It was recently announced at the LEGO Ambassador Network that there are some changes happening to the very popular free LEGO Digital Designer software. Below are the details. It is nice to see that LEGO is still maintaining LDD, and hopefully they will continue to do so in the future. 🙂
The LEGO Digital Designer development team has been working on the new gallery feature of the software, which will be launched this week. The new gallery will be empty when launched, and moving forward, users of LDD will be saving their models to the hard drive of their computer, and then uploading them to the gallery. This means that if you have any content stored in the current LDD gallery that you wish to save, please save the content to your hard drive immediately!
This also means that if you are working on a model right now, you need to finish that model, because it is not possible to upload the .lxf format to the new gallery and continue building on a model from the old gallery. You can upload your creation again at the new gallery in a .png (image) format, but your creation will not be moved to the new gallery automatically.
The following is not part of the official announcement by LEGO, but it was mentioned in the same forum post. There is a very interesting quick tutorial on how to unlock LDD’s developer mode and all of its useful functions. If you like to build advanced models or use “illegal” building techniques, I think you will appreciate it. Check it out below.
If you have any questions, comments and feedback about the changes to LDD, feel free to post them below, the development team is happy to answer them. However, they won’t be able to answer any questions about the future of LDD. That’s still a secret. 😉

Will I be able to keep my old models on the current version and continue building on the .lxf format?
Let me ask that on the Ambassador Forum. Good question.
I just checked, and somebody else already asked the same question on the Ambassador Forum. We are waiting for a response from the LDD team.
Alright, thanks!
Important stuff. Thanks for alerting us. So, to be safe, we should always back up our models, right? Even on the new system?
Yeah, that’s always a good practice.
OK. Backing up now.
That developers mode looks interesting! I was not aware of it.
Yeah, some great tricks there! 😀
