LEGO Technic Top Gear Set Coming Soon!

Today, the LEGO Group revealed the first ever LEGO Technic Top Gear set in partnership with BBC Studios at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Top Gear is the world’s biggest and longest-running motoring entertainment shows, spanning 42 years. It has a following of an estimated 350 million viewers globally, across 200+ territories, making it one of the world’s most widely watched factual TV programs. The latest series of Top Gear featuring Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff, Paddy McGuinness, and Chris Harris has been by far the best performing series of recent years, making it BBC TWO’s biggest show so far in 2019. Below is all the info we know about the upcoming LEGO Technic Top Gear set.

The #42109 LEGO Technic App Controlled Top Gear Rally Car is an authentic looking GT Rally car for ages 9+ and will be available globally from December 26, 2019. LEGO Technic designers joined forces with the BBC Top Gear team to co-design the body of the car and accompanying stickers to create an ultra-realistic and fast looking racer that fans are sure to enjoy building at home.

The model is remote controlled via the LEGO Technic CONTROL+ app and contains functions such as steering, multi-touch control, and gyro control, as well as different challenges and achievements to deliver a thrilling, immersive play experience. The rally car comes complete with one large motor, one XL motor and one Bluetooth controlled smart hub.

“It’s exciting to have collaborated with LEGO Technic on this and it’s a very natural fit for the Top Gear brand. The LEGO Technic Top Gear Rally Car is the result of several months of hard work from the LEGO and BBC Studios teams and we can’t wait to see it on the shelves soon,” said Jason Easy, Head of Licensing UK, BBC Studios. Niels Henrik Horsted, Marketing Director for LEGO Technic added: “We are really excited to finally reveal the App-Controlled LEGO Technic Top Gear Rally Car. The car offers a challenging build for ages 9+ who are into authentic play and intrigued about how things work. The CONTROL+ app gives an extensive play experience with several different play modes and exciting challenges.”

The #42109 LEGO Technic App Controlled Top Gear Rally Car includes 463 elements, will be available on December 26th, and the price is $129.00 USD/£124.99 (pricing in other currencies is not yet available). For further details, check the LEGO Technic section of the Online LEGO Shop.

I like it. I like it a lot. But why is it so expensive?

I don’t get why they had to do this just for a generic rally car. Technic can already make those without the need of additional licensing fees.

Cool, but what’s the point of making this Top Gear branded? Just make a regular rally car for a chaper price and with less stickers.

It’s not a bad car, but with the new PF it’s too expensive. They should have included a second car (either in the same set or separately), without PF to make it more affordable. Some people already have the PF parts and they don’t want to pay an extra $100 to get them again.

Too expensive. And I don’t like the hood. The rest is okay, I guess. Does it have suspension?

It doesn’t look like it has suspension. I’m looking at the blueprint.

It’s expensive, and it has no remote. Only the app, which has a limited lifespan. And the car is very generic. It’s still cheaper than the x-treme offroader though, if you just want to get the powered up parts. I don’t know. I would get it if the price is around $80.

I think it looks great. Expensive, but great. Maybe they’re just testing what prices the market will accept. The release is kind of weird though. Why the day after Christmas?

It’s really January release, but they just making it available a little bit earlier than the other 2020 Technic sets.

Are there going to be more sets, or is this the only one with the top gear license? I kinda would like to have two. I agree with others that the price is too high. And you don’t even get a traditonal remote. You can only use the app.

It looks similar in size to the orange Chevrolet Corvette. Which means it’s also the same size as the blue car that comes with the car transporter. Maybe the plan is to release a bunch of cars that the car transporter can carry? 😀

As far as I know, this is the most compact and cheapest Technic car with the new Powered Up Control+ system. If you think about it that way, it’s not a bad deal. Having said that I would like it to be cheaper too. At $80 or $90, I would buy it right away.
