CUUSOO LEGO project: LEGO Portal sets

(Written by stewbrick901)

Who hasn’t played at least one video-game? And if you are a gamer like me, then you might have heard of the exciting and innovative video-game called Portal. (More about Portal here: Portal Video Game.) How is this connected to LEGO? Read on! 😉

Portal takes place inside of the Aperture Science Computer-Aided Enrichment Center. You have to literally think with portals. If you don’t know what a portal is, basically you can place one portal on a surface, and another one onto another surface, and you are able to travel through one portal, and come out of the other. You do this with your portal-gun, which shoots the portals for you.

But all isn’t well. GLaDOS (Genetic Lifeform and Disc Operating System) is a computer that starts out as a friendly guide through the tests. But then she starts to unveil their dark side. It is really a psychotic, murderous computer who wants to kill you, and at the same time wants to test you. So, at the end, you have to use your portal-skills to destroy it.

Portal, and its sequel, Portal 2 have had universal acclaim from critics everywhere. Now some clever LEGO/Portal lovers want to combine the two icons to make LEGO Portal.

The project is called “Thinking with Portals” on LEGO CUUSOO, and for me, it sound like a match made in heaven! The project recently reached the required 10,000 supporters, and is now in the review phrase! 😀

The LEGO CUUSOO Portal project was put together by four LEGO enthusiasts. The group calls themselves Team Jigsaw and includes Nick (Brickthing), a New Zealander Bionicle enthusiast, currently attending University in pursuit of an engineering degree. John (Fivey),  an East-Coast American and the founder of Team Jigsaw, who stays up until 5 AM when collaborating on mad projects (such as this one). With a ken for organizing and a lust for creative prowess, he orchestrates and participates in many wild LEGO contests. Micah (Kakaru), an avid LEGO-fan, builder, writer, and reporter, he has creative abilities that are sometimes virtually indistinguishable from madness. Evan (Ehl-jay), a denizen of Hawaii, the creator of a wildly popular Portal vignette, and a significant presence in the LEGO Flickr community, he has been MOC-ing for years at a ridiculous pace.

I’m a bit uncertain if LEGO will approve LEGO Portal. Portal and Portal 2 have some ties to Half-Life 2, an M-rated game, with aliens and guns. This may break LEGO’s kid-only/no-violence rule, even though Portal doesn’t have any real violence.

But on the other hand how could LEGO not approve of it? The hit game-series plus LEGO?! It must happen! But what about the developers of the game, Valve? They also have to agree. I don’t think Valve would be against it though, as such a good idea will just further promote the game.

Below I will list some of the proposed sets in the LEGO CUUSOO Portal project. You can read more on the LEGO CUUSOO Portal page.

➡  LEGO CUUSOO Portal – GLaDOS’ Chamber: Chell is trapped in the Aperture Science complex! Lead through test after test by GLaDOS. Chell has finally found the psychotic robot’s lair! Will she succeed in destroying her nemesis? The final battle and the fate of Aperture lies in your hands!

Includes three minifigures; Chell, Wheatley, and the famous Potato. Features battle-platform, portal-gun, and GLaDOS. GLaDOS can swing a full 360 degrees and with a rotating head in all directions. Perform a core transfer with Wheatley and GLaDOS! Battle platform is over 5″ (15cm) long. GLaDOS is over 9″ (22cm) wide, and over 12″ (30cm) high.

LEGO CUUSOO Portal – Modular Testing-Chamber: Make your very own Test-Chamber out of LEGO, in any way that you want! First build the modular frame to the dimensions you choose, and then fill the walls and floor with tiles, platforms, buttons and more! Finally, add accessories such as turrets, cubes, small buttons, signs, cameras, and test subjects!

Includes four minifigures; Chell and 3 Aperture Science Sentry Turrets. Completely modular design allows you to redesign the chamber for different tests. Solve button-puzzles with the Weighted Storage Cube, or dodge the laser sights of an array of turrets! Use the 4 different pattern tiles to create any 2 digit number for the level sign. Discover a hidden Ratman-den behind the testing chamber walls. Standard Testing Chamber arrangement is over 10″ (25cm) long, 5″ (12cm) deep and 6″ (15cm) tall! Combine multiple Modular Testing-Chamber sets and your own module designs for unlimited variations. The possibilities are endless!

LEGO CUUSOO Portal – Puzzle Board-Game: Like the Portal games, this is an enthralling battle of wits! Build baffling chambers using the instructions in the included Puzzle Booklet, and solve them with your Portal Device and innate cunning! If you beat all of the included chamber designs, get a friend to design a new one, or find additional fan made puzzles online. This is an indispensable 3D board game for any Portal fan!

I am definitely excited about LEGO Portal! What are your thoughts? Have you ever heard of, or played the Portal video-game? Do you think that you will learn more about Portal through these sets? Comment below, and feedback is appreciated! Also, I am a KFOL (Kid-Fan-of-LEGO), and this is my second article. You can read my first post here: First Look at LEGO City: Undercover Video-Game. In the Star Wars saga the B-wing Starfighter was one of the largest and most heavily armed starfighters/bombers in the Rebel Alliance’s fleet, personally designed by Admiral Ackbar. The name B-wing came from the craft’s remote similarity in appearance to the lowercase letter “b”, although its sword-like shape in attack-mode has earned it the nickname “blade-wing”, which may be another reason for the “b” prefix. It was the key Rebel craft during the battle of Endor where a fleet of B-wings took down an Imperial Star Destroyer. The B-wing served in other important battles as well. The Empire was trying to capture one of these bad-boys just to steal the design, but they remained unsuccessful in their attempt. 🙄

The #10227 LEGO Star Wars B-wing is not the first time LEGO tackles this interestingly shaped starfighter. In the year 2000 LEGO released the #7180 LEGO Star Wars B-wing at Rebel Control Center which included a B-wing, a rebel command center with B-wing pilot, Rebel mechanic, and R5-D4 minifigures. In 2006 LEGO released the #6208 LEGO Star Wars B-wing Fighter, which included an improved B-wing model, a display stand, and two minifigures: Ten-Numb and a Rebel pilot.

So how do you like the LEGO Star Wars B-wing from the Ultimate Collector Series? Is it on your must-have list? And how do you like the features? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section below! 😉
