2022 LEGO Chinese New Year Sets Review

Since 2019, LEGO has been releasing some really nice sets related to the Chinese New Year celebrations. Originally, these sets were only available in China, thus the #80101 LEGO Chinese New Year’s Eve Dinner and the #80102 LEGO Chinese New Year Dragon Dance from 2019 are hard to find. However, due to high demand from other regions, the #80103 LEGO Chinese New Year Dragon Boat Race (also from 2019), and sets from subsequent years were released worldwide. In 2020, we got the #80104 LEGO Chinese New Year Lion Dance, and the gorgeous #80105 LEGO Chinese New Year Temple Fair (still my favorite set in the collection).

The #80106 LEGO Chinese New Year Story of Nian, and the #80107 LEGO Chinese New Year Spring Lantern Festival were released earlier this year, and next year we are getting the #80108 LEGO Lunar New Year Traditions, and the #80109 LEGO Lunar New Year Ice Festival. They will be available starting January 10th at the seasonal items section of the Online LEGO Shop.

I know many LEGO fans are excited about these sets because of the large variety of unique elements, tons of printed decorations, exclusive minifigs, and overall nice designs. So to help you decide if you would like to add the 2022 LEGO Chinese New Year sets to your collection, I have included a couple of helpful reviews below.

The #80108 LEGO Luna New Year Traditions set is quite different from the earlier sets. Instead of a full scene, it is a cluster of six small vignettes that can be connected in different ways. The vignettes portray different festive activities, including food shopping, making good-luck decorations, visiting family, and exchanging ‘Hongbao’ red envelopes. There are separate building instructions for each of the detailed scenes so the whole family can build together. Note that while in all the other Chinese Year sets the decorations are printed, in this set, most of the decorations are stickers. The price is $79.99, which is pretty reasonable for a $1,066-piece set with 12 minifigs.

The #80109 LEGO Lunar New Year Ice Festival is more like the previously released LEGO Chinese New Year sets with a whole winter scene, including a frozen lake, equipment rental shop, sweet potato vendor’s cart, photo booth, chun ice sculpture, vending machine, penguin-shaped sled, ski slope, snow-capped tree, and more. The set comes with 1,519 pieces and 13 minifigs for the price of $119.99. All the decorated pieces are printed. It’s a lovely set with so many wonderful details!

What do you think? Are you planning to get either or both of the new LEGO Chinese New Year sets? Do you have any of the previous sets in the collection? Which one is your favorite so far? Feel free to share your thoughts and discuss in the comment section below!

LEGO Ideas Sonic the Hedgehog Set Coming Soon!

Today, the LEGO Group announced the new #21331 LEGO Ideas Sonic the Hedgehog Green Hill Zone set; a detailed LEGO brick representation of one of the most iconic video game levels ever. Conceived by 24-year-old, UK-based LEGO superfan Viv Grannell, through the LEGO Ideas platform, this new analog version of the Green Hill Zone gives fans the chance to build and display a piece of gaming history.

Sonic the Hedgehog blasted onto the screens of gamers worldwide in 1991, racing to grab gold rings as he ran through the first level of the game — the now-iconic Green Hill Zone — a bright-green landscape with a look inspired by the California hills. Sonic has kept up the tradition of featuring the much-loved Green Hill Zone in many new versions of the game over the past 30 years — and now the zone can be tackled in a new way; a “real life” LEGO version, designed to be built by fans, arriving in official LEGO stores and the Online LEGO Shop on New Year’s Day.

Lots of fun details and Easter eggs have been incorporated into a 1,125-piece set including five minifigures – an updated version of Sonic, Crabmeat, Moto Bug, Dr. Eggman. and the Phantom Ruby. The model measures 17cm/7” high, 36cm/14” wide, and 6cm/2.5” deep overall. Also included are 10 boxes of golden-colored Rings and a LEGO Technic lever to spring Sonic and friends into the air. And just like in the game, you can earn a gem reward as you build the set! This fun-filled LEGO build results in a dynamic display set or one that can be played with by any Sonic or LEGO fan for years to come.

LEGO fan Viv Grannell is a passionate Sonic enthusiast and saw an opportunity to create a dedicated LEGO set. They submitted their design to the LEGO Ideas platform, a LEGO initiative that allows fans to create designs that are then voted on by the wider LEGO fan community. The submission reached the required 10,000 votes to be considered by the LEGO team to be made into reality. Taking on the challenge of turning the concept into a LEGO set was LEGO Designer Sam Johnson. Talking about the set, Sam said; “Just about anyone who has enjoyed video games on any level in the last 30 years knows and loves Sonic — and has probably sped through the unforgettable Green Hill Zone with him. We have designed this set to be just as colorful and fun as the in-game version of The Green Hill Zone, then filled it with lots of Easter eggs and even prizes to help fans enjoy some of their most beloved gaming icons in a brand-new way.”

The LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog Green Hill Zone set going to be available from the 1st January via official LEGO stores and the Online LEGO Shop. Prices are as follows: $69.99 / £59.99 / €69.99 / 119.9 AUD / 89.99 CAD. For more information, visit the LEGO Ideas section of the Online LEGO Shop.
