howard Wolowitz (an aerospace engineer) and Raj Koothrappali (an astrophysicist). Two other characters are also included in the LEGO Ideas set who were later added to the show: neuroscientist Amy Farrah Fowler, and Bernadette Rostenkowski (Howard’s wife). So let’s see the LEGO set! ๐Ÿ™‚

#21302 LEGO Ideas Big Bang Theory

The LEGO Ideas The Big Bang Theory set was created by two LEGO fans, Alatariel and GlenBricker. After submitting the project to LEGO Ideas, it quickly achieved minimum required 10,000 public votes for LEGO to consider making it into an official LEGO set. The project was approved by LEGO last year and since then LEGO’s own designers have been working hard to bring the set to life in coordination with their license partners. Below is the official announcement from the LEGO Ideas Blog:

#21302 LEGO Ideas Big Bang Theory Details

“At long last, here it is … the upcoming LEGO Ideas The Big Bang Theory set! Our professional model designer Steen Sig Andersen and graphic designer Mathew Boyle worked to keep the set design as true as possible to fan builders Alatariel and GlenBricker’s original submission, while also working in LEGO design DNA and collaborating with our licensing partners. Mathew says he had a lot of fun bringing elements like Sheldon’s ‘smile,’ Howard’s trademark smirk and Bernadette’s scary side to life in the minifigure characters. Here at LEGO Ideas, we can’t wait for you to be able to build your own model of Leonard and Sheldon’s living room, complete with the minifigure cast of The Big Bang Theory.”ย

This set was created by two LEGO fan designers – Alatariel from Sweden and GlenBricker from the USA – and selected by LEGO Ideas members. Featuring loads of authentic details to satisfy all The Big Bang Theory devotees and including minifigures of all seven main characters from the show, it’s ideal for display or role-play fun. Includes 7 minifigures with assorted accessory elements: Leonard, Sheldon, Penny, Howard, Raj, Amy and Bernadette. #21302 LEGO Ideas Big Bang Theory Minifigures

I know a lot of people were eagerly waiting for this set, so it is great to see its final design. LEGO designers did a great job keeping the final set close to the original submission, and also adding great details like the exclusive minifigures, new colored trophies, (hopefully) printed elements and more. The Chinese takeout boxes should be especially popular. As mentioned above, the set will be available in August, so we don’t have to wait that much longer, and in the meantime you can check out the currently available LEGO Ideas sets submitted by LEGO fans at the Online LEGO Shop.

The minifigs are phenomenal! The setup of the livingroom is okay, could be better. And I really hope those new decorations are not stickers! If they are printed I will get the set, if not I will have to think about it.

If you zoom in close you can tell that some are stickers, example the detail on the burnt orange pillar. Hey Admin can I send you some of my domain name ideas? Just want to know what you think.

Sure, go ahead, you know my email address. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Cool, but I don’t really know what the BBT is, because 1) I live in the UK and 2) I’m 11. =P I just really like the look of this, having a cool telescope, neat bookshelves, accessories and some other things. ๐Ÿ™‚

A lot of people have no idea what this show is outside of the USA, but it is kind of like people in the USA having little idea about Doctor Who. However, as you said, the set is still cool because of all the accessories, new minifigs prints, etc. So yeah, I think it’s cool whether we care about the show or not. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Apparently, BBT airs on Channel 4 in the UK, which, as a Public-Service channel, should be widely available.

Hm… good to know. Thanks for sharing that.

I don’t think Dr Who is as unknown in the USA as people seem to think it is. It’s got quite a following in the U.S. I’m not one of them but I know many Whovians. I’m not a BBT fan but I like some of the items that come with the set so I’ll probably get it.

Maybe that depends on the area you live in. My guess would be that Doctor Who is more popular with California’s geeky crowd, maybe the New York area too. Here in Florida if I mention Doctor Who people will just look at me blankly. ๐Ÿ˜€

  • BLProductions June 4, 2015, 11:52 AM

Not too interested, I’ve only seen the show once or twice. I do like the 2-color legs on two of the figures, especially the far left minifig: the legs are printed. ๐Ÿ˜€ That’s what I need for some of my custom minifigs, 2-color printed legs.
I think that all the decorations are prints except the vent on the front pillar and the large thing on the door (?) in the back wall. Everything else looks printed, but I could be wrong. ๐Ÿ˜
Also, am I the only one that thinks the space station in the last pic here: http://brickset.com/article/15427/bricks-issue-2-out-now looks like a giant, classic-space-y AT-AT? ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • admin June 4, 2015, 11:56 AM

I love that last picture! I have been drooling over it this morning! And yes, now you mention it, it does look like a giant AT-AT from that angle! ๐Ÿ˜€

  • Jay June 4, 2015, 12:53 PM

Love it! Is one of the accessory elements the Lego Death Star? They were putting it together in one of the episodes.

    • admin June 4, 2015, 3:19 PM

Oh, yeah, I see what you mean. Yes, that could be the Death Star! ๐Ÿ˜€

  • David Tennant Lover June 4, 2015, 4:41 PM

I’m not into the show, so I won’t be getting it. However, I see this set could be quite useful for Lego Stop Motions and some prices you can’t find anywhere else. Those Chinese take out boxes? A must need. Got to save up for the Lego Ideas Doctor Who set. Will the Doctor Who set be shown to the public next month or this month?

    • admin June 4, 2015, 9:49 PM

The Doctor Who set will be released more towards the fall, so they may wait some announcing that one. Probably it is a good ideas to spread out the news a little. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • OTigger June 4, 2015, 9:31 PM

Excuse me admin….I know this is off topic, but I need to ask you about this…So today I received the 2015 summer catalog….and I noticed there were no pirates in it…Do you know why this is…The series was just brought out a couple months ago and I thought it was strange….

    • admin June 4, 2015, 9:57 PM

That’s perfectly fine. I don’t mind being off topic. We are friends here. As far as the Pirates sets, my guess is that LEGO just ran out of room and couldn’t include everything in the catalog, especially with all the new sets. Also the Pirates sets were included in the Spring Catalog, so they probably felt there was no need to repeat them. At least that’s my guess. ๐Ÿ˜‰

      • Otigger June 5, 2015, 1:49 PM

        ok…thanks…I thought it was weird….and I missed them….I like pirate lol….

  • Ollantigh June 6, 2015, 2:13 PM

I wonder what the cast and crew think in that series? As mentioned the death star did get seen in one episode, thus woundn’t it be strange to see this set on one of the actual shelves on the studio set in a future series? depending if they make them still…all we get are endless repeats on UK tv…yorn! make you wonder how many did they make?

  • jjava June 7, 2015, 8:09 AM

Can’t wait for this set. Hopefully I will be able to pick up a couple of sets. The team really did a great job at retaining the integrity of the original design.

  • DarrellBricker June 8, 2015, 4:51 PM

Love the show, love this set and definitely going to get it. One minor nitpick – Leonard’s hair. It should have been a wavier style since the actor’s hair is pretty curly/wavy in the show. The “Sleepyhead” Minifigure’s hair might have been a better approximation. But again, that’s just a *very* minor nitpick. Can’t wait to get this set.

    • admin June 9, 2015, 11:02 AM

I have heard other people mentioning the hair too. It would be easy to change it out though.

  • Roberta June 17, 2015, 2:34 PM

Hi! I know I’m clearly obsessed with the Big Bang Theory set, and there’s just 6 weeks to go (and counting!), but just wondering if there typically is early access to Lego Ideas sets for VIP members? Many thanks!

    • admin June 17, 2015, 8:16 PM

Roberta, yes, sometimes VIPs get early access to the Ideas sets, although not always. So, it can go either way. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • Roberta June 18, 2015, 5:23 AM

    Thanks!
