Off-Season Storage for LEGO Winter Village Sets

Now that Christmas is over, many LEGO fans are ready to pack away their LEGO Winter Village displays until next year. Some LEGO fans completely take apart the sets and rebuild them each year, while others pack away the buildings and only take apart the layouts. With now so many sets in the collection, this might be a more practical way to handle the LEGO Winter Village collection.

If you do decide to pack away the LEGO Winter Village sets, simple cardboard boxes or plastic tubs will suffice. However, if you want to still be able to see the sets, or even display them all year long while protecting them from dust, another solution is clear display boxes.

There are also companies offering custom-made storage solutions for LEGO sets, but their products tend to be expensive. Instead, you could get generic storage boxers that work with LEGO sets just as well.

One of the most practical ones I have seen is by mDesign, a storage and organization solution company with some really great products to tidy up homes and office spaces. Their clear storage boxes are good quality, stackable, and come with a hinged lid. And most importantly, they come in a myriad of sizes and are fairly inexpensive.

Their 12.75 x 7.25 x 9 inch boxes are perfect for the LEGO Winter Village sets, and you can get a four-pack for $60. That’s $15 per box that will last a long time and will protect and showcase your LEGO Winter Village sets. LEGO Disney Wish Collection Overview

The recently released animated musical fantasy film Wish by Walt Disney Animation Studios was inspired by Disney’s Centennial celebration, and ties together a major theme across most Disney films; wishes coming true. The story focuses on a 17-year-old girl named Asha in the Kingdom of Rosas, who makes a wish to the stars in a moment of need, which leads her to meet a living, magic star fallen from the sky, something that attracts the attention of Rosas’ evil ruler Magnifico who controls the wishes of all the citizens.

LEGO offers three sets related to the film. Although they are primarily designed for children, adult LEGO fans might also find them interesting due to the interesting architecture, unique color-scheme, clever building techniques, and the number of unique printed and recolored elements. The included mini-dolls are also noteworthy because of their intricate and beautiful printed details. But before we look at the sets in more detail, below is the trailer for the film in case you haven’t seen it.

The smallest of the three sets is the #43223 LEGO Disney Wish Asha in the City of Rosas for $19.99. It includes a small marketplace with stairs and a balcony, and introduces the unique color-scheme of all three sets; white, tan, shades of teal, lavender, and yellows. It’s such a pleasing combination! Also, note the printed 1×1 tiles on the arched columns as well as the printed wall element behind them.

The three characters are Asha, her goat Valentino, and the cute little winking Star. Asha’s dress is gorgeously detailed all around. This is actually my favorite of the three sets. Even though it’s small, it has a lovely style that could be used as an inspiration for much larger buildings. So much potential here!

The second set in the collection is #43231 LEGO Disney Wish Asha’s Cottage for $49.99. It features Asha again in the same dress, her mother Sakina, her grandfather Sabino (with a nicely printed lute), and little Star. There is a lot to like in this set; the thatched roof, the timberwork around the windows, the printed window shutters, the fireplace, the well, and the small tree.

The printed book and the printed window on the second floor are nice pieces to have. I would say that for adult LEGO fans this set is a good parts-pack and a good set to build at least once to learn some of the building techniques. Other than that, it’s mostly a kids’ playset with an open back, similar to many LEGO Friends and LEGO Disney sets.

The largest of the three sets is the #43224 LEGO Disney Wish King Magnifico’s Castle for $99.99. The castle measures over 11 in. (28 cm) high, 12 in. (30 cm) wide and 4 in. (11 cm) deep. If you have seen the movie, you will recognize the many references to scenes in the film.

The shiny/mirrored stickers are especially noteworthy, but there are also a couple of really nice printed elements unique to this set; the ornate design above the front gate, and the narrow arched windows printed on the curved walls of the tower. The printed and translucent soft plastic roof piece is also unique.

This set really showcases the architecture and colors of this theme. I think the gate and the structure around it are especially well done and could be used as a template for castles, palaces, temples, and fantasy buildings. I haven’t found anything especially noteworthy on the inside besides maybe the candle holder.

The characters included are Asha (same dress again), her friend Dahlia (I really like this mini-doll!), King Magnifico in an ornate outfit with a matching gloriously shiny cape, and of course Star. In the video below, you can take a closer look at all three sets with LEGO reviewer Ashnflash.

If you have seen and liked the film, I think you will be able to appreciate these sets on a deeper level, but I think even if you haven’t seen it or liked it, these LEGO Wish sets have a lot to offer. I really like the unique printed elements, and I find many of the other parts useful as well. Even the mini-dolls can blend in with other characters.
