The #75159 LEGO Star Wars Death Star includes over 200 extra pieces as well as three new minifigures. Below is the full press-release with pictures and details. 🙂

Rumors started circulating even before the #10188 LEGO Star Wars Death Star was retired that LEGO was going to release a new Death Star. Some people thought it will be related to the new Star Wars film, others speculated that it would be like the old #10143 LEGO Star Wars Death Star II display-model from 2005, and some LEGO fans reasoned that it will probably be just an updated re-release with new minifigures and improved building techniques. And this third group pretty much had it right; the #75159 LEGO Star Wars Death Star is basically the same thing as the original set, with updated minifigures.

LEGO Star Wars Death Star Comparison 1

It is clear that LEGO felt that there was no need to change the original set, besides freshening up the minifigures and adding a couple of other small changes. On the box image the Death Star is even oriented almost exactly the same way as on the original set, to emphasize that it is the same thing. Nobody was expecting that the sets will be this similar. In fact, when the first images of the new set leaked in mid-August, most LEGO fans thought it was a prank. Even with a re-release people expected that LEGO will at least update some of the more unsightly features of the original model, like the stepped curves. Personally, I would have loved if the outside would be covered with opening panels!

The collection of minifigures is nice, but I don’t think it justifies a $100 increase in price. Just to give you some comparison here is some data. The #10188 LEGO Star Wars Death Star was released in 2008 with 3,803 pieces and 24 minifigs/droids for a price of $400 (10.5 cents a piece). The #75159 LEGO Star Wars Death Star comes with 4,016 pieces (213 more pieces) and 25 minifigs/droids for a price of $500 (12.4 cents a piece). The #71040 LEGO Disney Castle is 4,080 pieces (so 64 pieces more than the new Death Star) for a price of $350 (8.6 cents a piece). From this perspective, it might make more sense to just buy the old Death Star (which still sells for around $400 on the secondary market and prices will likely drop once the new one is out), and maybe add a few updated minifigs. Or if you just want to get a big display set, the LEGO Disney Castle is a much better deal. Below are a few more comparison pictures of the two sets (old on the left, new on the right).

What do you think? How do you like the new LEGO Star Wars Death Star? Do you think it is worth getting it? What interesting changes and updates you notice between the two sets? And how do you like the minifigures? Do you have the previous version of the set? Feel free to share your thoughts and discuss in the comment section below! 😉

September 2016 – new LEGO sets & promotions

In August we got a very large number of new LEGO sets, so September is a more quiet month. This is a good thing though, as it allows LEGO fans to catch up on some of the new sets they have been saving up for. But the quiet doesn’t last that long, as on the 15th of the month LEGO VIP members get access to not one, but two brand new exclusive sets! And there are also a couple of promotions you might want to take advantage of. Below are the details of all the September LEGO shopping events. 🙂

LEGO Store Calendar September 2016

FREE LEGO NEXO KNIGHTS SET: From September 5th to the 18th you can get a free LEGO Nexo Knights Ultimate Lavaria set with purchases of $50 or more. If you haven’t tried out LEGO Nexo Knights yet, this is a good way to get one of the main characters, and some of the interesting new accessories. This offer is valid on all LEGO purchases, not just on LEGO Nexo Knights sets. It will be added to your shopping cart when you are ready to check out at the Online LEGO Shop.

#70335 LEGO Nexo Knights

DOUBLE VIP POINTS ON NEXO KNIGHTS SETS: The second promotion is also related to LEGO Nexo Knights this month. You can earn Double VIP Points on the #70321 LEGO Nexo Knights General Magmar’s Siege Machine of Doom (love that name!), and the #70315 LEGO Nexo Knights Clay’s Rumble Blade. Also, make sure you check out all the other awesome new LEGO Nexo Knights sets that were released last month (if you haven’t done so already). Some of the most notable ones are the #70321 LEGO Nexo Knights General Magamar’s Siege Machine of Doom, the #70322 LEGO Nexo Knights Axl’s Tower Carrier, the #70323 LEGO Nexo Knights Jestro’s Volcano Lair, and the #70326 LEGO Nexo Knights The Black Knight Mech. LEGO DISNEY CASTLE AVAILABLE: The LEGO VIP early access quantities of the #71040 LEGO Disney Castle sold out within just a few days when the set became available for LEGO VIP members last month. So yeah, this castle is hot, and all reviews on it have been glowingly positive. It is now available for everyone, not just LEGO VIP members, and hopefully LEGO will be able to keep up with the demand. As I mentioned last month, I expect this set to be backordered and hard-to-find as we get closer to the holidays , so it you really want one, I would suggest to get it as soon as possible. You can find it under the LEGO Exclusives section of the Online LEGO Shop.

LEGO HOLIDAY TRAIN VIP EARLY ACCESS: The #10254 LEGO Creator Winter Holiday Train is going to be available for LEGO VIP members on the 15th of September. This is one of the nicest holiday sets LEGO ever released, and it is a perfect match for the LEGO Winter Village series. Or you can just set it up to run around the Christmas tree or your LEGO city. You also get a full circle of train-tracks, and the train can be motorized with LEGO Power Functions. I expect this set to be very popular and hard-to-find. You can read more about it and watch the designer video here: LEGO Holiday Train Pictures & More! It will be available under the LEGO Creator section of the Online LEGO Shop.

LEGO STAR WARS DEATH STAR VIP EARLY ACCESS: The second set that LEGO VIP members will have early access to on the 15th of September is the new version of the #75159 LEGO Star Wars Death Star. The set is basically the exact same thing as the #10188 LEGO Star Wars Death Star that was released back in 2008 and remained a best-seller until its recent retirement. The new version of the set has a slightly larger part-count, and updated minifigures. If you don’t own the original set, you might want to check it out. It will be available under the LEGO Star Wars section of the Online LEGO Shop.

LEGO CREATOR VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE: The #10252 LEGO Creator Volkswagen Beetle became available last month, but I wanted to highlight it here again because I think it is one of the nicest sets of the year, and with a very reasonable price. You can find a full review of the set here: LEGO Volkswagen Beetle Review & Thoughts. It is available under the LEGO Creator section of the Online LEGO Shop.

#10252 LEGO Creator Volkswagen Beetle Box

NEW 2016 LEGO NINJAGO SETS: Nine new LEGO Ninjago sets released last month, and I thought to do a bit of a recap to make sure you don’t miss out. The #70593 LEGO Ninjago Green NRG Dragon comes with an awesome dragon, and the #70594 LEGO Ninjago Lighthouse Siege got a nice Asian-style building. You can find them at the LEGO Elves section of the Online LEGO Shop.

Shop LEGO Elves September Sets

As you can see, there are plenty of new LEGO sets to choose from. And this might also be a good time to start planning for the holidays and make a wish-list for Santa. If you have any of the large exclusive sets on your list like the #10252 LEGO Creator Volkswagen Beetle, the #71040 LEGO Disney Castle, the #10253 LEGO Creator Big Ben, the #42056 LEGO Technic Porsche 911 GT3 RS, and some of the earlier large sets, I would suggest that you get those as soon as possible, as they will likely be backordered by the time the holiday shopping season comes around. The smaller and wider release sets should be readily available at most LEGO retailers and the Online LEGO Shop. Also, remember that LEGO lowered the minimum threshold for free shipping from $75 to $35. So if you just want to make a smaller purchase now it is easier to qualify for free shipping.

LEGO Store Calendar September 2016 Details

And as I always mention, it is a good idea to take a look at the Sales & Deals section of the Online LEGO Shop before you check out. You can often find some great deals there on interesting older sets that are being retired. Last time I checked there was a large number of LEGO Ninjago, LEGO Nexo Knights, LEGO Angry Birds, LEGO Friends and more sets on  clearance. You can find them all under the Sales & Deals section of the Online LEGO Shop.
