The end of the year is always exciting for LEGO fans, not just because of the clearance sales, discounts, and other specials, but because this is also usually the first time we get a glimpse of sets for the new year. Some of these new sets even get released early, so you might be able to put them under the Christmas tree. Also, as an unusual move, this year LEGO decided to release two new large models for the holiday season, one of which became available a couple of days ago, and the other will be released on Monday. Today, we will briefly mention the two new sets (with full reviews later), and also talk a bit about the 2018 sets. 🙂
The new set we got for Black Friday is the #70922 LEGO Batman Movie The Joker Manor a massive model with 3444 pieces. It looks incredibly fun, but it’s most significant feature is the new type of rollercoaster track pieces and cars. This makes it fairly certain that we will be getting a rollercoaster in the LEGO Creator Fairground series next year. There is an excellent review of both the manor and the new rollercoaster parts at the BrothersBrick (see set review, see rollercoaster review), and you can purchase the set at the LEGO Batman Movie section of the Online LEGO Shop.
For Cyber Monday, we are getting another large model; the #10256 LEGO Creator Taj Mahal. This is a re-release of the #10189 LEGO Taj Mahal from 2008. It is 5923 pieces, and the price is $369.99. You can see details and purchase it starting tomorrow at the LEGO Creator section of the Online LEGO Shop.
As far as the 2018 sets, there is a lot to talk about already as many of them are already listed in the Brickset database. Next year celebrates the 60th anniversary of the LEGO brick, so LEGO is releasing a new theme titled LEGO Building Bigger Thinking. They are basically the same as the LEGO Classic brick boxes with a printed 2×4 tile to commemorate the 60th anniversary. So far, there are five sets in the series. These will be excellent for those kids for free-building sessions.
The LEGO BrickHeadz line continues with a number of new characters, including the #41598 LEGO BrickHeadz The Flash, #41599 LEGO BrickHeadz Wonder Woman, #41600 LEGO BrickHeadz Aquaman, #41601 LEGO BrickHeadz Cyborg, #41602 LEGO BrickHeadz Rey, and #41603 LEGO BrickHeadz Kylo Ren. They are fun little characters to collect, and they are also great sources of special parts. You can find the current selection under the LEGO BrickHeadz section of the Online LEGO Shop.
Under the LEGO Architecture Skyline series one of the new sets is going to be the #21039 LEGO Architecture Shanghai, which you can see below, and another new set is the #21038 LEGO Architecture Las Vegas, which we don’t have a picture of as of yet. The LEGO Architecture Skyline series is a fantastic collection of some of the most iconic buildings of major cities. You can find the sets under the LEGO Architecture section of the Online LEGO Shop.
There is a lot to like about the 2018 LEGO City sets. The criminals are going to be hiding in the mountains, and we get new pieces like a beehive, tree trunk, and of course lots of police vehicles. The major sub-theme in LEGO City will be centered around mining with some really great mining vehicles and another use of the new rollercoaster system. Another notable set is the #60182 LEGO City Pickup & Caravan. Look out for them under the LEGO City section of the Online LEGO Shop.
LEGO Creator will get a series of 3-in-1 sets, as usual. Some of the most interesting ones are the #31071 LEGO Creator Drone Explorer, the #31073 LEGO Creator Mythical Creatures, the #31079 LEGO Creator Sunshine Surfer Van, and the #31081 LEGO Creator Modular Skate House. They should be listed soon under the LEGO Creator section of the Online LEGO Shop.
A few LEGO Super Heroes sets have also been revealed, nothing from Marvel yet, but from DC Super Heroes we can see a few. I think the #76097 LEGO Super Heroes Lex Luthor Mech Takedown looks pretty good. It will be listed under the LEGO DC Super Heroes section of the Online LEGO Shop.
The LEGO Batman Movie also gets a new wave of sets, including the fun and funny #70920 LEGO Batman Movie Egghead Mech Food Fight, the sleek looking #70923 LEGO Batman Movie The Bat-Space Shuttle (in black, of course), and a second series of Collectible Minifigures. You will be able to find them under the LEGO Batman Movie section of the Online LEGO Shop.
Disney is also bringing us some great LEGO sets! I’m particularly excited about the #41151 LEGO Disney Mulan’s Training Day, although I would have preferred her in warrior armor. There are also two very nice large castles; the #41152 LEGO Disney Sleeping Beauty’s Fairytale Castle and the #41154 LEGO Disney Cinderella’s Dream Castle. I also really like the #41153 LEGO Disney Ariel’s Royal Celebration Boat. You should be able to find them soon under the LEGO Disney section of the Online LEGO Shop.
LEGO Friends is introducing a new box design with an updated look of the five main friends. The most drastic changes are done on Olivia, who is now wearing glasses and has a darker skin tone (either she got a tan, or she is a fake Olivia while the original one got kidnapped by aliens). The sets include vehicles, tree houses, cafes and more. My favorites are the #41339 LEGO Friends Mia’s Camper Van and the #41340 LEGO Friends Friendship House. They will be listed under the LEGO Friends section of the Online LEGO Shop.
LEGO Nexo Knights continues with more sets, including some really cool black and translucent-neon-green vehicles for the badguys, and an awesome tank looking thing for the knights. Find the currently available sets under the LEGO Nexo Knights section of the Online LEGO Shop.
LEGO Ninjago is also getting new sets, and a new series of Spinjitzu spinners. The #70643 LEGO Ninjago Temple of Resurrection, pictured below, is particularly nice. They will be added to the LEGO Ninjago section of the Online LEGO Shop.
Of course, LEGO Star Wars is going to start the new year with a series of new sets, including those related to Star Wars: The Last Jedi. We will also be getting some new large action figures. My understanding is that some of these sets will be available before the end of the year at various retailers and at the LEGO Star Wars section of the Online LEGO Shop.
After a somewhat lackluster year for LEGO Technic (which is surprising as 2017 was the 40th anniversary of the theme), 2018 looks incredibly strong with some really great sets like the #42074 LEGO Technic Racing Yacht, the #42075 LEGO Technic First Responder, the #42076 LEGO Technic Hovercraft, and the #42078 LEGO Technic Mack Anthem. Look out for them under the LEGO Technic section of the Online LEGO Shop.
There are also going to be new sets under the LEGO Minecraft, LEGO Juniors, and LEGO Speed Champions line, as well as sets related to the Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom movie, but there are no pictures of them yet. If you would like to see images of the 2018 sets that have already been revealed, make sure you visit the Brickset database, and also keep an eye on the new sets section of the Online LEGO Shop.
What do you think? Are you looking forward to any of the new 2018 LEGO sets? Which ones are your favorites? And what do you think of the LEGO Batman Movie Joker Manor and the LEGO Creator Taj Mahal? Are you getting either of them? Or both? Feel free to share your thoughts and discuss in the comment section below! 😉

Woa! That Technic truck! Must be one of the best Technic sets ever
I agree. That’s probably the best looking Technic set of all time. Can’t wait to see it in more detail. Is it motorized?
The box doesn’t show as having Power Functions, but I’m sure many people will hook it up to PF. There are many alternate pictures for the set on Brickset, so you can see it from every angle. Check them out. I think you will enjoy them: https://brickset.com/sets/42078-1/Mack-Anthem
Yeah, it’s spectacular, isn’t it? 😀
Ok, the Creator sets and the city sets are speaking to me ,they are saying “buy me “. I have a lot of campers and camp sites. So this would be great to expand my forest theme. The Mountain police can go with my Forest and swamp police. This is going to be great!
I actually thought of you when I first saw the Mountain Police sets. I thought it would go well with your Forest and Swamp Police set up you are always talking about. 🙂
I also love campers, and now we will have everything from motorhomes to trailers to 5th wheels! 😀
Thanks, I am interested in some of the other sets as well( NINJAGO , Star Wars and superheroes) but I seem the most happiest with the city themes. Now that I know what Santa is getting me ( wink ,wink NINJAGO city and jungle exploration site.) I am pacing myself on the other themes .I don’t want a Lego overload. I also don’t build things right away. To own it is half the battle. The building can happen whenever . Lol.
In my experience, a sign of being overloaded is when I have several unopened sets that just sits around. Which can especially happen this time of the year. 😀
New rollercoaster pieces?? Yes!!!!
Pretty awesome, aren’t they? 😀
A new series of lego Batman minifigs?! Yes please! Also looking forward to that shuttle too.
Yeah, that shuttle is sweet. Only Batman can have such awesome space transportation. 😀
Mmm, a little pricey on some new sets. What thought to be a $30. Set turns out to be $40. I think Lego is taking a risk . The prices aren’t bad they are doable. My piggy bank is going to squeal more next year . Lol.
You may want to wait some. There is Double VIP Points for a couple of days in December. Or, just wait to get them until next year. They will be around for a while. No need to make piggy suffer. ;O
What time do sets go on sale? Really interested in the Taj Mahal set. Monday at 12am eastern? I don’t want it to sell out in 2 mins and I miss it when I wake up in the morning. 🙁
Yes, that is correct. Typically new sets go on sale midnight EST. I would definitely purchase this one right away, if you don’t mind staying up tonight. LEGO has been already having problems with keeping up with demand in the past six months, and with the holiday season it is going to be even worse.
Thanks! Will try to stay up.
Good luck! 🙂
Score! I got one. 👍🏽
Awesome! Congratulations! It’s a gorgeous set! 😀

Lego friends: I am really sorry Olivia got so drastically changed. She was the closest to my daughter’s combination of hair/ skin/ eyes. I just wish LEGO had simply introduced a new character into the storyline.
Alexandra, thanks for sharing that. This is exactly what I feared. There is a discussion on the topic with LEGO on the Ambassador Forum, and I will definitely mention your feedback. Thanks for sharing.
Ah, yeah, I guess it could be a sensitive issue. And also reverting the decision, as well…
Naw, I’m quite sure Mark Stafford wouldn’t mind. He used both colors in the sets he designed. He just won’t be known any more as “the guy who killed teal”. 😈
Admin is a natural born politician!
LOL! I hope not! I try to stay away from politics as far as possible. 😀
Hi Admin, my perspective is rather specific, I am not an AFOL, I buy for my daughter and have been known to buy more than she could ever build!! Having said that, it is important to motivate a 6 year old girl to want (to build) Lego as here in Portugal Lego tend to be for boys (yes, at six my daughter already keeps to herself about liking lego). And I guess all parents are aware of the potential of Lego for skill development. That is why I also love American Girl and Monster High by Mega Bloks, and loved Friends when they appeared (I bought the first Olivia workshop when she was months old and gave it to her when she was 4). I buy Creator / Architecture sets to give my husband and for myself but all to motivate her not really as a hobby. So when her Lego friend avatar or doppelganger disappears, Lego are really making my job harder!! I am really disappointed as this was the Friend that matched her and was the STEM Friend, not the puppy loving or artsy Friend 🙂 What more could a parent wish for 🙂 So my advise to Lego: just create new Friends!!
Alexanda, thanks for sharing! Very good points. The LEGO Friends team responded to the concerns of the community, and I’m going to publish it next week. Basically they are saying that kids they tested the products with wanted more diversity. This is fine, however I agree that they should just have added new characters instead of changing/replacing old ones. Anyway, we will talk about it more in a few days, so if you have further feedback you would like me to share directly with LEGO just let me know.
Thanks, admin, I really have no further feedback. I like Lego friends, I like diversity and diverse characters (really liked Mulan for instance), I like characters with glasses (I wear them and once read about a mom who bought lots of minifigure heads with glasses because her daughter uses glasses and she wanted a relateable lego head; inspired by this, I also bought dozens of female lego heads and most of our City sets have girls in them – our space sets all have girl astronauts!!) but I am not pleased with the change in Olivia.
By the way, in case you need a specific perspective from a mom fan of lego (MFL 🙂 I am happy to share. 🙂
Alexandra, all good points! At least Olivia is now wearing glasses, so they got that right. I was thinking that maybe we can keep old Olivia from the previous sets, and use new Olivia as a completely different person. Even rename her, or something. 🙂
As far as MFL thoughts, definitely! If you ever would like to share, feel free to write up an article, email it to me (just hit the little round envelop button in the upper left corner to email me directly) and I will publish it for you. LEGO loves to hear directly from children and parents! 😀
And to nobody’s surprise, The Taj Mahal is already on backorder
Yep, but backorder is still better than out of stock. It means you can still buy it, but there might be a delay in delivering. I would highly recommend getting this set on backorder, because it will very likely go in the direction of the Saturn V and Falcon – meaning, not available at all. LEGO is having some really major problems with keeping stuff in stock. 🙁
