2014 LEGO The Hobbit sets pictures!

(Written by Meneldur)

At last we can finally take a look at the new LEGO The Hobbit sets based on the second film, The Desolation of Smaug, that will be released this December. The LEGO Hobbit sets will be released around the same time. (All images are from TheOneRing.net.) So let’s see what we got! 🙂

#79013 LEGO THE HOBBIT LAKE TOWN CHASE: we have talked about this set before as it was first displayed at the San Diego Comic-Con this summer (see: LEGO The Hobbit Lake Town Chase Coming!). Included in this set are the exclusive Bard, Lake Town Master, and Lake Town guard minifigs. Also contained in this set are Bilbo Baggins and Thorin Oakenshield. Thorin comes with a new printed torso in this set. The buildings are comparatively small to other structures released in the LEGO Lord of the Rings and LEGO The Hobbit lines (such as the #79003 Bag End, the #9474 Helm’s Deep, and the #10237 Tower of Orthanc) yet they are nicely detailed with a jail-cell, slanted roofs, and a weapons-rack. Furthermore, there are several dark-brown and dark-green elements that are always a useful additions to a LEGO collection. A small Lake Town boat is included as well.

#79011 LEGO THE HOBBIT DOL GULDUR AMBUSH: This set includes an exclusive Beorn minifigure and two awesome Gundabad Orcs. I find the new Orcs a great addition to the previously released versions, and Beorn is very interesting looking. Also included is a gateway (perhaps the gate to Dol Guldur?), complete with spinning axes, a swinging hammer, a deadly Orc catapult, and of course flick-fire missiles. This set can be combined with the bigger #79014 LEGO The Hobbit Dol Guldur Battle.

#79012 LEGO THE HOBBIT MIRKWOOD ELF ARMY: This set comes with an exclusive and amazing Thranduil minifigure, two Gundabad Orcs, a Mirkwood Elf archer, and two Elven guards. Also notice the all-new dark-brown Warg! If you already have the #79002 LEGO The Hobbit Attack of the Wargs set, this one is going to be a nice addition to the pack. The more Wargs the better! I will definitely be getting this set; not just for the minifigs and the Warg, but also for the many tan elements.

#79014 LEGO THE HOBBIT DOL GULDUR BATTLE: One notable character included in this set is the exclusive minifig Radagast. Radagast – being a main character in The Hobbit films – is a must-have for collectors. Another important character is the Azog minifigure, that was previously only released at the San Diego Comic-Con in very limited quantities. Also in this set are two Gundabad Orcs, Gandalf the Grey, and the Necromancer (Sauron). It is very interesting that LEGO chose to include the Necromancer in this set. Another interesting feature is a magic ring hidden underneath the statue. This is most likely Thrain’s ring that was taken from him during his torment in the dungeons of the Necromancer. The detailing of the fortress gives it the true feel of Dol Guldur. Like the other sets of the LEGO The Hobbit line, this set comes with many useful colors and elements along with several fun traps and functions.

We have discussed some of the best LEGO Lord of the Rings dioramas in the previous two articles in this series (see links at the end of this post). Although I wasn’t really planning on writing more about the topic, I have recently found some really nice LEGO Lord of the Rings creations while browsing LEGO CUUSOO. These are projects created by LEGO fans and submitted for possible future production by LEGO – if they receive enough votes from the public. So lets check them out! 🙂

LEGO Lord of the Rings Sets

LEGO Lord of the Rings Ambush of the Ithilien Rangers – This first LEGO Lord of the Rings creation was built by Dusty-Bricks and posted on CUUSOO just a month ago. I would love to see this become a real LEGO set! Why? It has an Oliphaunt! And one of the best ones I have seen so far; the size is reasonable for a LEGO set and the details and techniques used are really nice! The scene itself depicts Sam, Frodo and Gollum first encountering an Oliphaunt and also running into Faramir, as described in The Two Towers. There are a proposed eight minifigures in this set: Faramir, a Gondor soldier, Sam, Frodo, Gollum, and three Haradrim. Play-features include a trapdoor in the small hill, and the Oliphaunt with a catapult and posable head and legs. Right now this project only has 100 supporters – a long way from the required 10,000 – so if you like it, please support it. Here is the link to read more about the project, and also a video showing off the different features: Ambush of the Ithilien Rangers on CUUSOO

LEGO Lord of the Rings The Forbidden Pool – This is another nice LEGO Lord of the Rings creation built by LEGO fan Faramir. It is a smaller set, but with very nice features and five minifigures. This project has close to 300 supporters as of this writing. Here is the link to read more about the project and see pictures of the details: The Forbidden Pool on CUUSOO

LEGO Lord of the Rings Nazgul on Fell Beast – This LEGO Lord of the Rings creation was designed by captainsmog. It is a really spectacular set with already over a 1,000 supporters. Captainsmog states: “…Being a big fan of the Lord of the Rings films, I felt the urge to bring a cool Fell Beast to life (with LEGO bricks, of course!) when LEGO brought us the Middle Earth themed sets. I would love that every LOTR fan could have this dreadful monster at home and make sweet dreams, full of Nazgûls…” The set includes the Fell Beast that measures 17.7 inches/45 cm long, with a 19.6 inches/50 cm wingspan. It is fully articulated with many possible poses, and can be perched on top of the included mountain peak/pedestal. Ideally, the set would come with the Witch King with his unique helmet. “Do not come between the Nazgul and his prey!” You can read more about this LEGO project and support it here: Nazgul on Fell Beast on CUUSOO

LEGO Lord of the Rings Minas Tirith – This is a LEGO Lord of the Rings project created by NujuMetru (sounds like a LEGO Bionicle fan) with almost 2,000 supporters. Here is the description: “This is my idea for a new LEGO Lord of the Rings set. The siege of Minas Tirith, as seen in The Return of the King, is an iconic scene from the world of Tolkien that LEGO has not yet covered with their products. I believe this is a critical scene that deserves to be made and – as I think I have showcased above – the set can exist at a manageable size, with plenty of figures and play features, while maintaining its signature appearance. As you can see, a modular design would make Minas Tirith more manageable to build, store, and play with. The different curtains of the city are held in place when assembled by spacer-bricks on the ground. The white city is filled with fun features and detailed interiors. Some rooms include the library, the throne-room, the catacombs, and a kitchen-cellar. Of course, a Mordor Orc Army would make an excellent battle-builder set, something like the Uruk Hai Army from the first wave of LEGO Lord of the Rings sets. The rubber-band powered catapult throws the spheres. The trebuchets on the city walls are also fully functional….” You can see more details on this project here: Minas Tirith on CUUSOO

Awesome, aren’t they? As for the possibility of these LEGO Lord of the Rings projects becoming sets, if they do reach 10,000 supporters it could happen. I do have some doubts about it though, as LEGO is already producing The Lord of the Rings line. They most likely already planned out what will be released in the series – and some may even be similar to the CUUSOO projects featured here. Whatever the future of these projects may be, they are remarkable recreations of scenes from the films transferred to a smaller, more LEGO-set-like form that we can all take inspiration from. And below you can check out the currently available LEGO Lord of the Rings sets listed at the Online LEGO Shop.
