As we get closer to the end of the year, LEGO fans start to get curious about what will next year bring. LEGO already released a number of images of 2017 LEGO sets, and we have discussed many of them already (see links at the end of this post). One of the most popular themes is LEGO Ninjago, and since the 2017 LEGO Ninjago sets were revealed just a few days ago, I thought this would be a good time to discuss them. 🙂
The first wave of 2017 LEGO Ninjago sets are based on the upcoming seventh season of the LEGO Ninjago TV show, titled “The Hands of Time”. The story continues from the LEGO Ninjago: Day of the Departed TV special, and focuses on Kai, Nya, and their parents. While we don’t know the details of the story yet, looking at the sets it is clear that it plays out in some kind of jungle setting with lots of snakes and evil looking samurai.
➡ #70621 LEGO NINJAGO THE VERMILLION ATTACK: This is the smallest of the 2017 LEGO Ninjago sets, but one of the best, as it includes two of the new badguys with unique armor pieces, and a very strange metallic cocoon which will appear in some of the other sets as well. Take a look at that beautiful samurai armor and two fantastic helmets! 83 pieces. Price should be around $10.
➡ #70622 LEGO NINJAGO DESERT LIGHTNING: This is another smallish set with two bikes, two of the badguys with those unique new helmets, and another samurai-type armor piece. The new ninja suit for Jay also looks amazing! 201 pieces. My guess is that this set will be around $20, based on the fact that there is a very similar set currently available with two bikes and three minifigures.
➡ #70623 LEGO NINJAGO DESTINY’S SHADOW: This is a mid-size set with a smallish ship that uses two olive-green canoes to shape the back section. Olive-green is always a welcome color, so this set should be popular. The ninja suits for Lloyd and Cole are nice as well, but we only get one of the badguys. 360 pieces.
➡ #70624 LEGO NINJAGO VERMILLION INVADER: Here you can see two more of those new cocoon pieces, but this time more rounded and used as projectiles. They should be very useful for space and fantasy builders. Zane is fighting the two badguys and their awesome machine. 313 pieces.
➡ #70625 LEGO NINJAGO SAMURAI VXL: What a nicely shaped vehicle we got here! Also notice that this is the first time we see Nya without wearing any red in her outfit. And check out that samurai with gold facemask! This is the first time this piece appears in gold. The badguys’ weapons look awesome as well! 428 pieces.
➡ #70626 LEGO NINJAGO DAWN OF IRON DOOM: This is one of the largest sets in the first wave of 2017 LEGO Ninjago sets, and there is a lot to see. Obviously that snake-mech thingy is the biggest attraction, but the tower is also nice. And this is the first time we get the ranger hood in black! 704 pieces.
➡ #70627 LEGO NINJAGO DRAGON’S FORGE: This is the largest set in the collection, with another large snake, a two-headed fire-water dragon, a fairly large building with a forge, and Kai and Nya’s parents! Looking forward to see the story behind this! 1,137 pieces.
As you can see, this is another fantastic wave of LEGO Ninjago sets. I particularly like the new accessories for the badguys, and it is nice to see that they will be available in all of the sets, including the smallest ones. It is also great that none of these sets are too big or expensive, so it shouldn’t be difficult to collect them all, if you choose to. It’s quite amazing that after all these years, LEGO is still able to churn out interesting stories and amazing sets under LEGO Ninjago.
While we are waiting for the 2017 LEGO Ninjago sets to arrive, you can also check out the current selection of the LEGO Ninjago sets. There are some very solid offerings like the #70596 LEGO Ninjago Samurai X Cave Chaos, the #70738 LEGO Ninjago Final Flight of Destiny’s Bounty, the #70595 LEGO Ninjago Ultra Stealth Raider, and of course the beautiful #70751 LEGO Ninjago Temple of Airjitzu. You can find them all under the LEGO Ninjago section of the Online LEGO Shop.
So what do you think? How do you like the 2017 LEGO Ninjago sets so far? Do you have any favorites that you are definitely planning to get? What do you think the story will be about? Feel free to share your thoughts and discuss in the comment section below! 😉

So exciting! Really like the new samurai armor and those fantasy helmets. They kind of remind me of the old MB castle figures. As far as the sets, my favorite is Iron Doom.
You mean like the old MB Dragons sets? Those figures were hideous, but yeah the helmets do have some resemblance.
Fantastic sets! I really like the colors, and the minifigs are great. Also, it’s nice to see that the prices are reasonable, and the minifigs are well spread out even to the smallest sets.
I don’t think the prices are fixed, it is just a guess of how much it is supposed to be!
The canoes and gold flex tubes on the Destiny’s Shadow are really catching my eye. Plus the Samurai VXL is really awesome, though I doubt I’ll end up getting it. In fact on a whole this is a really nice line-up… maybe not quite as cool to me as the Sky Pirates, but definitely one of the better waves in my opinion!
Looks great! There’s a lot of those little red snakes in these sets…Except for the two I want the most, Destiny’s Shadow and the Samurai VXL. I might get the Destiny’s Shadow, but I probably won’t get the Samurai VXL. Going to a LEGO store tomorrow and I’m going to buy the Rock Roader, so probably no VXL.
This season will be interesting for sure. Do the Ninja go to the past, or do Kai’s parents come to the future? 😕 Anyways, I do like these sets, especially the Dragon’s Forge, but I fear it will be $120, and I can’t afford that.
The best set of this wave is easily the Samurai VXL: the car has steering! It’s a rarely-used mechanism, but you tilt the cockpit, and the front wheels turn in the direction you tilt. A similar system is used on the Technic 8066 Off-Roader’s B-model. And I think Nya’s outfit still has dark red on it.
The cocoon pieces are only new in Titanium Metallic; they are the same molds from Galaxy Squad back in 2013. What are new pieces are those little beetle-shaped parts the Ninja are after in all the sets, which seem to be keys to the giant clock on the Iron Doom mech-thing. I wonder how important those will be in the episodes.
Also, more Creator sets revealed today, plus Elves, Disney, and Classic: https://brickset.com/article/24636/disney-2017-sets-revealed The Elves are pretty neat (the goblins are not what I expected), and Elsa’s Castle v.2 looks way better than the first rushed one. The Creator is OK, but the rest is rather lackluster (same with the questionably revealed SW sets). :/
BTW, do we have a list for the US LEGO sales for Brick Friday? I’m going to the early VIP-access tomorrow, and I’d like to know ahead of time what will be on sale – assuming the early access includes the sale stuff.
I have been drooling over those Elves images all morning. They look so awesome! Now that you mention, I do recognize the cocoon piece from Alien Conquest. In fact I have some. I just didn’t recognize it as the same piece due to the solid color.
The following is the only communication I have received as far as VIP early access sales. Please note that this is for the UK, so I’m not sure if the USA is the same. Also note that this is just a highlight, not all the sets that will be on sale:
Below is a sneak-peek of just some of the awesome sets reduced by 20%; many more will be revealed on the 25th November!
#10805 DUPLO Around the World
#10220 Exclusives – Creator Expert Volkswagen T1 Camper Van
#41130 Friends Amusement Park Roller Coaster
#70323 NEXO Knights Jestro’s Volcano Lair
Galaxy Squad, not Alien Conquest. But yeah, the solid color makes it look different… however Titanium Metallic is the coolest color it could be, in my opinion. 🙂
Probably there will be some differences between the UK and the US sales; there usually are. But 25th November? That’s Black Friday itself! No early notice at all, besides the four sets you just listed. But the sales are part of the early access, then? As in, all those to-be-revealed-sale sets will be at their reduced price tomorrow?
Yes, Galaxy Squad, that’s what I meant. Was just in a hurry. 🙂
Yes, those sets should be part of the list of sets on sale tomorrow, and available for VIPs. But again, remember that this short list was for the UK. The USA could very well be different. I have put together a post for tomorrow about the VIP early access deals, and if I can, I will update the sales list before it goes live.
Actuall the dragon’s forge is very reasonable; it is only$80!😄
Wait, I thought that Kai and Nya’s parents were dead? I guess that it never specifically said that they were dead, but it was kind of implied…
Like you said; it was never specifically said they were dead. Personally, I always suspected that they were alive and will show up at some point.
Nice sets. OMG what if Nya’s and Kai’s parents are not dead? I mean they never actually have said they are dead.. right? If they did I don’t remember. Or they travel back to time…or to the future? (Nah, if so how would they know of their parents) Theories, theories..
Or what if the parents left in order to protect their kids from finding out about their powers? That is if they are not dead.
I’m certain that it was never outright said that Nya’s and Kai’s parents were dead. All we knew that they were gone, and perhaps they were dead. 😉
I may or may not get dawn of iron doom, reasonable price but trying to save my 💰. I have vermillion attack and desert lightning. Destiny’s shadow looks cool.
