Perhaps you remember that a few years ago, Jason Allemann (JKBrickWorks.com) created a motorized version of the Santa’s sleigh with four brick-built reindeer from the #10245 LEGO Winter Village Santa’s Workshop set (see: Flying LEGO Reindeer & Santa for Christmas). The recently released #40499 LEGO Santa’s Sleigh with four moulded reindeer inspired Jason to try to make this sleigh motorized as well with galloping reindeer pulling Santa’s enormous sleigh.

The recently released #40499 LEGO Santa’s Sleigh with four moulded reindeer inspired Jason to try to make this sleigh motorized as well with galloping reindeer pulling Santa’s enormous sleigh. Jason gave this newer sleigh a modular design, so that it can be configured with the four reindeer that come with the set, or extended to eight, nine, or any other number of reindeer. You can see the sleigh in action with four and nine reindeer in the video below.

The galloping mechanism is the same as in the original model, with the front leg of each reindeer connected to a crank that rotates. The drive system however has been improved, so there is a single, connected driveshaft that runs the length of the base. This ensures the motion remains smooth as the number of reindeer is increased. And just like in the previous version, a mechanism is added so that the sleigh intermittently rocks up and down, giving the impression that it is moving. To raise some of the reindeer above the ground to make it look like they are taking off, you can use transparent bricks under their legs, as you can see in the photo below.

If you would like to build your own motorized sleigh, Jason put together two versions of the instructions, one for the standard set with four reindeer, and one to extend it to nine reindeer, but the design is completely modular, so it can be configured to accommodate any number of reindeer. You can download the instructions at Jason’s website at JKBrickWorks.com. And be sure to read the build notes on the same page for some tips on assembling the final model. Below is the build video showing how the model is assembled.

Notice that the leading reindeer has a red nose! Jason simply used a tiny piece of sticker to achieve this, but you can also use a dab of paint. Also, please note that although Jason is using an older LEGO Power Functions Medium motor, you can also use the newer LEGO Powered UP equivalent. Other motors could be used as well with some minor changes, so you can just work with what you have. Enjoy!

What do you think? Do you have the LEGO Santa’s Sleigh set? Did you change it so it is pulled by more reindeer? And how do you like the motorized version? Are you planning to build it? Feel free to share your thoughts and discuss in the comment section below!

December 2021 – New LEGO Sets & Promotions

The last month of another interesting year is upon us, and Christmas is just a few weeks away! Below we will take a look at what’s new this month, including newly released LEGO sets and new promotions.

FREE LEGO SANTA CLAUS SET: According to the LEGO Store Calendar, the only new promotion this month is a free #30580 LEGO Santa Claus set with purchases of $40 or more. This offer is only valid at official LEGO stores.

LEGO DISNEY ENCANTO SETS NOW AVAILABLE: The three new LEGO Disney Encanto sets we talked about recently (see: LEGO Disney Encanto Sets Coming Soon!) are now available. The #43200 LEGO Disney Encanto Antonio’s Magical Door and the #43201 LEGO Disney Encanto Isabela’s Magical Door are released under the LEGO Disney Storybook Adventures collection with cute micro-figures nd a small scene in a foldable case shaped like a book. The third set is the #43202 LEGO Disney Encanto The Madrigal House, which already attracted a lot of attention due to its unique architecture and lovely color-scheme. You can find all three sets at the LEGO Disney section of the Online LEGO Shop.

NEW LEGO ART PROJECT SET: A really interesting new set is the #21226 LEGO Art Project – Create Together kit. It’s basically a fun social project with a DIY twist. You can gather friends and family take and play together at creating personalized artwork for your wall. The set features a simple, buildable palette to color-match tiles and 9 image options in each of 4 themes: Food, Patterns, Icons and Interests. You can pick images to make, and then put them together to form one art piece that measures about 15.5 in. (40 cm) square. And you can also work together with others to create a large image of the iconic LEGO Classic Space minifigure on a starry background. The set is recommended for ages 7 and up, so pretty much anyone can participate. I expect that this set is going to be highly popular. It is available from December 4th at the LEGO Art section of the Online LEGO Shop.

It’s also worth noting that the Online LEGO Shop started listing some of the new sets coming in January, so you may want to check those out as well to plan ahead for the next year. You can find them at the new items section of the Online LEGO Shop.

If you’re still shopping for Christmas presents, many of the recently released large and most popular sets are already sold out, but you can still find many awesome smaller sets to make a LEGO fan happy. If you need some help selecting gifts, visit the Gift Finder section of the Online LEGO Shop.

What do you think? Were you able to get the LEGO sets you wanted to get before the end of the year? Which new sets are you looking forward to the most? Feel free to share your thoughts and discuss in the comment section below!
