LEGO Cube sandbox game coming to China!

A few days ago, LEGO announced a new sandbox game that was developed specifically for the Chinese market. While we can’t play this game, it is still interesting to see what LEGO is up to in other areas. Below is the trailer, the press-release, and some other info, so we can discuss. 🙂

LEGO Cube, a sandbox game for Chinese players, was unveiled on September 19th, 2018 at the “Imagination Creates the World” event by Tencent Games and the LEGO Group. This is the first mobile game developed under the strategic partnership between the LEGO Group and Tencent to provide fun, creative, and safe digital experiences in China.

LEGO Cube is a sandbox game developed and operated by Tencent Games under the license of the LEGO Group, featuring LEGO bricks, minifigures, and other iconic LEGO properties. It is expected that the game will be publicly available at the end of 2018.

In sandbox games, players are not bound by the rules of traditional games. Rather than follow a linear story or structure, players are encouraged and empowered to explore the game-world as they want. Creativity is at the very core of the game, where a players’ imagination is their only limit.

LEGO Cube provides an imaginative, creative, and safe digital gaming experience and encourages players to explore, create, and learn in safe open-ended play, leading to endless possibilities. It also offers players opportunities to develop skills, including 3D design, construction and building, and coding.

Sean McEvoy, Vice President of LEGO Games at the LEGO Group, said “The LEGO Group has more than 20 years of experience in creating fun and creative games that extend and amplify LEGO play. We are excited to preview our first branded mobile game with Tencent Games in China. LEGO Cube is a platform that will enable more children and adults to engage with the LEGO brand in China, empowering them to explore their imagination and creativity in a digital world.”

The LEGO Group sees digital media, such as games, apps, and movies, as an exciting opportunity to add new, exciting layers and dimensions to the LEGO experience and make it relevant to even more children.

LEGO Cube is the latest offering under the strategic partnership between the LEGO Group and Tencent, which was announced in January 2018. Based on a mutual understanding of digital child safety, the two companies are working together to re-imagine the digital future of Chinese children. The LEGO Video Zone was launched on Tencent Video in May 2018 to provide a fun, inspiring, and safe digital entertainment experience for Chinese children.

Paul Huang, Senior Vice President of the LEGO Group and General Manager of LEGO China, said “As a company with 86 years of history, the LEGO Group has always made safety its top priority, be that for our physical products or our digital experiences. Children are our role models and our most important purpose is to inspire them and help them develop through play. This means taking our responsibility as a company very seriously since children’s safety is and always will be our most important concern.”

LEGO Cube will safeguard players of all ages with protection features on product and content design, user registration, parental controls, and player-to-player interaction. The game will also require identity and age verification. This will empower children to play LEGO Cube, but on a dedicated server, featuring additional child safety measures. LEGO Cube will also feature an anti-addiction system to ensure a safe and healthy play experience.

Based on the trailer and preliminary info, it seems that LEGO Cube is similar to LEGO Worlds, and looks pretty cool. LEGO Cube is going to be limited to mainland China only, and there are no plans at this point to make it available in any other regions. However, nothing is set is stone yet, so if the game is successful, it might be introduced to other regions. We will know more about this once the game gets released. In China, players will be able to use the game on Android and IOS devices, as well as on Windows PC. This is the game’s official website if you want to keep an eye on updates (it’s in Chinese though): lgwx.qq.com

What do you think? How do you like the idea of the LEGO Cube game? Did you notice anything interesting from the trailer? Would you like to see the game introduced in your area? Feel free to share and discuss in the comment section below! 😉

Three new LEGO sets were released for Minecraft fans that we haven’t talked about yet, and there is also a LEGO Minecraft BrickFanz pack with a very cute Steve and even cuter Creeper. LEGO Minecraft is a very popular theme both with Minecraft fans and those who are looking for basic building bricks in nice earth-toned colors. So, let’s take a closer look at the latest new sets. 🙂

#21145 LEGO MINECRAFT THE SKULL ARENA: This is the smallest of the new sets, that mostly works well as an add-on to some of the other LEGO Minecraft sets. It features a large skull-shaped structure as the main attraction in the middle of a lava arena, with a green and blue player podium at the sides. Players suppose to dodge the slime shooter and defeat their opponent to claim the golden apple, and battle the killer bunny to get the healing potions and a chest containing a shield and bow. The three characters included are two minifigs with unique Minecraft skins, and a brick-built killer bunny. Measures over 4” (11cm) high, 9” (24cm) wide and 6” (16cm) deep. 198 pieces. Price: $19.99 – BUY HERE

#21146 LEGO MINECRAFT THE SKELETON ATTACK: This set works much better as a stand-alone than the previous one, and of course, if can also be added to other LEGO Minecraft sets. It features a buildable 3-level shelter with a crafting table, bed, furnace, chest, flames, fence, crops, 2 ladders and an opening trapdoor. You can shear the red sheep to yield a red wool block, craft a stone sword and prepare for battle, look out for the skeleton horseman, and activate the trapdoor function to sink the skeleton invaders. And, like with most of the LEGO Minecraft sets, you can easily swap building sections to redesign the layout. As far as characters, you get Steve, a skeleton horseman, two additional skeletons, and a red sheep. Measures over 6” (16cm) high, 10” (26cm) wide and 7” (19cm) deep. 457 pieces. Price: $39.99 – BUY HERE

#21147 LEGO MINECRAFT THE BEDROCK ADVENTURES: This is the largest of the new LEGO Minecraft sets, featuring the depths of the Minecraft Overworld. The different mine and bedrock levels are connected by a series of ladders, and there are also water and lavafalls. Here also, you can easily swap the modular sections to redesign the layout in a number of configurations. Your character can activate the TNT function to mine obsidian and 7 types of ore, and venture through caves while trying to avoid an array of hostile mobs, including a cave spider, zombie, Creeper and silverfish that spawn when you mine the rock face. Check out the video-review below by JANGBRiCKS to see all the play-features in action. It’s also worth noting that the silverfish is a very interesting new design and is unique to this set. Included characters are Alex and Steve, plus a Creeper, cave spider, zombie, bat and two silverfish. The Bedrock Adventures set measures over 7” (20cm) high, 13” (35cm) wide and 5” (14cm) deep. 644 pieces. Price: $89.99 – BUY HERE

#41612 LEGO BRICKHEADZ MINECRAFT STEVE & CREEPER: From all the new BrickHeadz characters these little guys are some of my favorites. The BrickHeadz style matches the Minecraft style really well, ending up with two adorable characters. All the decorations are printed, and Steve comes with a standard LEGO Minecraft diamond sword. There is not much playability with BrickHeadz characters, but they are fun to build and look great on display. LEGO also suggests to “mash up your LEGO BrickHeadz construction characters to create supercool hybrids or your own amazing characters”. I haven’t seen anyone do this yet, but I suppose it could be fun. 160 pieces. Price: $19.99 – BUY HERE

If you are a LEGO Minecraft fan, just get the set(s) that matches your layout the best. If you are new to LEGO Minecraft, my suggestion would be #21146 Lego Minecraft The Skeleton Attack. It has a varied enough layout and enough play-features to give you a taste of what LEGO Minecraft is about. Interestingly, while the two smaller sets (and LEGO Minecraft sets in general) have a very reasonable price, the #21147 Lego Minecraft The Bedrock Adventures is way overpriced for some reason. With 644 standard pieces, it shouldn’t be more than $60-$65 the most. If you are interested in this set, my suggestion would be to wait until it goes on sale, or until you can take advantage of special promotions like Double VIP Points. The other sets are fairly priced and would be a good buy even without any promotions. They are available (along with previous LEGO Minecraft sets) at the LEGO Minecraft section of the Online LEGO Shop.

What do you think? How do you like the LEGO Minecraft collection? Do you have any of the sets already? How do you like them? And are you planning to get any of the newest sets? Feel free to share your thoughts and own reviews in the comment section below! 😉
