LEGO Disney Princess Mulan mini episode

If you are a fan of classic Disney movies, you might have heard that Mulan, the 1998 animated musical action film, is going to be remade into a live-action movie with the same title. The film was originally announced back in March 2015, and was confirmed by Disney in October of 2016, with a release date set for November 2018. However, at the 2017 Disney Fan Club Expo is was announced that Mulan has been delayed and pushed from its original release to December 2019. 🙁

Like the 1998 animated film, the live-action movie is going to be based on the ancient Chinese legend of Hua Mulan (6th century, Northern and Southern Dynasties period). Mulan is the daughter of an aged warrior who disguises herself as a man in order to take her father’s place in the army and go to war during China’s invasion. She becomes a skilled warrior, and one of the country’s greatest heroines. In the original story, she fights for twelve years and gains high merit, but she refuses any reward and retires to her hometown instead.

LEGO fans have been expecting that Mulan will eventually show up in the LEGO Disney line, as she is one of the major Disney Princess characters. However, with the live-action movie delayed until the end of 2019, it made sense that any related LEGO sets will become available around the same time. So, I was surprised to see a short animation LEGO released a few days ago on their YouTube channel, retelling the story of Mulan in LEGO (see below).

Simple and sweet storytelling, isn’t it? While the characters in the story are mostly cardboard cutouts, Mulan herself is a real mini-doll. Notice that her long hair at the beginning looks exactly the same as Martina’s from the #41313 LEGO Friends Heartlake Summer Pool that was released earlier this year. Does the sort film mean that perhaps we will get LEGO Friends sets with Mulan earlier than expected? That would be awesome!

Just to recap, from the eleven Disney Princesses, LEGO released eight so far: Snow White (mini-doll and DUPLO figure), Cinderella (several mini-doll versions, and DUPLO figure), Aurora (mini-doll and DUPLO figure), Ariel (mini-doll, DUPLO, and regular minifig versions), Belle (mini-doll), Jasmine (mini-doll), Rapunzel (mini-doll), and Merida (mini-doll). And we are still missing Pocahontas, Mulan, and Tiana. However with Mulan on the horizon, it looks like we might eventually get all of them!

While we are waiting to see any other news about Mulan, remember that there are a couple of cute LEGO Disney Princess sets that were released just last month; the #41145 LEGO Disney Ariel and the Magical Spell, and #41146 LEGO Disney Cinderella’s Enchanted Evening. You can find them both under the LEGO Disney section of the Online LEGO Shop.

What do you think? Are you excited for the Mulan live-action movie? And would you like to see Mulan in LEGO form? What setting you think would go well with her character in a LEGO set? Feel free to share your thoughts and discuss in the comment section below! 😉

This is very interesting. I hope they give her a good size set. It would be the first Disney set with some Asian influences. I think it could be really great, as long as they don’t dump it down to a couple of minor sets like they have done with Moana.

Yeah, I’m also hoping for at least one really solid set! Maybe two, so there is one where she is a princess, and another one when she is a warrior. 🙂

Yeah, it would be nice if we’d get those three minidolls in regular sets. Making the line more ethnically diverse, finally.

There are two sets with Moana (or Vaiana), though. Although maybe she’s not an official princess…

      • admin September 5, 2017, 3:03 PM

Yeah, Moana is not a Disney Princess officially, but I don’t see why she couldn’t be. She was the leader of her people, after all! 😀

She was the daughter of the island’s chief, apparently. Could be a technicality…

          • admin September 6, 2017, 2:17 AM

Well, that makes her a princess in my book, but yes, technicality. 😀

    • admin September 5, 2017, 3:02 PM

Yeah, we sorely need that! 😀

I’m really looking forward to this. Would love to have a collection of all the princesses. I hope she will also have a version that’s more warrior like! Any ideas when the sets would be available?

    • admin September 5, 2017, 3:06 PM

No idea on release. It wasn’t even announced yet. The only indication that Mulan may be coming is this video.

Mulan would be a great addition to the Disney line. She is such a unique princess, and I could see some really good sets coming out of this.

Mulan was also on the television show Once upon a time. One of my favorite shows. I just started watching it on NETFLIX . ( I am on season four). That would be cool to have as a mini fig .

Hm… glad to talk with someone who is more familiar with the story! What sets would you see coming out this?

  • Legostuff71 September 5, 2017, 3:59 PM

There has to be Snowwhite and the seven dwarves ( yes,all seven dwarves ). That would be awesome. The way I would make the set is to make the dwarves cottage .

    • admin September 6, 2017, 2:17 AM

Would love to see some dwarves! 😀

The other theme that needs to do ( sorry, a little off topic ) Sesame street play sets. I would love to get me a Grover mini fig. I mean , both LEGO and sesame street are used as learning tools. I fact I grew up on sesame Street.it would be a great way to expand the learning process

    • Håkan September 5, 2017, 7:01 PM

Hmmm, seems like Sesame Workshop is a different company from The Muppets Studio. TMS is owned by Disney, but SW is a distinct non-profit company.

Another issue is that Sesame Street might be a primarily American thing. There have been international spinoffs, but they’ve often changed characters in the core cast, and so on…

  • Legostuff71 September 5, 2017, 7:17 PM

I would think that Kermit the frog is probably just as recognizable as Mickey Mouse . It was just a thought. It would be nice to have sesame street in a LEGO set.

    • Håkan September 5, 2017, 11:21 PM

Yeah, Kermit is a main Muppet, though. The Muppets might be better known.

Here in Sweden, I think Cookie Monster might be the most widely recognized due to his unrestrained hedonism, but the other cast, not so much, and not more among pre-schoolers than adult pop culture geeks…

  • Legostuff71 September 6, 2017, 2:30 AM

Kermit the frog started on sesame street, the Muppets show didn’t come until a few years later. Again, I just thought it would be a good theme. That’s all.

  • Legostuff71 September 6, 2017, 2:39 AM

….it doesn’t mean we ( as adults) can’t learn about the characters. We are learning about new characters from LEGO all most all the time .It could be interesting.

  • LEGOJeff September 6, 2017, 5:16 AM

The Disney line needs some more substantial sets that are not all pink and light blue. The Disney Castle is great, and would love to have more sets like that (maybe not as big) that appeal to a wider audience.

    • Håkan September 6, 2017, 12:21 PM

Overall, I don’t think the pink and light blue color schemes are ‘that’ ubiquitous. There are few ‘substantial’ sets, however.
