Yesterday, LEGO announced a whole new wave of LEGO Ninjago sets, based on the upcoming LEGO Ninjago: Dragons Rising TV show. One of the new sets that have created a lot of excitement is the #71799 LEGO Ninjago City Markets, the latest in the LEGO Ninjago City collection. So, let’s talk about this awesome set in more detail!
Just to recap, the #70620 LEGO Ninjago City set was the first in the collection with 4,867 pieces for the price of $299.99, and was released in 2017 to coincide with the debut of The LEGO Ninjago Movie. It brought a lot of new fans to the theme and it is still considered by many as the best of the series. The #70657 LEGO Ninjago City Docks with 3,553 pieces for the price of $229.99 was released in 2018 to expand the layout of the original set. LEGO Ninjago continued to thrive, so in 2121, LEGO released another set to add to the collection, the #71741 LEGO Ninjago City Gardens with 5,685 pieces for the price of $349.99. And now, in 2023, we are getting the biggest of them all in terms of piece-count; the #71799 LEGO Ninjago City Markets with a whopping 6,163 pieces for the surprisingly reasonable price of $369.99.
Interestingly, the new set doesn’t look particularly big at first glance. In fact, it is one of the shortest in the series. However, it is a full two baseplates wide and the buildings are substantial. It appears to have a better use of space with larger usable buildings, instead of the tiny spaces of the #71741 LEGO Ninjago City Gardens.
The 4-story model is crammed with shops, restaurants, offices, and apartments, including a bakery, a blacksmith’s, a general store, the Borg store, a karaoke club, and a rooftop food court. Several rooms can be removed to become separate play models. This is a great feature, as it makes the interiors more accessible. Overall, the set measures over 18 in. (46 cm) high, 20 in. (51 cm) wide, and 10 in. (25 cm) deep taking up two full baseplates.
To help the ninja travel around and to add some fun play-features and movement, there’s a cable car with two stations, an elevator, and a boat. Another fun play-feature is the functional toilet.
The model comes with 21 minifigures, including Blacksmith Kai, Urban Sora, Urban Arin, Detective Zane, Hounddog McBrag, Gayle Gossip, Chamille, Miss Demeanor, and Dareth.
In the video below, JANGBRiCKS discusses some of these features of the set as well as shares his personal opinion about them.
As it was mentioned in the press-release, the #71799 LEGO Ninjago City Markets (along with the other LEGO Ninjago Dragons Rising sets) will be available starting on June 4th. It’s worth noting that the #71799 LEGO Ninjago City Gardens is also still available, in case you haven’t gotten it already. You can find them both at the LEGO Ninjago section of the Online LEGO Shop.

Incredible set in my opinion.
So, are the lego ninjago city sets are more display or can it also be for play? Or Both? Of course my biggest problem is that I’m between a ninjago and a Dreamz place.
There are some play features, such as a functional cable car, elevator and toilet, although I suspect most buyers mostly would treat it as a display piece.
The size and cost of the thing feels a bit deterring for playing, basically…
I like it. It’s different. And I know Jang doesn’t like the toilet feature, but I think it’s brilliant. It’s certainly a conversation piece. Funny or serious.
I still like the two tallest sets the most. The original Ninjago city and the gardens. Even though this new set is called markets, I feel that the original Ninjago city had a lot more market activity. Maybe I’m getting jaded. Or designers can’t go beyond the awesomeness of the first set.
