Small & fun LEGO sets for the holidays!

Traditionally LEGO releases various sets for the holiday season. We have talked about the large holiday sets like the LEGO Winter Village series and the LEGO Advent Calendars (see links at the end of this post), and today I would like to cover the small holiday sets. These are fun little sets for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas that works great as small gift for family and friends, decorations for the holidays, or stocking-stuffers for Christmas. All of these sets are less than $10, so they are affordable too! 🙂

LEGO HALLOWEEN SETS: There are two Halloween related LEGO sets this year; one that is simply called the #850936 LEGO Halloween Set with a vampire minifig, a spooky casket, and a red spider. The decorations on all of them are great. This set only costs $8. The second Halloween set is the #40090 LEGO Halloween Bat. This is a particularly cute set with a brick-built chubby black bat and a pumpkin. This set is only $10.

LEGO THANSGIVING SET: There is only one small set for Thanksgiving this year, the #40091 LEGO Thanksgiving Turkey. This is another cute brick-built creature. I actually really like these brick-built animals; they not only make great decorations or gift, but they also provide excellent ways to learn new building techniques. Building animals – especially cute and fluffy ones – from square and rigid LEGO bricks is not an easy task, so there is some educational value here too!

LEGO CHRISTMAS SETS: Traditionally this is where you will find the largest selection, and this year is no exception. I think the cutest ones are the #40092 LEGO Reindeer and the #40093 LEGO Snowman – two other brick-built creatures for $10 each. Then there are a bunch of globes with small LEGO creations inside. These can work as Christmas tree decorations as well as small gifts. Most of them are very creative and include some nice LEGO elements. They are $8 each, or you can get the whole collection for $48. You can find them all under the Seasonal Section of the Online LEGO Shop.

And that wraps up the small LEGO holiday sets for this year. There is something for each holiday to brighten up your day. You might also want to try to make your own LEGO holiday decorations (see links at the end of this post for ideas and building instructions). And if you are interested in the larger holiday sets, you can check out the LEGO Advent Calendars and the LEGO Christmas Village sets at the Online LEGO Shop.

So what do you think? How do you like the LEGO holiday sets? Do you like to use them as gifts or as decorations for Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas? Do you buy the ones LEGO provides or do you make your own? Feel free to share your own ideas and creations below! 😉

2015 LEGO Elves – pictures & details!

One of the most interesting new LEGO themes that is coming in 2015 is called LEGO Elves. There has been rumors circulating about them, however most people assumed it was a regular LEGO minifigure line with castle/fantasy type elves that we have seen before in the LEGO Collectible Minifigure series as well as in LEGO Lord of the Rings. However LEGO had something else in mind. 🙂

LEGO Elves

The new elves theme is in fact a girls-oriented theme with the same type of minifigures as in the LEGO Friends line. However I have already heard from many adult LEGO fans (both guys and gals) that they are definitely planning to pick up this series, no matter who is the intended target-audience. Just like LEGO Friends could be considered a sister-theme to LEGO City, LEGO Elves could fit well with LEGO Castle. The characters in the sets more look like pixies or fairies than elves, but I’m not going to argue about such minor technicalities. Also, even if you prefer traditional minifigures, keep in mind that the hairpieces of the mini-dolls fit perfectly on regular LEGO minifigs. And of course all the interesting accessories and sweet colors that we have learned to expect from LEGO Friends are continuing here as well. So let’s take a look at what’s coming…

#41071 LEGO Elves Aira’s Creative Workshop: This is the smallest of the new LEGO Elves sets with 70 pieces, and a very cute mini-doll with light-purple hair and pointy elf ears. And look at all those unique accessories: scissors, carrot tops in brown (which previously only appeared in one set in this color), a cute bird in a new color, gold wings (this is a new color), and several printed pieces (ruler, map, and maybe even the other ones). Also, if you take a closer look, it appears that those drawers actually open. My guess is that this set will be $10 or less.

#41072 LEGO Elves Naida’s Spa Secret: This is a larger set with another cute mini-doll with a different elvish hair-piece, and a purple dolphin! And look at those lavender and purple leaves! I know customizers are going to gobble those up for creating enchanted forests! I would like to add that as far as the story, it is not yet known who these elves are and what they are up to, but it is curious to see a spa in the forest with hot and cold faucet-controls… and a dolphin. No piece-count or price is available for this set at this point.

#41072 LEGO Elves

#41073 LEGO Elves Naida’s Epic Adventure Ship: Here we see the previous two elves with a lovely small ship. Note the new, larger shell pieces in both gold and white. This set is 220 pieces, so I assume the price is going to be in the $20-$25 range.

#41073 LEGO Elves

#41074 LEGO Elves Azari and the Magical Bakery: I do have a picture of this set, but unfortunately I can’t share it as it has the confidentiality stamp. But I will describe it for you. It also has 220 pieces, like the previous set, so it is about the same size and should be the same price-range as well. It includes two mini-dolls (a boy elf and a girl elf). There is also a small animal that looks like a fox. The bakery includes an oven and the main building has several of those new pointy arches and a really nice new filigree 2×4 fence piece in gold. And of course there are tons of interesting accessories.

#41075 LEGO Elves The Elves’ Treetop Hideaway: There is also no image of this set that I can share with you, but I can tell you it looks super sweet! It includes three mini-dolls (Farran, who is a boy elf, and two girls; Emily and Azari). The set includes two trees interconnected with a bridge, a lot more lavender and purple leaves, more of the new filigree pieces, but this time in sand-green (I can count at least three – castle/fantasy builders will love these!), and lots of unique accessories. There is also some kind of a magic-portal looking thingy, but it is hard to make it out.

#41076 LEGO Elves Fairan and the Crystal Hollow: This is the last of the Elves sets, and includes Fairan, a squirrel, and a tree with some crystals at the base. The whole thing almost looks like a kaleidoscope. And the squirrel seems to be operating a small catapult. How sweet… I always knew never to trust those little devils. No piece-count or price is available yet.

#41076 LEGO Elves

And that wraps up the new LEGO Elves sets scheduled for release in January 2015. There are now three products lines for girls: LEGO Friends, LEGO Disney Princess, and LEGO Elves. Between these three, girls can play out pretty much any scenario they want to, while adults look on with envy and wish they could be kids today. Of course we can still buy the sets, but still, it must be magical to get introduced to LEGO through these sets as a child! They are just wonderful and capture many of the things I would have wanted to play with as a young LEGO fan. I’m pretty sure LEGO Elves is going to be successful with girls who prefer fantasy stories instead of the more modern setting of LEGO Friends. They are also excellent sets for parts and accessories for older LEGO fans. Visit the Online LEGO Shop for current selection.

So what do you think? How do you like the LEGO Elves theme? Are you planning to get any of the sets when they get released? Which one is your favorite? Or perhaps you are just planning to get them for the unique colors and accessories? Or pass on completely? Feel free to share your thoughts and discuss in the comment section below! 😉
