The best Christmas LEGO ornaments!

(Written by Chris of Yoda Archives)

Christmas is in the air and many of us have LEGO on our Christmas wish list or shopping lists.  But how about using LEGO to decorate our trees?  There are a few places you can find LEGO related ornaments and you can also make your own. (See links at the end of this post.)

Here I would like to show you some LEGO Christmas ornaments I found and I really like. Hallmark stores have a couple  of Star Wars themed LEGO Christmas ornaments; a Stormtrooper and Darth Vader. I have them both. You may remember that the Darth Vader LEGO Christmas ornament was also available last year. I asked a sales-associate about this and she said that Darth Vader is indeed the same as last year, but because it was so popular last season they are re-releasing it.

These LEGO Christmas ornaments from Hallmark are really impressive. They are large, solid pieces, and are the quality products you would expect from a joint Hallmark-LEGO-Lucasfilm project.  Both of the characters are attached to a 2×4 brick featuring the LEGO and Star Wars logos, and have a loop on top of their helmets for hanging.

Here is the 2012 LEGO Christmas ornament Stormtrooper next to the 2011 Darth Vader. The bottom of the brick is dated the year each ornament was released. The Stormie stands on a slightly larger brick. The info from Hallmark’s website is as follows: Guard each branch of your most villainous tree. With rifle in hand, this LEGO Stormtrooper Keepsake Ornament is ready for battle. 1.75″ x 3″ x 2″ and Prepare your Christmas craft for the dark side of the holiday with Darth Vader. Deflect enemy ray gun bolts as you duel your way onto the naughty list this Christmas. 2.25″ x 3.25″ x 1.25.

Here’s a scale shot with the LEGO Darth Vader ornament and regular Darth Vader minifig. The ornaments are bigger than regular LEGO minifigs. A collection of these guys would look really cool!

The LEGO Christmas Ornament Stormtrooper and Darth Vader are available now at Hallmark stores or online at Hallmark.com for $14.95 each. You can save if you read certain home magazines. My wife has subscriptions to Good Housekeeping and Ladies Home Journal. Both magazines’ December issue have a Hallmark Gold Crown coupon: Save $5 off a total store purchase of $10 or more.

If you don’t have a Hallmark store near you, there are other places also that carry these LEGO Christmas ornaments. Books a Million, and Kohl’s carry Hallmark ornaments in general. I have seen the LEGO ornaments at Books a Million, but have not been to Kohl’s this season.

The LEGO store has its own LEGO Christmas ornaments. They are clear balls filled LEGO bricks and include a matching ribbon for hanging. Depending on the color the number of brick range between 30-40 per ornament. The red ornament contains red and transparent red bricks, the green ornaments includes green and transparent green bricks, and the gold ornaments contains gold, dark-tan and transparent yellow bricks. These LEGO ornaments are $7.99 each. BUY HERE

You can also make your own LEGO Christmas ornaments. We have featured two LEGO artists’ Christmas ornaments here before. The first one is Chris McVeigh. (See: How to Build Christmas LEGO Ornaments) You can download the instructions and parts list from Chris’ website and either use your current LEGO collection or order the parts from LEGO’s online Pick-A-Brick selection.

Peter Johnston is the other LEGO artist who has a really nice collection of LEGO Christmas ornaments. You can check out his ornaments here: Make Your Own LEGO Christmas Ornaments!

There is also a very inspiring project from the Carlson family in Omaha, Nebraska, who makes and sells LEGO Christmas ornaments every year to raise money for homeless children. You can check out their website here: OrnamentsForCharity.com

As you can see there are plenty of options for decorating your tree with Christmas LEGO ornaments this year. So what do you think? Will you add some LEGO ornaments to your tree? Share below! 😉

More LEGO sets on the retiring soon list!

LEGO recently added a new section to their website with sets retiring soon. We have discussed this new feature before (see: New LEGO Sale Section: Items Retiring Soon) and I also added a link at the right-hand side-bar that will take you directly to the page. I’m not planning to write a post every time LEGO adds a new item, however since this feature is still new and a lot of LEGO fans don’t know about it yet, and because LEGO just added a bunch of sets to the list, I thought to give you an update. 😉

Just to summarize, the LEGO Sets Retiring Soon section lists sets that have been recently retired. Once the current stock is sold, they are gone for good. No more will be produced. You may be able to find them on the secondary market, but expect much higher prices. Interesting to note that the feature was added to LEGO’s website a little over a month ago, and from the original eight sets that were listed, five already sold out and only three are still on the list. 🙁

Newly added sets to the LEGO Sets Retiring Soon section are listed below. The most notable ones are the #10212 LEGO Star Wars Imperial Shuttle and #10217 LEGO Harry Potter Diagon Alley. If you are after either of these sets (both really awesome!) this is your last chance. Also the #10193 LEGO Castle Medieval Market Village is still on the list. If you haven’t done it already, I would get this one right away, as this is one of the best LEGO sets every made! 😛

  • #10212 LEGO Star Wars Imperial Shuttle
  • #10217 LEGO Harry Potter Diagon Alley
  • #2734 LEGO DUPLO Straight Train Rails Pack
  • #3182 LEGO City Airport

  • #3841 LEGO Minutaurus Game
  • #3858 LEGO Heroica Waldurk Forest Game
  • #3937 LEGO Friends Olivia’s Speed Boat
  • #4642 LEGO City Fishing Boat

  • #5549 LEGO Building Fun Brick Box
  • #6228 LEGO Hero Factory Thornraxx
  • #6229 LEGO Hero Factory XT4
  • #7869 LEGO Star Wars Battle for Geonosis

  • #7877 LEGO Star Wars Naboo Starfighter
  • #9092 LEGO Racers Crazy Demon
  • #9483 LEGO Cars Agent Mater’s Escape
  • #9674 LEGO Star Wars Planets Naboo Starfighter & Planet Naboo

These are all the new additions to the LEGO Sets Retiring Soon section. I would suggest you keep up to date with the list on a regular basis so you don’t get caught by surprise by a LEGO set that vanishes from the market. I added a quick link to the right-hand side bar for your convenience.

Anything on the updated LEGO Sets Retiring Soon list that you definitely want to grab before it disappears? Either for yourself or as an investment? Share your thoughts in the comment section below! 🙂
