The LEGO Movie – Benny’s SPACESHIP!

So since I have watched The LEGO Movie I have been in love with the 1980s something space-guy, Benny. Apparently I’m not the only one. I have read on various social networking sites grown men and women admitting that they completely lost it when Benny was finally able to build a spaceship and he kept excitedly repeating; Spaceship! Spaceship! SPACESHIP! 🙂

I can hardly wait until the release of the #70816 The LEGO Movie Benny’s Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP! (yes, that is the official name), and in the meantime I have been looking over images of the upcoming set, as well as pictures of the old LEGO Classic Space sets Benny’s ship is based on.

To be very honest with you I don’t think Benny’s Spaceship is the best LEGO ship ever, or that it even lives up to the legacy of the LEGO Classic Space sets (besides the color scheme). Yes, I will get it as soon as it gets released, but I’m already planning on how to modify it – which is of course totally in line with the spirit of The LEGO Movie, and I also know little Benny is going to help me out. 🙄

The LEGO Movie Benny's Spaceship Details

The most iconic LEGO Classic Space set is the #928 LEGO Galaxy Explorer released in 1979. There were also a couple of smaller ships designed in the same style and released the same year; the #918 LEGO Space Transport, and the #924 LEGO Space Cruiser. Many other sets came out of the LEGO Classic Space line all the way to 1986, when although the same logo remained, the color-scheme changed from gray & blue to white & blue. I don’t so much like the later sets, but the earlier ones are some of the best LEGO sets ever designed.

LEGO Classic Space is still a favorite of many LEGO fans both young and old, and is very much alive. Including Benny in The LEGO Movie is a touching commemoration of the original LEGO Space theme, and releasing an updated spaceship is making LEGO Classic Space fans dreams come true! I’m positive that Benny’s Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP! is going to be gobbled up as soon as it gets released. 😀

As I have mentioned though, I’m not particularly pleased with the design of Benny’s Spaceship. I don’t really like the elongated nose section and I find the details kind of messy at different sections. The LEGO Classic Space sets had that really pleasing delta shape and the lines were so much cleaner. I will see what I can do to bring that back once I get the set. Another thing to note is that LEGO Classic Space was strictly exploration based. There were no guns, only research instruments. On the other hand Benny’s Spaceship is fully armed with flick-fire missiles, the new spring-loaded missiles and giant cannons. How times have changed…

LEGO Book Review - LEGO Space Building the Future

If you are interested in LEGO Classic Space designs, I highly recommend the book LEGO Space: Building the Future by Peter Reid and Tim Goddard. It is full of amazing LEGO Space creations in the spirit of LEGO Classic Space, and even includes instructions for some of the models. LEGO Classic Space Galaxy Explored by Peter Reid

I’m not the only LEGO Classic Space fan who is just trying to keep busy doing something while waiting for Benny’s Spaceship to get released (come to think of it; it kind of makes us feel like Benny in the movie). For example several LEGO fans have tried to recreate the small ship that is visible in the background of The LEGO Movie poster with Benny (featured at the beginning of this post). Below is one that got it very close to the original by Peter Morris. The pilot has his helmet on backwards because he is embarrassed that his windshield is not the right color. 😕

Anyhow, I babbled on about my excitement for Benny’s Spaceship long enough, now it’s your turn; what do you think? Is this a set you are looking forward to? How do you like the design? LEGO Mixels available now!

The first wave of the LEGO Mixels characters are now available at the Online LEGO Shop, and should also be available at official LEGO stores and LEGO retailers. Also the LEGO Mixels website is now fully functional, so you can get further info on these wacky characters. 🙂

LEGO Mixels is tied in with a TV show on Cartoon Network. From what I have seen so far they are aimed at very young kids, for everyone else it seems like watching the show is a good way to seriously damage some brain-cells. Which is surprising as the sets are made up of very small parts that are normally not recommended for young children, so I’m not sure who the target audience is for the TV show. 😕

Fortunately the LEGO Mixels sets themselves are very fun. They are made up of lots of very useful small parts in interesting colors. The characters are also highly collectable with pocket-money. Also, they are great little sets to keep on your desk and doodle with when you have a few minutes – a great way to improve your building skills! LEGO Mixels includes a good number of the new small ball-joints that LEGO fans area already very excited about.

LEGO Mixels are funny, creative creatures made up of the basic building blocks of LEGO matter: Fire, Rock, Electricity and more. The Mixels live in tribes spread across a vast world and love to mix and combine. By using the special cubits they will be able to mix into new characters with hilarious and surprising results. Nixels are swarming, colorless creatures of deconstruction. Nixels tear apart everything in their path – including the mixed up Mixels. In the first wave of LEGO Mixels we get three tribes, and we will get more later in the year. Below is a bit more info about them, and you can read more at the LEGO Mixels website.

➡ LEGO MIXELS – INFERNITES: The Infernites have their home in the magma wastelands near the center of the earth, a place full of molten lava, rivers of fire, and lots of lovely smoke. So far, nobody else has dared to travel into this molten homeland. In fact, just thinking about it might cause third degree burns! Characters are: FLAIN, VULK and ZORCH.

➡ LEGO MIXELS – CRAGSTERS: The industrious Cragsters are a tribe of miners who live in the many tunnels and caverns they have dug under the surface of the world. They smash, they dig, they are great to have around. Unless, of course, you have lots of fine china! Characters are: CRADER, SEISMO and SHUFF.

➡ LEGO MIXELS – ELECTROIDS: The Electroids live in towers high up in the mountains to stay as close as possible to the lightning storms that energize them (and make them kind of crazy at the same time). Characters are: TESLO, ZAPTOR and VOLECTRO.

➡ LEGO MIXELS – NIXELS: Nixels are annoying and destructive little creatures who are spread all over the land of the Mixels. They live to tear down and break apart the world around them, including any cool combinations that the Mixels create. In fact, there is nothing the Nixels hate more than when two or three Mixels combine together and get super powers. So the Nixels have made it their mission in life to put and end to such crazy creativity all together. And the only way to do this is to hide and destroy the cubits which enable the Mixels to combine in the first place. One Nixel can do little harm. But when they swarm together they can break apart a Mixel in seconds. So now you’re warned! My understanding is that a Nixel is included in every Mixels set. Maybe someone who has them already can confirm this?
