Custom vs. LEGO Gingerbread Man comparison

One of the most fun minifigures in LEGO Collectible Minifigs Series 11 is the Gingerbread Man. Interestingly, shortly before the official LEGO Gingerbread Man was released, two LEGO customizers collaborated and worked on their own version; CrazyBricks who designed the head, and BrickArms who took care of the printing. And not just any printing, but using puffy ink, to really make the details look like icing. Yum! BrickArms also made special pink guns with sprinkles for the little guy! More yum! 🙂

So let’s see how the two gingerbread man versions look next to each other! Flickr member enigmabadger took some helpful side-by-side pictures of the gingerbread man made by LEGO and the CrazyBricks/BrickArms gingerbread man that were both released around the same time. (I guess a gingerbread man was definitely meant to happen!)

LEGO Gingerbread Man Comparison

The two gingerbread man concepts are actually quite similar, and both are excellent takes on what a minifig gingerbread man should look like. Although the puffy printing by BrickArms really makes the custom gingerbread man look extra tasty! 😀

LEGO Gingerbread Man Details

Both of the gingerbread man minifigs come with fun accessories. The LEGO version with a cup that says “Dunk Me!” and the custom version with two pink BrickArms guns with raised and multi-colored sprinkles printing. 🙄

LEGO Gingerbread Man Side-by-Side

From the side-view you can see that the two gingerbread man heads are similar in size, but are also somewhat different. The LEGO version has some brown “frosting” sandwiched between the two halves, making it look like a cookie. Kind of strange, as I don’t recall real gingerbread men having a cookie head, but the feature actually makes this new LEGO piece quite useful for other purposes; like as a giant cookie, sandwich or burger.

LEGO CUUSOO Exo Suit coming in 2014!

Very exciting news from LEGO CUUSOO; the results of the latest review period are in! As you probably know, LEGO CUUSOO is a platform where LEGO fans can submit their ideas for future LEGO products. If the submitted idea receives 10,000 public votes, it will be reviewed by LEGO based on their criteria and may be chosen for production. So let’s see the results of the latest review! 🙂

LEGO CUUSOO Logo

First of all, an interesting aspect of this review is that this time the CUUSOO team combined projects from three previous review periods; Winter 2012, Spring 2013, and Summer 2013. I believe this is the result of more and more projects making it to 10,000 votes as both LEGO fans and the public in general become aware of LEGO CUUSOO. This allows LEGO to have more models to evaluate and choose from, however it also means a lot stiffer competition between projects. In this review period the CUUSOO team looked at ten projects from the above mentioned review periods.

LEGO CUUSOO Potential Sets in Review

From the ten projects the CUUSOO team have chosen Peter Reid’s original LEGO Exo Suit concept. This is particularly noteworthy because this is the first LEGO CUUSOO model that is not based on a license (like the #21103 LEGO DeLorean) or on a real-world model (like the #21101 LEGO Hayabusa). The Exo Suit set is now in development, which means professional LEGO designers are creating the final version that will become the next LEGO CUUSOO set. Final design, pricing, and availability are still being determined, but will be revealed leading up to the set release in 2014.

LEGO CUUSOO Exo Suit

This is of course great news, as the LEGO Exo Suit is one awesome model. Congratulations to Peter for his achievement! I do believe this is going to be an excellent set, as LEGO is particularly good at designing robots and mechs. I can’t wait to see the final version!

All other LEGO CUUSOO projects in the Winter 2012, Spring 2013, and Summer 2013 periods (plus the Thinking with Portals! project from the Fall 2012 period) will unfortunately not be produced as LEGO sets. However there is still hope for the Land-Rover Defender 110 by Sheepo. The LEGO CUUSOO team is still considering it and haven’t yet made a decision. Perhaps it will be the next LEGO Creator exclusive? Also, as a reminder here are the projects that are pending for the next review period:

LEGO CUUSOO Next Review Projects

Just a bit of review on how LEGO projects are chosen (and in case you are interested to submit one): Once a project is submitted on LEGO CUUSOO, the first step is to gain 10,000 supporters who will vote for the project. Once achieved, a fan-submitted project moves from the Idea Stage to the Review Stage, where it earns the opportunity to be considered as a future LEGO set in a quarterly process called the “LEGO Review”. The “LEGO Review Board” composed of LEGO set designers, marketing and business representatives, and other relevant team members across the LEGO Group examines each qualified project. They evaluate concept models and determine if the concept meets LEGO’s high standards for what it takes to be a LEGO product; including factors such as playability, safety, and fit with the LEGO brand. Every potential LEGO product, including those developed internally, goes through a process like this and must meet the same standards. All submitted and qualified projects get fully evaluated before LEGO makes a decision about their viability as a set.

So, although it is sad that so many LEGO projects got rejected this time, we can be sure that LEGO is doing everything possible to choose a project that they believe would have the best potential on the market. If you would like to check out current project on LEGO CUUSOO and vote for your favorites, visit the LEGO CUUSOO website. And to see currently available sets that originated in LEGO CUUSOO visit the Online LEGO Shop.
