May 2022 – New LEGO Sets & Promotions

May is especially exciting for LEGO Star Wars fans because of the Star Wars Day specials and the new LEGO Star Wars Ultimate Collector Series set, and there are also other new LEGO sets to check out. So let’s take a look at what’s new this month.

LEGO STAR WARS PROMOTION #1: Promotions for LEGO Star Wars fans include the #40531 LEGO Star Wars Lars Family Homestead Kitchen, free with LEGO Star Wars purchases of $160 or more. The set comes with 195 pieces and features Beru Lars in the family kitchen. The kitchen itself is nicely detailed with a counter, shelves, and various kitchen accessories. The carton of blue milk is another nice touch. To take advantage of this special, visit the LEGO Star Wars section of the Online LEGO Shop.

LEGO STAR WARS PROMOTION #2: The second freebie is the #5007403 LEGO Star Wars Mandalorian Beskar Keychain available for LEGO VIP members with LEGO Star Wars purchases of $70 or more. This is actually a really impressive piece, made of a substantial and heavy metal to resemble a block of Beskar with the Mandalorian emblem stamped on one side and the LEGO Star Wars logo and LEGO VIP logo stamped on the other side. Beskar is a metal alloy also known as Mandalorian iron or Mandalorian steel and is used to make Mandalorian armor in the Star Wars saga. The keyring and chain are darkened to match the piece, and the whole thing is presented in a nice display box with a foam insert. This is a beautiful collectible, that I think even casual Star Wars fans will appreciate. If you would like to get one, visit the LEGO Star Wars section of the Online LEGO Shop.

LEGO STAR WARS PROMOTION #3: The third freebie for LEGO Star Wars fans is the #30495 LEGO Star Wars AT-ST polybag. It’s available with LEGO Star Wars purchases of $40 or more at official LEGO stores and the Online LEGO Shop.

NEW LEGO STAR WARS UCS SET: The new LEGO Star Ultimate Collector Series set that will be available starting on May 4th, is the #75341 LEGO Star Wars Luke Skywalker’s Landspeeder. We talked about the set already (see: LEGO Star Wars Luke Skywalker Landspeeder Coming!), but to recap, this is a highly detailed version of the iconic vehicle, measuring over 19 in. It is complemented by a plaque showing X-34 Landspeeder technical data, and two LEGO minifigures: Luke Skywalker with a lightsaber and electrobinoculars, and C-3PO with a new-for-May-2022 decoration. The set comes with 1,890 pieces and the price is $199.99. Although the set won’t be available until May the 4th, it is already listed at the LEGO Star Wars section of the Online LEGO Shop.

NEW LEGO BOTANICAL COLLECTION SETS: The beautiful LEGO Botanical collection just got two new additions; the #10309 LEGO Botanical Collection Succulents, and the #10311 LEGO Botanical Collection Orchid. This year, LEGO is celebrating 15 years of LEGO Modular Buildings. The series began with the #101823 LEGO Creator Cafe Corner released back in 2007, gradually followed by other buildings. The series has an enthusiastic following amongst LEGO fans that eagerly discuss, build, arrange, and display their collection. More adventurous builders also design their own Modular Buildings in a similar style, and may even make a little side business selling instructions.

As of this year, there have been 17 sets released in the collection, and discussing possible future sets, and waiting for the latest release has become an annual tradition amongst collectors and LEGO city building enthusiasts.

The first LEGO Modular Buildings were designed by LEGO designer Jamie Berard. Jamie is well known for his skills of using unusual LEGO elements as interesting architectural details, for his attention to color and style, and for charming back-stories.

Speaking of stories, Jamie is also very natural on camera and is a great storyteller. In fact, he was one of the first designers who regularly appeared in LEGO designer videos. Even though Jamie passed the torch to other designers to continue the LEGO Modular Building series as he is now working on other projects at the LEGO Group, he is still the best at sharing the history of this much-loved series.

In a recently released video, Jamie takes us on a 40-minute tour inside the secret LEGO vault hidden beneath the company HQ in Billund, Denmark. He talks about each of the LEGO Modular Buildings, their stories, hidden details, and more. It’s wonderful to watch and listen to a LEGO designer who is so enthusiastic about this series and has so much knowledge to share. I highly recommend watching it, so I enclosed it below.

As an easy reference to the whole series, here is the list of LEGO Modular Buildings released so far. The ones that are still available directly from LEGO are linked to the Online LEGO Shop. Earlier sets can be purchased via secondary marketplaces like BrickLink.com. Keep in mind that the oldest sets are the hardest to find and are the most pricey.

It was encouraging to hear that it appears from the video that LEGO has no intentions to discontinue the series. In fact, they are now even adding similarly sized and detailed sets in other themes for those who would like to expand their LEGO city layout.

What do you think? How do you like the LEGO Modular Building collection? Do you own any of the sets? Are you displaying them as is, or do you add your own modifications, additions, and even custom buildings? Feel free to share and discuss in the comment section below!
