August 2016 – new LEGO sets & promotions

While there are not a whole lot of promotions this month, a very large number of long-awaited LEGO sets are getting released. Below we will discuss all the new LEGO sets and promotions of the month to make sure you don’t miss out on anything. 🙂

LEGO Store Calendar August 2016

FREE LEGO CREATOR MINI LONDON BUS: From August 1st to the 15th, the free exclusive #40220 LEGO Creator Mini London Bus is available with purchases of $75 or more, while supplies last. This is a nice little extra for a month that is undoubtedly going to be expensive for LEGO fans with all the new sets out. Once your order meets the minimum threshold, the set will be automatically added to your shopping cart at the Online LEGO Shop.

FREE LEGO DISNEY PRINCESS SET: During the entire month of August you can get a free #30397 LEGO Disney Princess Olaf’s Summertime Fun polybag with any LEGO Disney Princess purchase. August is going to be big for LEGO Disney with the release of the #71040 LEGO Disney Castle, a couple of other new sets, and the re-release of the very popular LEGO Disney Collectible Minifigures. You can find all the sets under the LEGO Disney Princess section of the Online LEGO Shop.

#71040 LEGO Disney Castle 2

LEGO DISNEY CASTLE & MORE: Speaking of the #71040 LEGO Disney Castle, it will be available for LEGO VIP members on August 17th, with general release on September 1st. This is one of the most anticipated sets of the year, and I heard from a number of people that it is going to be a day one purchase for them. I expect this set to be backordered and hard-to-find shortly after release (especially with the holiday season coming up), so if you really want one, I would suggest to get it as soon as possible. You can read more about the set here: LEGO Disney Castle Designer-Video. Two other new LEGO Disney Castle sets include the #41065 LEGO Disney Castle Rapunzel’s Best Day Ever, and the #41067 LEGO Disney Castle Belle’s Enchanted Castle. You can find them all under the LEGO Disney Princess section of the Online LEGO Shop. Shop LEGO Disney Princess Summer

LEGO CREATOR VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE: The #10252 LEGO Creator Volkswagen Beetle is now available for everyone, not just LEGO VIP members. This is definitely one of the best sets of the year. It provides a very interesting building experience, comes with great colors and parts-selection, and looks gorgeous on display. The price is also very reasonable. You can find it under the LEGO Creator section of the Online LEGO Shop.

#10252 LEGO Creator Volkswagen Beetle Box

NEW 2016 LEGO NINJAGO SETS: There are nine very unique new sets in the LEGO Ninjago line. The #70588 LEGO Ninjago Titanium Ninja Tumbler would be envied even by Batman! The #70589 LEGO Ninjago Rock Raider, the #70590 LEGO Ninjago Airjitzu Battle Grounds, the #70591 LEGO Ninjago Kryptarium Prison Breakout, and the #70592 LEGO Ninjago Salvage M.E.C. are some of the small to mid-size sets, but they all have interesting features. The #70593 LEGO Ninjago Green NRG Dragon comes with an awesome dragon, and the #70594 LEGO Ninjago Lighthouse Siege got a nice Asian-style building. The two largest sets are the #70595 LEGO Ninjago Ultra Stealth Raider, and the #70596 LEGO Ninjago Samurai X Cave Chaos. This last set would also be an envy of Batman! You can find them all under the LEGO Ninjago section of the Online LEGO Shop.

NEW 2016 LEGO NEXO KNIGHTS SETS: LEGO Nexo Knights is getting another wave with eleven great sets. There are a number of smaller sets in the LEGO Nexo Knights Ultimate series, and the large sets include the #70321 LEGO Nexo Knights General Magamar’s Siege Machine of Doom, the #70322 LEGO Nexo Knights Axl’s Tower Carrier, the #70323 LEGO Nexo Knights Jestro’s Volcano Lair, and the #70326 LEGO Nexo Knights The Black Knight Mech. I have to say I quite like all the badguy sets. The Volcano Lair in particular is a gorgeously big and evil. And we get more Hover Horses! You can find all the new sets under the LEGO Nexo Knights section of the Online LEGO Shop.

NEW 2016 LEGO SUPER HEROES SETS: There are three new sets for LEGO Marvel fans and two new sets for LEGO DC Super Heroes fans. The most anticipated is the #76057 LEGO Spider-Man: Web Warriors Ultimate Bridge Battle with a very large and detailed bridge. Two other Spider-Man sets are the #76058 LEGO Spider-Man: Ghost Rider Team-up, and the #76059 LEGO Spider-Man: Doc Ock’s Tentacle Trap. And Batman fans get the #76054 LEGO Batman Scarecrow Harvest of Fear, and the #76055 LEGO Batman Killer Croc Sewer Smash. You can find them all under the LEGO Marver Super Heroes and LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes sections of the Online LEGO Shop.

NEW 2016 LEGO CITY SETS: The two largest LEGO City Volcano sets are also now available. In my opinion these two are the best in the entire series, and include lots of vehicles and some pretty large volcanoes. The two sets are the #60124 LEGO City Volcano Exploration Base, and the #60125 LEGO Volcano Heavy-lift Helicopter. Just one of these would provide plenty of fun! Another large LEGO City set that just became available is the #60104 LEGO City Airport Passenger Terminal. It comes with a really nice large airplane. You can find all the new sets under the LEGO City section of the Online LEGO Shop.

Shop LEGO City Volcano Sets

NEW 2016 LEGO TECHNIC SETS: The #42055 LEGO Technic Bucket Wheel Excavator is now available! With almost four thousand pieces, this is the largest LEGO Technic set ever released. LEGO Technic fans have been eagerly awaiting it since it was first revealed at the toy fairs at the beginning of the year. It is massive and motorized! There are some other really excellent new LEGO Technic sets, including the #42054 LEGO Technic CLAAS XERION 5000 TRAC VC, and the #42053 LEGO Technic Volvo EW160E. You can find them at the LEGO Technic section of the Online LEGO Shop.

NEW 2016 LEGO FRIENDS SETS: The LEGO Friends Amusement Park sets are now available! This includes the #41127 LEGO Friends Amusement Park Arcade, the #41128 LEGO Friends Amusement Park Space Ride, the #41129 LEGO Friends Amusement Park Hot Dog Van, the #41130 LEGO Friends Amusement Park Roller Coaster, and the #41133 LEGO Friends Amusement Park Bumper Cars. There are some other noteworthy new LEGO Friends sets, including the #41126 LEGO Friends Heartlake Riding Club, the #41132 LEGO Friends Heartlake Party Shop, the #41134 LEGO Friends Heartlake Performance School, and more. This is a very strong month for LEGO Friends with some excellent sets. You can find them all under the LEGO Friends section of the Online LEGO Shop.

NEW 2016 LEGO ELVES SETS: LEGO Elves continues with the dragons theme with some beautiful large sets. This is also the first time darker elements are introduced into the theme. The new sets include the #41177 LEGO Elves Precious Crystal Mine, the #41178 LEGO Elves Dragon Sanctuary, the #41179 LEGO Elves Queen Dragon’s Rescue, the #41180 LEGO Elves Ragana’s Magic Shadow Castle. You can find them all under the LEGO Elves section of the Online LEGO Shop.

Shop LEGO Elves

As you can see, this month is filled with new LEGO sets, so there is plenty to choose from. And this might also be a good time to start planning for the holidays and make a wish-list for Santa. If you have any of the large exclusive sets on your list like the #10252 LEGO Creator Volkswagen Beetle, the #71040 LEGO Disney Castle, the #10253 LEGO Creator Big Ben, the #42056 LEGO Technic Porsche 911 GT3 RS, and some of the earlier large sets, I would suggest that you get those as soon as possible, as they will likely be backordered by the time the holiday shopping season comes around. The smaller and wider release sets should be readily available at most LEGO retailers and the Online LEGO Shop. Also, remember that LEGO lowered the minimum threshold for free shipping from $75 to $35. So if you just want to make a smaller purchase now it is easier to qualify for free shipping.

LEGO Store Calendar August 2016 Events

And as I always mention, it is a good idea to take a look at the Sales & Deals section of the Online LEGO Shop before you check out. You can often find some great deals there on interesting older sets that are being retired. For example last time I checked there was a large LEGO BIONICLE and LEGO Dimensions clearance. You can find them all under the Sales & Deals section of the Online LEGO Shop.

Guide to feeling for LEGO Minifigs Series 16

(Written by William)

While LEGO Minifigures Series 16 was originally scheduled for release in September, they are already available at various LEGO retailers and the Online LEGO Shop. No official explanation was given for this change, however various sources have been mentioning that LEGO may be reissuing the LEGO Collectible Disney Minifigures in September to coincide with the release of the #71040 LEGO Disney Castle. Both Series 16 and the Disney Series are excellent, so all of this is good news for LEGO fans. 🙂

LEGO Minifigures Series 16

As this is a brand new series with an earlier than usual release, I’m also going to include for you the video-review by JANGBRiCKS, so you can take a close look at each character. Then we will discuss how to identify them in the blind bags.

LEGO Minifigures Series 16 Arabian

LEGO Minifigures Series 16 Desert Warrior: The best way to identify this minifig is by locating his scimitar. It is a wide, and bit flimsy blade, that is a bit hard to find due to its flatness. However once you do find a blade, the only other minifig with a sword is the Pirate, which helps with narrowing down the options. Keep in mind that the Ice Queen also got two blade-like accessories, but she also comes with a slope-dress that is very easy to identify.

LEGO Minifigures Series 16 BabysitterLEGO Minifigures Series 16 Babysitter: The best accessory to search for to identify this minifig is the baby-bottle. It feels like a thin, tall, and slightly indented mug. If you are familiar with the baby from the #60134 LEGO Fun in the Park – City People Pack, you might feel for that too, but in my experience it is quite difficult to identify (keep in mind that the baby comes in two pieces; a tiny body and even tinier head). If you think you found the bottle, you can further verify the babysitter by identifying her hairpiece.

LEGO Minifigures Series 16 BananaLEGO Minifigures Series 16 Banana Guy: The banana costume is a very large piece, similar to the hotdog costume from LEGO Collectible Minifigures Series 13. It is also the largest piece in Series 16, so it is easy to identify. It feels a bit curved and bulges through the bag. This is a very popular minifigure, so it will likely become hard to find.

LEGO Minifigures Series 16 CyborgLEGO Minifigures Series 16 Cyborg: You may run across the armor piece first, but do to the strange shape, it is not the most ideal piece for identification. Instead, it is best to look for the double-barreled handgun. If you think you found it, you can further verify by locating the small 1×1 round plate. If you got both of those, you have the Cyborg.

LEGO Minifigures SEries 16 Dog ShowLEGO Minifigures Series 16 Dog Show Winner: Go straight for the trophy, as it is the easiest piece to identify. If you are unfamiliar with its shape, it feels like the LEGO goblet, but with a couple of handles added to the sides. The dog is a brand new design, so it may be a bit hard to identify. However it is very cute and should make this packet popular.

LEGO Minifigures Series 16 HikerLEGO Minifigures Series 16 Hiker: Start by locating the 2×2 tile used for the map. Then look for the 1×1 tile used for the compass. You can also try feeling for the backpack, but it is a new piece, so your fingers might get confused by the shape. Locating both of the tiles is a faster and more accurate way to identify this minifigure.

LEGO Minifigures Series 16 Ice QueenLEGO Minifigures Series 16 Ice Queen: This is the easiest minifigure to identify in the series; find the dress-slope and you are done. No other minifig comes with a similar piece, so you can’t mix it up with anything else. You don’t even have to worry about trying to identify her other accessories. A beautiful minifigure indeed.

LEGO Minifigures Series 16 DevilLEGO Minifigures Series 16 Cute Little Devil: This little costumed character comes with quite a few accessories. The easiest to identify is probably the pitchfork. Other options are the bucket-handle and the wings. However you are less likely to go wrong if you focus on finding the pitchfork first, as there are no other pieces in the series to mix it up with.

LEGO Minifigures Series 16 BoxerLEGO Minifigures Series 16 Kickboxer: This minifigure comes with a 1×1 round brick to hold up her headgear when she is not wearing it. If you find this piece, you can further verify by checking her torso and feeling for the bulky gloved hands. Consequently, you can also look for her long ponytail, but I recommend finding the 1×1 round brick first as it is an easy and familiar shape.

LEGO Minifigures Series 16 PinguinLEGO Minifigures Series 16 Penguin Boy: I would suggest to start out by finding the short legs. The only other minifigure with short legs is the Cute Little Devil, so all you need to do is tell them apart by the accessories. You can also look for the unique penguin arms on the torso. The skates are also unique, but they are very small and there are other similar small pieces in the series.

LEGO Minifigures Series 16 PirateLEGO Minifigures Series 16 Scallywag Pirate: Find the 2×2 tile first used for the map. From there you just need to make sure it is not the Spooky Boy’s book, or the Hiker’s map. So look for the Pirate’s cutlass. It is quite thin, but it does have a hilt that has a bit of shape to it. Remember not to mix it up with the Desert Warrior’s scimitar.

LEGo Minifigures Series 16 Robin HoodLEGO Minifigures Series 16 Rogue: The quiver seems to be the easiest accessory to feel for to find this minifigure. The bow is also a decent choice, but the quiver’s shape is much simpler to work your fingers around. The headgear is a brand new piece, and it is too similar to other accessories to positively identify.

LEGo Minifigures Series 16 Mariachi:arow: LEGO Minifigures Series 16 Mariachi: I originally thought the guitar would be the quickest way to identify this minifigure, but it turns out the sombrero is much easier. Just look for something large and round. There is no other similar piece in the series, so you can’t mix it up with anything else. The guitar is an excellent new accessory that should be very popular.

LEGO Minifigures Series 16 Spooky BoyLEGO Minifigures Series 16 Spooky Boy: The book is probably the easiest piece to look for. When open, it feels similar to the minifig stand that comes in each pack, so see if you can bend it to close. Or it might be already closed in the pack. Once you find the book, you can further identify by checking for the spider. It feels somewhat similar to a small LEGO bat.

LEGO Minifigures Series 16 SpyLEGO Minifigures Series 16 Spy: This minifigure comes with a lot of angled accessories. The gun is a bar with an angle, and so is the neck-bracket. However neither of them are particularly good for easy identification. Instead, look for the coiled rope, which is the most unique accessory for this minifig. From there, search for the special googles. It is shaped like a “C” with some extra texture at the center. I found this minifigure rather common in the series.

LEGO Minifigures Series 16 PhotographerLEGO Minifigures Series 16 Wildlife Photographer: The camera is probably the best accessory to look for. It is small, square-ish, and can’t really be confused with anything else in the series. You can do some additional verification by locating the 1×1 round plate used as the camera-lens. The small penguin and the hood feel interesting, but due to their complexity they can make identification slow and difficult. So it is best to stay with the simple pieces.

LEGO Minifigures Series 16 Collection

One way to quickly identify the above mentioned parts and accessories is to first shake the baggies so that all small parts fall into one corner. This way you can identify them quickly. It is also a good idea to have a printout of the minifigures with accessories that you can look at as a reference while you are searching for the minifigs you want. You can go through a whole box of Collectible Minifigures quite quickly following these simple methods, and as a bonus you will also improve your tactile skills! 😀

Hope this helps with hunting for the LEGO Series 16 minifigs! They should be available at all LEGO retailers and are also listed at the Online LEGO Shop. If you have your own tips and tricks on identifying them feel free to share in the comment section below! 😉
