LEGO SpaceX Falcon Heavy & Tesla Roadster

The SpaceX Falcon Heavy, carrying Elon Musk’s Tesla Roadster as a dummy payload, has captured the imagination and excitement of people all over the world. The Falcon Heavy’s maiden launch on February 6th of this year was a truly historic event, and adding Elon’s own personal vehicle only made it more fun and engaging to the general public. Many people were glued to their screens watching the YouTube live feed as the Roadster was drifting into space on its way to reach Mars’ orbit. The launch of the Falcon Heavy was to demonstrate that it can carry payloads (including humans) to the Moon and Mars, and while it may take a bit to make that happen, it is definitely a possibility. 🙂

Sitting in the driver’s seat of the Roadster and wearing SpaceX’s pressure spacesuit is Starman, a full-scale human mannequin named after the David Bowie song. He is casually resting his left elbow on the open windowsill, while his right hand is on the steering wheel. The car’s sound system was looping the Bowie songs “Space Oddity” and “Life on Mars?” until the car’s battery ran out. There is also a copy of the Douglas Adams novel “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” in the glovebox, along with a towel and a sign on the dashboard that reads “Don’t Panic!” – both references to the book (read more on Wikipedia here and here).

Shortly after the launch, the twitter account of the LEGO Worlds sandbox game tweeted the below image, with a virtual LEGO version of Starman in the driving seat of the Tesla Roadster, looking back at our beautiful blue planet. Since then, a number of LEGO fans recreated scenes from the launch. The first picture above with a brick-built Roadster and minifig Starman is by LEGO fan LuisPG, and is posted on LEGO Ideas as a project you can vote on for the potential to become an official LEGO set.

There are a number of other LEGO Ideas projects that feature the SpaceX Falcon Heavy and Tesla Roadster. Some of my favorites are the large SpaceX Falcon Heavy with a mini Roadster by newman (first picture below), the SpaceX Falcon Heavy by khehmeyer with separating stages (second picture below), a smaller SpaceX Falcon Heavy by SpaceRage that also includes the launch tower and launchpad (third picture below), and Tesla in Space by Rolling-bricks with a minifig-scale Roadster and small planet on a display-stand (fourth picture below). You can vote for any or all of these projects by following the links. I hope at least one of them will make it into an official LEGO set!

LEGO always had a great interest in space travel, as exemplified by their friendly relationship with NASA, and all the space travel inspired LEGO sets of the past and present. Currently, the #21309 LEGO Ideas NASA Apollo Saturn V, and the #21312 LEGO Ideas Women of NASA are two wonderful sets to celebrate space exploration, and I hope there will be many more in the future. Space travel and LEGO just fit together so well!

What do you think? Did you watch the launch of the SpaceX Falcon Heavy? And would you like to have a LEGO set to commemorate the event? Which one of the currently listed LEGO Ideas projects related to the launch do you like the most? Feel free to share your thought and discuss in the comment section below! 😉

LEGO at the New York Toy Fair summary

As we discussed last week, the New York Toy Fair took place this past weekend, and while LEGO showcased mostly sets that are already available, they also revealed some new sets that will be released later this year. We previously talked about the upcoming #75954 LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts Great Hall, the #75212 LEGO Star Wars Kessel Run Millennium Falcon, the LEGO Jurassic World; Fallen Kingdom sets, the LEGO PowerPuff Girls line, and the 2018 LEGO Speed Champions, so I won’t repeat that information here (see: 2018 LEGO Sets & Themes Announced!). Instead, today we will take a look at the other new sets and themes we haven’t talked about yet that were revealed at the New York Toy Fair. 🙂

LEGO MINIFIGURES SERIES 18: Series 18 of the LEGO Collectible Minifigures is focused on costumed minifigures and birthday parties. The characters are as follows: Birthday Cake Guy, Firework Guy, Cowboy Costume Guy, Spider Suit Boy, LEGO Brick Suit Guy, LEGO Brick Suit Girl, Race Car Guy, Birthday Party Boy, Cactus Girl, Flowerpot Girl, Cat Costume Girl, Birthday Party Girl, Classic Policeman, Elephant Girl, Dragon Suit Guy, Unicorn Guy, and Party Clown. The series will be available in April under the LEGO Minifigures section of the Online LEGO Shop.

LEGO HULKBUSTER ULTRON EDITION: One of the highlights of the New York Toy Fair was the reveal of the #76105 LEGO Marvel Super Heroes Ultron Edition Hulkbuster. This massive mech features a rotating torso, posable fingers, arms, legs and feet, and glow-in-the-dark elements. The mech comes with two interchangeable left arms, including a regular arm and a jackhammer arm with punching function. And there is a light-brick in the chest. The set includes a display platform as well, with alternate attachment points for posable robotic construction arms, and a desk. And it also includes a new Iron Man Mark 43 exclusive minifigure. The Hulkbuster measures over 9” (25cm) high, 3” (10cm) long and 8” (22cm) wide. The platform (without attachable arms/desk) measures over 7” (19cm) wide, 8” (21cm) deep and under 1” (2cm) high. 1,363 pieces. Price: US $119.99 – CA $149.99 – DE 129.99€ – UK £119.99 – DK 1199DKK (Euro pricing varies by country). Available for sale directly through LEGO beginning Saturday 3rd March, at official LEGO stores and the LEGO Marvel Super Heroes section of the Online LEGO Shop.

LEGO BRICKHEADZ GO BRICK ME: An interesting set that was revealed at the New York Toy Fair was the #41597 LEGO BrickHeadz Go Brick Me customization kit. The set includes 708 pieces that allow you to build a BrickHeadz of yourself, your friends, or anyone else you might like. While up to this point the LEGO BrickHeadz line mostly gave us blocky versions of various licensed characters, with the BrickHeadz Go Brick Me kit you can play more freely with the building techniques to come up with your own characters. I very much like this concept and am really looking forward to this set! It will be available for $29.99 under the LEGO BrickHeadz section of the Online LEGO Shop.

LEGO BOOST NINJAGO DRAGON: Another interesting set that was on display at the New York Toy Fair was the #70652 LEGO Ninjago Stormbringer. It is the first set that is powered by the LEGO BOOST robotics system outside of the #17101 LEGO BOOST Creative Toolbox. The dragon looks kind of messy (see video below), but hopefully, it will make up for its looks by fun robotics functions. It should be available in the fall and listed under the LEGO BOOST section of the Online LEGO Shop.

OTHER 2018 LEGO STAR WARS SETS: Besides the #75212 LEGO Star Wars Kessel Run Millennium Falcon, there were a couple of other 2018 LEGO Star Wars sets displayed as well. The #75208 LEGO Star Wars Yoda’s Hut includes Yoda, Luke and R2-D2, and the #75537 LEGO Star Wars Darth Maul Buildable Figure features the dreaded Sith Lord (see video below). It is also worth noting that it was revealed that the front section of the #75212 LEGO Star Wars Kessel Run Millennium Falcon serves as a removable escape pod. I’m sure this will play a major part in the upcoming film. They will all be available shortly under the LEGO Star Wars section of the Online LEGO Shop.

LEGO THE INCREDIBLES 2 SETS: While images were not allowed, at least we now have the names of The Incredibles 2 sets; #10759 LEGO Incredibles 2 Elistigirl’s Rooftop Pursuit for $19.99, #10760 LEGO Incredibles 2 Underminer’s Bank Heist for $24.99, and #10761 LEGO Incredibles 2 The Great Home Escape for $29.99.

2018 LEGO UNIKITTY SETS: Unikitty already got her own animated show on Cartoon Network, and we will be getting a series of collectible Unikitty figures in blind bags in August of this year. In addition, there are also going to be five regular sets numbered #41451-#41455.

And that’s pretty much it as far as LEGO’s presence at the New York Toy Fair. In the videos below, the Brothers Brick will show you around the LEGO booth, so you can see what it looked like, as well as show you some of the sets in more detail. It is interesting to note that my other favorite brand, Mega Construx, also had a subdued participation this year, which was particularly strange, as last year they had a huge custom display of a futuristic world that greatly excited fans.

What do you think? Which upcoming 2018 LEGO sets and themes are you looking forward to the most? Feel free to share your thoughts and discuss in the comment section below! 😉
